general questions about R on debian/powerpc
Hi,
I am about to but a laptop, and have narrowed the choices down to a
Dell Latitude 600 and an Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium (Princeton
provides these models at a discount for grad students).
I am biased towards the Powerbook, and would like to run Debian on it.
I have only used debian on i386 platforms so far. I use R quite
frequently, so I would be interested in your experience of running R

OK, ppc32 EH used to work better than this (although I haven't tried
it on 10.4). I'll have a look.

Compiling R for OS X 10.2.6 (Darwin 6.6)
Our lab just picked up a G4 Powerbook (1 GHz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.2.6). None
of us have any experience with Macs but for various reasons we need to have
one around for development.
In any case, we've installed fink, all the Apple Developer Tools and the
Dec2002updater to gcc 3.3. We're now trying to compile R 1.7.1 without too
much success. First we had to get g77, which turned out to

stream encoded in big-endian machine and then decoded in little-endian machine
Hi, all,
I have a question about encoding/decoding in big/little endian
machines. I have a client running in an old PowerBook G4 with
big-endian CPU, the audio stream is encoded then transmitted to a Mac
Mini with little-endian CPU, and decoded in this Mac Mini. I am
wondering the decoded stream is in big-endian or little-endian? What
kind of necessary steps I need to process when I build the

Apple cannot connect to RHLinux Samba
Hi All
I have a working samba server on RH Linux 7.3 (samba v2.2.4). My shares and
printers can be connected and used by my W95, W98 and XP clients - no
problems there.
However, my Apple (Powerbook G4 running OSX 10.1.4) cannot connect using the

X11 device
Hi,
I am working with R on a Mac Powerbook G4. As described a couple of
days ago, I would like to create an animation consisting of - say -
1000 plots (lattice: xyplot, wireframe etc.). Everything works
perfectly fine (thanks to all of you for the suggestions and ideas),
but before I am able to plot (.png's in a for-loop), I have to start
a X11 device. I was wondering if it is

Samba, VPN, and Mac OSX 10.4.2
We're having an odd problem with connecting to Samba shares over a VPN
with a Mac client.
We have several Mac clients connecting to a Samba 3.0.10-1.fc2
installation. Prior to upgrading them to Tiger, everything worked fine
both local and over an IPSec VPN.
After upgrading to Tiger, they still work fine when on our LAN. But if
they try to connect to a share over the VPN, Finder hangs.

JGR doesn't launch after updating to R 2.2.1
Dear r-helpers,
After updating to R version 2.2.1, 2005-12-20, powerpc-apple-
darwin7.9.0 (from binary), JGR wouldn't launch. I then deleted
everything I could find related to JGR, and reinstalled it from the
latest binary. Both R and JGR are installed in /Applications/
\~LocalApps/mathStat/.
Advice on how to identify the source of the problem?

Dear R Gang:
I have a Macintosh G4 powerbook, running OS 9.2. Last week I
ran a statistical analysis program that I wrote in R for two days
continuously. The program does repeated intensive computations on a
large data set.
The program completed its task successfully, but during the
process I noted that the computer seemed to be running unusually hot.
Shortly after the program stopped,

OS X proxy question
All,
I'm currently using R 2.0.1 on a Powerbook G4 with OS X 10.3.8. So far
the only way I've found to set my proxy is by doing
Sys.putenv("http_proxy"="<insert proxy url>:<proxy port>) everytime I
start up R.
This works fine, but I'd like to find a solution that doesnt require
manual input everytime I start up R. Does any one have a better way of
