Guest Account and Browsing
I have just upgraded my Samba server from 2.0.4b to 2.2.2 on a Sun E450
running Solaris 2.6.
When the guest account value is set to nobody the browsing does not work. I
cannot see any thing under
the Network Neighbourhood.
When the guest account is set to root browsing works ok.
Could someone tell me exactly what permissions the guest account needs to
have?
What files does it need access to?

CentOS 4.2beta on Sun Ultra 5 (sparc64)
I just wanted to bring some attention to the experimental build of
CentOS that Pasi put together for sparc64 architecture. I installed it
for the first time last night on a Sun Ultra 5 (333MHz, 256MB RAM,
upgraded to 40GB hard disk).
I installed it over a serial console as this is a headless system.
Install went flawlessly. After the install was done and it booted up, I
ssh'd in as root,

strange nmbd problems
Hello,
We have three Samba servers running at our site. They are
1) Solaris 2.6 & Samba 2.0.4b
2) Solaris 7 & Samba 2.0.4n
and
3) Mandrake linux 6.2 & Samba 2.0.3
We have experienced this problem on all of the above servers. After a period
of time (just over a month in the case of the linux box) the servers are no
longer registered with the WINS server. We have to restart nmbd to

File locking in a cluster
Hi,
I have 2 Sun T1000's running Solaris 10 and Sun Cluster 3.2.
They are each connected to a fibre attached SATA RAID array which they
use as data storage area for PC clients.
Both servers are running Samba 3.0.25c.
The problem I have is that when a PC client access a file via Samba
running on server-a and another client accesses the same file via Samba
on server-b no locking is happening.

SAMBA, NIS and NFS
Hi All
Some background first
I have been asked to set up an environment involving three machines
1. A windows 2000 client
2. A Solaris 8 E450 / NIS client
3. An SGI IRIX fileserver/ NIS server holding user home directories
The E450 NFS mounts the SGI and users have their home directories on
the SGI. When users want to test their application software they ssh
from their windows client into

Problem with Samba on Solaris 2.6
Hi All
I downloaded the binary package of Samba 2.2.2 on Friday from one of the
Samba mirror sites, I think Belgium, and installed it on a Sun E450
running Solaris 2.6.
Today everything has fallen flat on its face. Unfortunately I am on
holiday this week so not able to deal with the problem directly, but via
telephone calls. Apparently what is happening is that smbd is gobbling
up all the

No Printer Port
Hi,
I am having problems adding printers to Windows.
The printers are setup on a Samba 3.0.2a server running on Solaris 9 and
using CUPS.
When I add the printer to Windows it seems to install OK but no printer port
is added.
The "Comment" and "Location" fields in the Windows printers box are also
empty as though it isn't talking to
the Samba server.
When I look at the

performance issue!!
we have an SUN E450 server with soalris 2.6 and 512mb RAM running samba. we
have a network and all the machines are connect through a switch. there are
about 40 users who simultaneously use the server running samba for file
service.
The set up is like this. there is an application on the server which is
shared and all the users have mapped their drive letter to that share. this

ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server (Solaris 2.6)
Hi,
I'm having a problem with one of the servers, an Sun E450 Solaris 2.6
box, that after some time it will no longer be able to send out LDAP
requests to the LDAP server.
The response to every ldap query is:
ldap_bind: Can't contact LDAP server
Checking the netstat output I see a lot (over 300) of TIME_WAIT state
request to the ldap server:

rsync speed
Hi,
I poked around the website and did some digging in the list archives but
thought i'd better pose my question here.
I'm using rsync to synchronize two directories on a Solaris 8 e450 server.
rsync copies about 22GB per night. It seems to take 50 minutes for the
copy to complete. which seems a little bit slow.
I'm currently running
# /opt/bin/rsync -v
rsync version 2.3.1

"Too many open files" error
We have a Sun E450 running Solaris 8 and Samba 2.2.8a as our domain controller.
We have had no problems with Samba until earlier this week when we have started
to get lots of these errors in log.smbd:

ZFS questions with mirrors
IHAC that is asking the following. any thoughts would be appreciated
Take two drives, zpool to make a mirror.
Remove a drive - and the server HANGS. Power off and reboot the server,
and everything comes up cleanly.
Take the same two drives (still Solaris 10). Install Veritas Volume
Manager (4.1). Mirror the two drives. Remove a drive - everything is
still running. Replace the drive, everything

Samba replacing NFS
Hi,
I have a number of web servers that mount their /htdocs (and /log and
/cgi-bin) directories from a large file server. I am currently using NFS
for this. The web servers are Linux, the file server a Sun E450. NFS seems
dreadfully slow, and I keep reading about how it doesn't do file locking.
Is there a good reason not to simply use samba, and share the volumes with
samba from the Sun, and

Unsolicited oplock breaks
Dear All,
we've been having some intermittent problems with students who's home directories are on a
Sun E450 running Samba 2.0.6. I'm not totally convinced that the problem is caused by the
server, but may be the network. However, I've had a look at the log.smb file and I'm seeing some
error messages that I've not come across before:

Win 9x printer problem
I am continuing to struggle with a strange SAMBA Printing problem. Here
are the details:
1) NT based clients can log on as guests or as users and can print in
either case with no problems.
2) Windows 9x clients can log in as either guest or as users and can access
shares with no problems.
3) Windows 9x clients attempting to print directly to the SAMBA printer
hang the print process and

Win2K Machine Accounts No Longer Valid after Samba PDC Upgrade (2.2.2 to 2.2.8a)
Symptom: After upgrading our Primary Domain Controller
from Samba 2.2.2 to Samba 2.2.8a, users attempting
to login from Windows 2000 clients are no longer
able to do so.
Details: After some research it was discovered that if a Windows
2000 client re-joins the domain served by the upgraded
version of Samba, users are then able to, once
