PDC/Roving Profiles/and Password Encryption
Hi All, Well, despite my general idiocy I've managed to get PDC and roving profiles working perfectly in my test situation. Obviously, this isn't good enough since computers are the devil, so I've run into some more problems. Fortunately for the Samba team, this isn't a problem with Samba - I think it's more a problem with how our network is set up here. Basically,

Samba 3 Beta and Encryption Issues
Hi All, This is an update/question about the new beta release of Samba. I installed it onto a test bay. One machine is Redhat 7.3, one is XP. For our purposes, the clients need to have encryption turned off (IE: we enabled cleartext passwords). With Samba 2.2.7, I had PDC support, including roving profiles and login scripts working when ecryption was turned on, both server-side and

Roving Profile Issues
Hi Again, I figured out what my problem was with the encrypted passwords - it's sufficient to say that it was an error on my part, not the software. Oops. However, now I'm completely baffled. I can login to the domain perfectly (encryption is on, by the way), my home drive maps correctly, the login script runs as it is supposed to, but I'm getting an error about my remote

Microsoft and roving profile Outlook woes. Fixed.
Hi, One for the archives: Problem: Microsoft Outlook Express client takes a woefully gruesomely long time to start when using roving profiles on a Samba share. Fix: Turn off oplocks on the share. Eg: [netlogon] writeable = yes browseable = yes oplocks = no ... ... Eddie. -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

Roving profiles on Samba 2.0.6
I was using Samba 2.0.4 and I've upgraded to 2.0.6. I'm running on FreeBSD 3.3. Since I've upgraded, roaming profiles seem to be the default, and it's causing me some grief. I'm not ready to introduce them, and what happens is that when a user logs onto a machine with office 97, the office 97 policies get stored in their home directories. That's okay until they log onto

Set a login script but no profile?
Hello, I am so close!!! So far I have a Samba PDC that machines and users can log into, but here's the deal: I would like to find out how to allow them to log on and receive their login script, but not use a roving profile. Here are my relevant settings as they are set right now: ; logon drive = x: ; logon home = "\\Gluon\Gluon G" ; logon path = \\Jupiter\Profile\%U encrypt

Password issue
One of my accounts was having login failures when trying to send mail, but was able to check mail. I tried everything I could think of to see what the issue might be, but eventually went in and reset the password in the sql database (I knew the password, so I reset it to the same password). {SHA256-CRYPT}$5$VuS? {SHA256-CRYPT}$5$VI7? So the password was updated properly. Clients can still

Samba 2.2 -> 3.0.0 upgrade: questions + Internet Connection Wizard / Identities
Hello, I just upgraded from Samba 2.2.7 to Samba 3.0.0 on RedHat 9. I did this by uninstalling the 2.2.7 samba RPM's and then applying the Samba 3.0.0 RPM from samba.org, then putting my local changes back into smb.conf. I have also migrated my smb users from smbpasswd to tdbsam with the pdbedit utility as discussed in the HOWTO. It seems I have to rejoin my client boxes (windows 2000 pro)

Network path not found - Windows to Linux connection
I am trying to use Samba to access files on Linux server from a Windows XP client. The server is running RedHat Linux 9 with Samba 3.0.21a installed, and the client is running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2. After installing the new Samba package on the server, I edited the configuration file, started the service and added a user with smbpasswd. To test that this was all working, I

Wierd Configuration
Hi Everyone, I have a strange network design problem and I suspect that Samba may be part of the solution. Any suggestions welcome. :-) Here goes: Two organisations are sharing a single network of 30 Win95/98 clients with a few XP workstations. The network is owned and managed by a third organisation and the Internet connection is not too hot. So far so good :-). Org-1 wants to pay for their own

feature: RequiredAuthentications
Hi, probably an ignorant question, maybe I'm missing something ... Is there a way for a sshd server to be able to enforce both client host key authentication as well as user authentication, say for roving user-administered laptops. So a sysadmin can restrict access to allow only client hosts which can pass the HostbasedAuthentication tests, whatever the current IP name/address, but still

Trouble migrating from plain text to encrypted passwords
Hi, I'm looking for some help to migrate from plain text to encrypted passwords. I'm using smbpasswd for authentication on a FreeBSD 4.9 server with samba 2.2.8. When we set up our server, we had Win95 clients with plain text passwords. As we introduced Win98 clients, we just kept with the plain text passwords. Now we are looking at XP clients and enctrypted passwords. My understanding

Little list of horrors.
Hi all, I was investigating the SMB signing problems between Win2k clients and Windows XP servers and thought I'd take a look to see if there were any hotfix patches for Win2k that were post service pack 2. I discovered this list.... : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com/support/ServicePacks/Windows/2000/Win2000_Post-SP2_Hotfixes.asp of *amazing*

newbie profile path problem
Hi all, I've been working on setting up samba for a small home network, 3 win98se machines, and RH9 with samba 2.2.7 Roving profiles are working, with domain logins, just fine. The problem I'm having is that although I _think_ I've set it up properly, the profile items get copied into the users home directory, not the the directory I've set up. I've gone through all the faqs

Encrypt Passwords & Mixed Case Passwords
Hello! I have a query regarding the use of "encrypt passwords = yes" and is wondering if anyone can help me with it. If I recall correctly, when using "encrypt passwords = no" , Samba will lookup the username/password via the UNIX /etc/passwd file or equivalent. And as the password can have mixed-case passwords, the "password level = x" parameter is used to

How to use local profiles in samba PDC?
How do you enable local profile creation on machines connected to a samba PDC? I thought it would be automatic, but it doesn't seem to be. If there isn't a roving profile, windows complains it can't find your profile on the server, then instead of creating a local one, it throws up this message: "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary

Encrypting files in Rails
So far the tutorials I''ve seen are for encrypting text and then decrypting it back. So for example you have a plaintext = "some text" you encrypt it and then you decrypt it depending on how you encrypted it. What I am looking for is to encrypt a whole file and then store it. for example I allow my users to upload .doc/.xls files. I want to encrypt those files so I would not
