Build Errors, torture tests 3.0.x/HP-UX 11i
I get the following errors when building the torture suite under HP-UX 11i
with HP AnsiC. They are actually somewhat similar to the errors that I get
trying to build the whole package with gcc:

Building Samba 3.0.5 on HP-UX 11.11
First -- to avoid the common answers to the 'building on HP-UX'
questions that seem to be available on the list and the web:
1) using the depot from the Porting Center won't work, it's well
downrev of 3.0.5 and I need to get the new security fixes (so that the
security team will go back into it's dark dank den and fear not for
the security of our environment)

Authentication Scheme for Samba3.0beta
Hello,
I'm trying to configure authentication for my Samba3.0beta box against
our W2K (mixed-mode), Acitve Directory network.
Is Windbind still the way to go for login authentication in Samba3.0
using my Windows domain account? I want to stay with our Acitve
Directory PDC authenticating me.
Is there a way to get my Kerberos ticket at login for my Samba box?

RSync / Vista / Junction Points issue
I'm running DeltaCopy (essentially a Windows friendly GUI wrapper around
RSync 2.6.6) on Microsoft Vista. I'm trying to make a backup of a user's
profile directory. One big difference between Vista and earlier Windows
versions is that Vista makes extensive use of Junction Points (sort of like
Unix symlinks) for compatibility. For instance, in a profile directory there

Error compiling on HP-UX
Dear all,
I hope this is the right mailing list for my question -- I felt that this was
too technical for R-help.
I am trying to compile R-2.4.0 on a HP-UX system:
./configure
MAKE=gmake --prefix=$HOME --without-x --without-tcltk --disable-R-profiling --without-readline --disable-multibyte
R is now configured for ia64-hp-hpux11.23

Flash problems in newest upgrade?
Hi, I just upgraded to the newest kernel and Flash. Hulu now "grays
out" when I try to go to full screen. I tried uninstalling and
reinstalling the proprietary video drivers (no difference either way),
so I'm guessing it has something to do with either the new Flash or
the new kernel. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
Thanks for any pointers.

Update Issue
I come to you "hat in hand" again. For the first time in a long while
I got a "Update Notification" at the bottom of my screen -- so I
decided to click on it and run the update. Unfortunately I got a
couple dependency errors and am not sure how to solve them. (Not even
sure why I got them.)
They are as follows:
Missing Dependency: libavcodec.so.51 is needed by package

Samba-3.0beta2 PDC with LDAP backend
Just tried with Samba3.0beta2 as PDC with LDAP
backend. Machine still cannot automatically join
domain. Workstation entry added to LDAP via add
machine script but got access denied during the join.
A join immediately following the first join succeeded.
Here is the trace in the smbd log.

libgio?
Hi,
I'm trying to run Celtx (a screenplay formatter) in CentOS 5.3 from

If I run celtx I get

Flash Drive problem?
I've been having an odd problem lately. When I drag files from the
computer to a flash drive, they appear to copy, but when I try to use
the files I find that only the name was copied (file size of 0). When
I copy the same files to the same flash drive, from the terminal,
everything seems to work.
Has anyone else experienced a problem like this? It's starting to get
a little frustrating.

Caught between a Red Hat and a CentOS

Thanks! Desktop update successful
Just used 'yum clean all' and 'yum update.' So far no problems at all.
I had to double check to make sure that I actually updated -- no new
wallpaper or splash screen this time.
Thanks everyone.

Xorg without xorg.conf (a bit OT)
I like to try out other distributions of Linux. Today I took a look at
Mint Linux 8 and Fedora 12. I installed and updated each on a small
partition -- actual physical install, not virtual machines. Both
worked great at 1280x1024 (their defaults) but neither would let me
use 1024x768 resolution. Both came with newer versions of Xorg,
neither of which build an xorg.conf file. Mint gave me three

Wireless Made Easy (for Home Desktops)
For those of you who use a wireless router and may work on one or two
(or even several) machines in your computer room, an AP Client is a
nice solution. When you move to another machine you can just move the
wireless net adapter to the new machine and you're up and running on
the network immediately. I've been using a D-Link G730AP for a while
-- but it's not really made for this --

Went with OpenDNS for now
A few weeks ago I asked about firewalls and family filters. Lanny
Marcus, I believe, suggested OpenDNS. Just wanted to thank him (and
everyone here) for their suggestions. Eventually I would like to learn
about firewalls, but I don't really want to run another machine at
this time. OpenDNS is trivial to set up on the router and looks to be
just about exactly what I wanted.
Thanks. Sorry to

Grub upgrade for CentOS 5.5?
Stupid question (I'm guessing). I'm currently tri-booting (or would
like to be) VectorLinux 6 Deluxe, CentOS 5.5 and an evaluation copy of
Red Hat 6. I'm using CentOS's grub. VectorLinux and CentOS boot fine,
but Red Hat won't load. I think I read somewhere that CentOS's grub is
too old for ext3, 256 (something or others).
So, is it possible to download and install a newer

Full screen Flash in CentOS 5.5 again
I'm happy to report that, as of (at least) the last Flash update, full
screen Flash (on Hulu and Youtube) is again working on my machine. I
know some folks weren't updating Flash because of this so it might be
time to update.

Gnome Notification Applet
I tried out Scientific Linux 6 Live to see (basically) what I can
expect with CentOS 6 and was pleased to find that everything looks
pretty familiar and is easily customizable to make it look and feel
like 5.6 -- except for one thing that I also noticed in Ubuntu's
newest beta (my Dad uses Linux Mint). For whatever reason, Gnome has
decided to put the Volume Control and Network Manager in the
