Since you've compiled with default options, your smb.conf is located in
/usr/local/lib/smb.conf . You should copy your working smb.conf for version 2.2.7 (/etc/samba/smb.conf) to /usr/local/lib.
You should run ./testparm as well.

In your smb.conf file... there's a line something like this:
lock dir= /opt/samba/var/locks
Make sure this directory EXISTS and is read/writeable.
Just a suggestion.

How to start smb server when reboot?
Hi,
I installed Samba 2.0.3 on Linux 2.2.5. Every time I reboot system I found
the smb has not been started. But in the directory /etc/rc.d, the file "smb"
exists. When I run "smb restart",after a while, the samba server is ok. I
wonder why the samba server is not up when system reboot. Thanks a lot.
Followed is the content of the file "smb":
#! /bin/sh

The only thing I know is that tdb files are Trivial DataBase files. So it's a database used by samba to persistently store stuff. The file I was refering to accidentally had "winbind" and "id" in its name, so I just deleted it to see what it gives. Seems I made the right choice.
I have no idea how to view these files though. Maybe someone on the list knows?

Need Help: Sometimes Stop during smbd start
Hi
during Startup of SuSE-Linux 7.2 Prof. the PC is sometimes
( 1 of 10 times) stopping by start smbd. Reset knop the help
only. I have this problem with the samba version in SuSE
package and version 2.2.5 too. In the file ../rc3.d/S12smb I
added 2 lines to see if nmbd and smbd are startet.
I see nmbd is starting always, the text "SAMBA smbd
gestartet" is in case of fault not printing.

smbstatus hangs after upgrade from 2.2.8a to 3.0.6
Dear list,
I have just upgraded our main Samba server from version 2.2.8a to 3.0.6.
It seems to be working fine except for 2 things:
1. when I use smbstatus(or swat/status) only some of the connections
are listed and then smbstatus hangs forever(swat comes back after
a while, but only with some of the connections)
Have any of you experienced something similar ?

Xen and timekeeping
Hi everyone,
I have the problem with Xen domU's and timekeeping in dom0.
Time in dom0 was incorrect by 5 hours due to wrong timezone assumed. Fixed it
by ntpdate ntp.nist.gov. The time on a dom0 was changed. I didn't append
xen.independent_wallclock=1 to sysctl.conf thus the time in all domU's was
also changed. But THEY DIDN'T "KNOW" THAT!

Lingering IPC$ connections
I'm running the latest samba release (2.2.8a), and everything seems to
be running fine. Except for something that does not look quite right.
Connections to the IPC$ share are being left behind by samba once the
user has logged off. And what's even more troubling is that the pid
associated with the lingering IPC$ connection is picked up by the next
smbd process, and then you have one pid

RedHat sshd.init script typo ?

I noticed one small possible error in the
