Accepting Time Server
If samba and xntpd are running, you're done! Samba is a time server.
Setting the smb.conf parameter "time server = yes" will cause Samba to
advertise itself as a time server in the browse list through nmbd.
Regardless of this setting, clients can still set their time with the "net
time" command.

valid users and groups with winbind
Hi,
Just starting on this list.
I have samba (2.2.5a) on Linux/s390 and winbind authenticating and
providing shares.
I add the global to smb.conf:
  valid users = '@Domain Users'
After that, I can no longer get the share even though I am in the 'Domain
Users' group.
  # id poklcc+mikem
  uid=10001(POKLCC+mikem) gid=10000(POKLCC+Domain Users)
groups=10000(POKLCC+Domain Users)

Winbind authentication
Hi everyone,
First of all, could you please CC me, I am not (yet) subscribed to this
list.
Now my problem:
I created a test setup at my office that uses winbind to authenticate linux
users to a Windows NT server (they log in with DOMAIN+username), as described
in the winbindd manpage. I followed their setup completely.
(at my work I am using RedHat 7.1 and the winbindd daemon found in the

Samba and Cups.
Listers,
I encountered a problem with samba (2.2.7a) when I was setting CUPS (1.1.14)
up.
I set it up through the web interface, setting the appropriate values in
smb.conf:
[global]
<snip>
        printing = cups
        load printers = yes
        printcap name = cups
[printers]
        comment = All Printers
        path = /var/spool/samba
        browseable = no
        public = yes

Samba/Winbind on Solaris 9
hi all,
I am having some problems with getting winbind to work correctly with
Solaris 9.
When I change nsswitch.conf to say
passwd:	files winbind
group:	files winbind
I can make the server work serving out smb shares to W2k domain users,
but then I can't logon using local accounts. (ie, I cannot logon to
the console as root, or ssh as a local user). Anyone have this problem?

New samba connection will not work
I'm fairly new to samba but I've spent too long on this - can anyone help?
This system was previously working on another domain. Now I have tried to register it on the
production domain (it has been removed from the test domain and I've deleted the secrets file and
then added it to the live (OASIS) domain and I get
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32>net use * \\confasr1\midas

SAMBA 2.2.8 and W98/NT
Hi,
With WXP it's fine but with W98 or NT I don't see services.

Retry: RedHat, XFS, and ACL Support
Purpose: Create a File Server that can replace our windows file server.
System Details:
  RedHat 8
  Kernel 2.4.18-18 SGI XFS 1.2.0
  2 disks
    1 for the filesystem ext3
    1 for the shares using xfs
Most of the threads and articles I read about doing this told me that I
had to recompile the kernel for acl support. Then I found a post that
mention that XFS has built in ACL support. Which

Outlook .pst on a samba share; do or don't?
Hi listers.
 People here are trying to push me into moving the Outlook .psts on a samba
share for back-up reasons. I'd like to hear your experience about this: is
it feasible in the size of 20 users with 400...800MB each .pst? Any special
settings on samba side? Something special that I should pay attention to? Or
is just "NO"?

big file server
Hi
I plan to set up a big file server, something like motherboard with 4 ide
ports and an additional 4 ide daughter card, a PIV proc and 512 or 1024 MB
ram, a 100 or 1000 MB NIC, with 6 or 7 200 GB ide HDDs in a sigle box. I
don't need lightning performance, just disk space. Of course this would be
served by some linux os and samba
questions (relative to samba configuration and behaviour) :

Is Samba Shadowcopying can be used in Production Environement with more than 20 TB of data
Hi Friends,
I am currently using Samba on Centos 4.4 as a domain member of AD 2003 with
each user having a quota of 2GB(no of users is around 2,000). Now
the management wants to increase the quota to 10GB with this there will be
more than 20TB of data to be backup weekly which will take lots of hours.
Currently Veritas backup software is used to backup data on tapes. There is

Full wNT/w2K ACL conformance
We are planning to replace a quite big domain running W2K with Samba ( at
the very least, the DC ).
Though i'd love to have the extra security capabilities of W2K ( Kerberos )
as a DC, Samba/NT4 as PDC/BDC with ldapsam will more than suffice for now.
The show-stopper right now is this: we need to be able to assign "real"
Full Control permissions: a user who has "Full

Softswitch
Pardon my ignorance, but I was hoping someone could clear up something for
me.
- For a few POTS lines, digium has a single port card for that, or a T1 card
to a channel bank.
- For 10 or more lines, digium has a T1 or E1 card for that too based on PRI
channels
- For 100's to 1000's of lines, I suspect a soft-switch is in order???
A traditional phone company will sell:

Fw: Some Question
Hi Dave
> In the realm of internet radio id have to say 80% use winamp,
> or other players supporting http streaming.
Perhaps that is the case for stream listeners. I was quoting (from
memory) media players usage figures I read somewhere. Once someone is
using WMP, they are generally hooked, and there are 100's if not 1000's
of streams available in the Radio Tuner section.

icecast-2.3.2-kh17 versus icecast-2.3.2
Hi,
I've been using icecast-2.3.1 for some time now and it is really
working well for me, solid as a rock (no crashes) and running 100's of
streams and 1000's of listeners, but in order to support
authentication and have easier configuration I want to start using the
url authentication (esp. the stream_auth) and mount-name wildcards
that are supported by icecast-2.3.2-kh17.

15 min pause during boot - Setting up logical volume management
Hi all,
I rebooted a server having a 20TB XFS volume under LVM and wait about 15 min to boot.
It stays at;
Setting up logical volume management
For 15 min then proceeds to boot fine.
During this time, I see the 14 disks of the 20TB volume flashing quickly as though being read.
Nothing in my logs to indicate bad behavior.
I am running the latest 6,4 kernel.
Any one see this before?
