Quickbooks revisited
I did testing on generating this report from a 130 MB Quickbooks file. Locally, 15 seconds. Samba Server, 1:35. Shared off of my win98 Workstation, 2+ mins. I do not understand the reason it is SOO slow. I know it is a fairly large file. The only explanation I can come up with is the way QuickBooks is accessing the files. Maybe jumping all around the file, requiring many operations on the

DHCP & interfaces
Setup: I am running a fresh install of RedHat 6.1 with Samba 2.0.5a installed. My samba machine receives its ip address through a WinNT DHCP server. Problem: When I start Samba, it tries to use the loopback adapter to broadcast its NetBios messages accoridng to tcpdump. Solution #1: Set interface to use in smb.conf file. This is rejected since the address of the interface is issued by the DHCP

Backing Up Files I Don't Own
Hi, I need to back up all of /home on a remote server for which I have root access but cannot (and will not) do root logins via ssh. Of course if I attempt to rsync files that I don't own, rsync skips over them. My account is allowed to sudo, if that helps. How can I use rsync to do the following: rsync -av --compress --progress --delete -e me@SomeRemoteServer:/home

some shares in browselist not showing up in spite of browseable = yes
Hello, In my smb.conf (or actually, in "committees.conf" included from smb.conf, a defined share does not show up in the browselist, nor any other share defined AFTER that particular one (either in that file or in smb.conf after the include statement). The shares are accessable though (when mapped to a drive letter or used as UNC). Ofcourse I tried to look for odd

Samba + Quickbooks
This is set up with Win2K boxes sharing a QB file on a SAMBA share. It may be quite different than with 95-98x-ME(Miserable Edition). There are two or more problems - one thing I identified is that it is possible for two computers to connect to the QB(QuickBooks) share using the same quick books logon - something that will cause data corruption. (Something that could have been easily

Seeking help with Samba shares & OPLOCKS & Quickbooks databases
I thought I had things figured out, but guess not. I have multi-user Quickbooks databases that functioned fine on a Novell server but are behaving badly on a Samba share. I have created a separate share for the Quickbook databases, users are running Win XP Pro, latest patches, and the Quickbooks application installed on the desktop. It is a multiuser version. Server is RedHat ES 3, Samba

Quickbooks and Samba and Oplocks... OH MY
It is widely known that Quickbooks has a horrible storage engine, "requires" Windows to host multiuser access, etc. However, I've successfully been storing QuickBooks files on Samba shares at a handful of locations with no real issues other than slight performance degradation. However, a somewhat recent thread here mentioned the proper use of oplock'ing in the Samba configuration

Accounting package recommendations
Hi, I am looking for an offline accounting package recommendation, please. I enjoyed using Xero accounting, but need something that's offline, and where the data remains my property. Having used Quickbooks on Windows in the past, I am looking for something similar. Any recommendations? -- Kind Regards Rudi Ahlers Website: http://www.rudiahlers.co.za

Directory and File Perms
I have a directory shared out via Samba for Quickbooks and seem to have some issues with permissions. The directory being shared is a subdirectory in an ext3 partition being mounted with the acl option. It has been setup as follows: chown root:DOMAIN\AD_Group /mnt/Intuit_Data/ chmod 2770 /mnt/Intuit_Data/ And the Samba share config is has: create mask = 0660 directory mask =

Samba + Quickbooks file problems
I updated samba to samba-2.0.7-4 (RedHat RPM). That didn't help. I changed the file ownership to user.group from user.user. That didn't help. I changed the file permissions to -rwxrwxr-- as you had suggested, and then it worked. (QuickBooks 99 needs *both* the file permissions set as noted *and* the ownership also.) However, when everyone closes QuickBooks the QBI file is deleted, and

SAMBA digest 2065
Hi, Thanks for your help. I set my samba debug level = 3. How to run it with verbose logs? I can't find it under samba-1.9.17p4/docs. Where can I find troubleshooting docs? Could you tell me the web site address? I can't find it under http://us1.samba.org/samba/. I tried running net view \\morpheus (that is our linux) and got the following: On NTs: c:\> net view \\morpheus

Debian Sarge (testing), Samba 3.0 RC4 and Quickbooks
Debian and Samba Teams: I'm having a really weird problem with Samba 3.0Beta2+RC4 on my Debian Sarge (testing) system with Quickbooks Pro 2002 multi-user version. The version of my question is: Does anybody know what the proper global, share, and permissions settings should be to support multi-user Quickbooks on a Samba share? The Long Version: The Quickbooks data-file resides on it's

oplocks, QuickBooks (Samba 3)
Hi there, Can somebody please explain to me why Samba 3 requires 'oplocks = no' on shares for programs like Quickbooks to operate properly with multiple users, where Samba 2 didn't? Without this option, Quickbooks will complain about file corruption when a second user tries to open a file. This option, however, makes the particular share that the option is present in _very_ slow

Domain Users cannot use quickbooks
Hi all; the other day we tried to get ambitious and get the office onto a samba domain. Things were fine, but our quickbooks users could not use quickbooks because they were domain restricted users and needed to be domain standard users. Anyone have any help on how to get the users in question to be power users? Mike hillyer
