Quickbooks revisited
I did testing on generating this report from a 130 MB Quickbooks file. Locally, 15 seconds. Samba Server, 1:35. Shared off of my win98 Workstation, 2+ mins. I do not understand the reason it is SOO slow. I know it is a fairly large file. The only explanation I can come up with is the way QuickBooks is accessing the files. Maybe jumping all around the file, requiring many operations on the

two potentially troubling posts to full-disclosure
I haven't seen anything about this here and thought I should pass it along. christopher neitzert <chris at neitzert.com> made two postings to the full-disclosure list earlier today. They stated, in part: ***** Does anyone know of or have source related to a new, and unpublished ssh exploit? An ISP I work with has filtered all SSH connections due to several root level incidents

ACL Support? Where can I get it?
From what I've read on the list, there does not appear to be POSIX ACL support for rsync at this time, is this true? There does however appear to be a patch floating around out there, where can I find this patch. TIA -Justin -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Cisco firmwares 3.6.3 vs 3.8.6
Hi All, A question for those with Cisco 7940/60 SIP phones. I used to load POS3-06-03-00 Firmware to the cisco phones. A month or so ago, I ran some tests and found that latest 3.8.6 firmware worked well, and solved an issue or two on the phones. I've a number of users who work outside of the LAN. Our phones use DNS names to talk to A*k, so in theory, just enabling NAT makes the phone

nautilus problem and smbclient question
Hi, I'm having a problem getting smb to work through Nautilus and in trying to diagnose the problem, I ended up with another problem with smbclient(1), or more likely a misunderstanding on my part about how it is supposed to work. I'm using the following packages on an up2date RH8.0 box. # rpm -qa | grep samba samba-common-2.2.7-2 samba-2.2.7-2 samba-client-2.2.7-2 # rpm -qa | grep

CentOS 5.2 - Nautilus - file types are not associated with an action and icons are not displayed
Hi all, I use CentOS 5.2 as a desktop and the Gnome Nautilus doesn't display icons related to the file types and all associated actions ("open with") are lost. It is so bad, that the desktop shortcuts are displayed as ordinary files "Filesystem.desktop" or "openoffice.org-1.9-calc.desktop", and when I click on them, the Nautilus wants to know what it should

Can't browse network using nautilus
Hi, I'n using the nautilus file browser in a GNOME desktop environment on a FC2 system. If I enter smb:/// in the location bar in nautilus I can see the network but whenever I try to look at the shares on a computer I get a message saying that I do not have permissions to view the contents. I looked in the archives and found a thread on a similar problem. This thread mentioned that

Help implementing a simple Python port
Hello list, I wonder if anyone might be able to help me troubleshoot an attempt at porting some simple Python code to R. The function below is supposed to take a matrix containing item ratings from various users and, given a vector containing at least 1 rating and 1 missing value, employ a 'weighted slope one' algorithm to predict the missing values. The algorithm itself is fairly

weird characters in files created by gnome login on samba share
Hello, I just tried a gnome login with an empty home directory on a samba mounted directory, and this resulted in several files with strange characters in the filenames in the end. (as created by the initial gnome login) I cannot reproduce this by hand, and it certainly does not happen when I do the login on a local directory, or when I copy that local directory to the samba directory. I use

Ugh, Does Interfaces not work?
I'm a college student, but I also have an private network behind my firewall at college, and I have an ipsec tunnel to my office. I had to recently use the printer port on my firewall, so I ended up installing samba, and told it only to talk to my office network. Well, it managed to pick up the browser list..... and it got ahold of a local browser role as soon as it came up because I have a

Samba and Nautilus
Like a good many others, I encountered difficulty getting Nautilus to work properly with Samba, in my case using SuSE 9.0. It now works properly. Based on my experience, I offer the following suggestions. First, before trying to do anything complex, make certain that your lmhosts and hosts files are configured properly. Be sure that all IP addresses and host names the Linux side match
