Samba Docs
John, you have done a fantastic job with the docs. I download it every few
days. How close is it to release status? (I don't really see any show
stoppers but I haven't looked at everything.) Is it supposed to coincide
with the actual Samba 3.0 release? If so I'll wait to send it up for
printing (as it is HUGE) :)
Great Job.

Setting up 3.0 to authenticate to AD
After reading through the doc for setting up 3.0beta with ADS, I have gotten
it to work along the lines of the the doc said. I can use wbinfo -g or -u
top get the users and groups, I can use the net user or net group command to
do it as well. I can login with the kinit program, perfectly well as well.
Unfortunately, I cannot seem to connect to the linux machine from a Windows
machine. I keep

Using ACLs
I am trying to change some ACLs on some files and directories. I have samba
binaries with acl support compiled in. I am using an XFS filesystem. The
Mandrake kernel supports acls by default.
When I right click on the file in Windows explorer and change the
permissions, I get an access denied error. If I use smbcacls, I get the
following:
[root@luna tmp]# smbcacls //luna/tmp test.txt -U jim -A

Re: Windows 2000 don't fetch user.DOMAIN profile
running echo %userprofile% from a windows command prompt will tell you
exactly where your user profile is located.
running set will give you all your environment settings.

problem logging on to samba domain (pdc) from a win x pworkstation
If I'm not mistaken, the sign or seal hack from samba2.2.3 is broken. Use
the newer hack or manually modify your registry.

Mandrake Binaries
I lost my bookmarks to the samba binaries compiled for Mandrake 9.0.
I'd like to mess around with the 3.0 stuff. I remember there were 2 ftp
sites that stayed pretty current. I'd like to add them to URPMI so I can
update easily.
Thanks

Groups with Samba domain controler or domain member
Does anybody know more about groups? I am considering switching from NT
to Samba domain and have made some test. Unfortunately I need to make
two additional groups, except Domain Admin (one of them is Domain
Users). Is it possible to make that with the stable version of Samba?
And another, but not so important (for now) question. Currently I have a
Samba server, providing files and printers

Samba LDAP user adding
I just installed samba 2.2.7 on Mandrake 9 with OpenLDAP support. I have set
up OpenLDAP and everything is cool. When I try to add a user I get:

FW: Windows machines to samba over internet
That is correct jim. We will setup a vpn, we also know the ports to open
but the real question is if there is any parameter to increase the
timeout period when the windows machines decide that there is no "share"
at the other end.... Since the remote workers connected to the internet
are using slow links, we are having problems with timeouts....
Thanks,

Samba maps any user to nobody -> problem logging on to samba domain (pdc) from a win xp workstation
I did it all again. The samba workstation account smb_cl is all right.
My problem is that after I have joined my samba domain
the domain logon does not work.
At the logon prompt on my Win XP it says
- that no domain controller is available or
- that my machine account was not found.
My log.smbd says at the same time:
[2003/04/11 12:21:59, 0] smbd/password.c:authorise_login(872)

win ME/Samba connection
Ok, believe it or not, I've looked through all 209 pages of the
Samba-HOWTO_Collection.pdf plus used this mail list and other internet
sources, used those recommendations, tried almost every possible
iteration on the samba.conf file, looked at logs until nauseated and
have concluded that there is no way that Windows ME can connect to a
Linux box using Samba. Connecting to the WinME box from

AW: problem logging on to samba domain (pdc) from a win xp workstation
I had assumed that already and did that manually.
Might I have to change further keys on my xp workstation in the control
panel in order to become a domain member of my samba domain?
Why doesn't the workstation find the domain controller = samba pdc at
logon time? Do I have to modify any host file on XP, install a dns
server?
Cheers,
Dominik

Samba Domain Login
Okay,
I'm really starting to run out of ideas here. Any help would really
be handy. I'm looking after a small network, clients are running win2000
SP3 and a Linux Server running samba, doing domain logins. Everything is
working fine apart from two machines (from ten). Probably once a week
one of them will fail to login in after a reboot or log off. If any
user tries to login into the

smb client file list
Hello,
Am new to this list so pardon if this question has been asked before.
I am trying to find a way to access MS "net shares" and be able to execute
"net use" without installing MS. I am looking at a floppy-based linux+samba
solution. Most of the floppy linux contain apps I don't need or are
centered more towards a router. So I now plan to create my own bootable

Roaming Profiles: Advantages and disadvantages?
Hello everyone. I wanted to get some feedback and opinions from people
regarding the use of Roaming profiles.
originally, I was planning on using roaming profiles. However, I am
starting to wonder if this is such a good idea. The reason is that, if I
implement roaming profiles, there is a good chance that there will be
network congestion as well as a lot of stress on the server. (50 users so

Editing the registry on NT clients
Hi all,
I seem to remember that some time ago (after some nasty VBScript virus
or other) that there were postings to the list about how a registry
change could be rolled out to all the client workstations with Samba. Of
course, now I'd like to try it, I can't find the details any more. Can
anyone tell me how its done? I thought there was functionality in
rpcclient, but can't find

DOS Properties Not Networkable?
If I right-click on an executable program (like a DOS batch file) that
resides on a samba share and set properties like "full screen", that
property is remembered on the machine with which I made the change.
However, if I go to another machine and run that file, it uses the default
properties. Doing a right-click from the other machine and viewing the
properties also shows all the
