Oplocks not taking place at all unless fake oplocks = yes - Update
I've modified the contention limit in attempt to troubleshoot this, thinking that perhaps the client may be requesting multiple oplocks for whatever reason. The client is still not getting an oplock without specifying 'fake oplocks = yes'. I'm open to any ideas for troubleshooting. I've also checked to see if oplocks are explicitly disabled on the client, and they are not.

Oplocks not taking place at all unless fake oplocks = yes
Hi folks I'm running two Samba servers. One is on Ubuntu 5.10
(samba-3.0.14a-6ubuntu1), the other is SuSE Linux Enterprise Server
(samba-3.0.20b-3.4). The Ubuntu box is on my local network, and the
SLES box is across a WAN with an intervening WAFS appliance with TCP
acceleration.
Neither set-up seems to grant an oplock to the client unless I turn on
'fake oplocks'. I've set

oplocks, kernel oplocks, kernel share modes, .. - how it all works?
Hi!
I'm trying to understand how various ways to grant a file lease to (windows) clients
works. Especially in context when files are being modified locally on the linux
filesystem.
For example, there's this wording in man smb.conf:
kernel share modes
...
Kernel share modes provide a minimal level of interoperability with
local UNIX processes and NFS operations by

SOLVED - Oplocks not taking place at all unless fake oplocks = yes
The kernel on my server appears to be refusing oplocks altogether. Setting 'kernel oplocks = no' resolved the issue. Is there any caveats I should be aware of?

Oplocks for veto'd files (Samba 2.2.8a on SuSE 9.0)
In my smb.conf file, I've got the following section:

comment = Home Directories
valid users = %S
guest ok = no
read only = No
create mask = 0640
directory mask = 0750
browseable = No
veto oplock files = /*.mdb/*.MDB/*.pst/*.PST/
And yet, in the syslog, I'm still getting these...

Turning oplocks off, how to do?
Greetings All,
Does anyone know how to turn oplocks off? I have tried everything
I can think of to disable this feature but each time the PC
will cache the file. If anybody has turned this off please send
me your configuration file. Here is the latest config file I have
tried. Thanks for any help,
David.

Samba4 oplocks: LibreOffice and Word file locking
Hi
Lan with S4 and built-in file server for Windows clients. nfs for Linux
clients.
We are using LibreOffice to share documents and file locking works fine.
The first guy to open the doc gets the lock and a message is displayed
on other clients (windows or Linux) that the file is open.
Fine
Some users must however use Word 2010 to edit documents. Then file
locking doesn't work: anyone

Level 2 Oplocks.
I know in 2.0.5a, level2 oplocks were broken. Can I safely use them in 2.0.6? I
recall getting a performance increase when using them.

visual studio + oplocks
Hi,
I wonder if anyone else has seen this problem with visual studio 5.0.sp3
We are running NT4.0 sp3 + some updates such as euro etc.
The problem is a bit of a surprise as it makes vc++ unusable on a samba share with oplocks on.
it is surprising because I have definitely used vc++ in this configuration in the past.
It occurs with all versions of samba 1.9.18 from p3 which we use as standard

Kernel Oplocks and FC2
Hi All,
I am running Samba version 3.0.7-2.FC2.
I've been noticing the following messages in /var/log/messages:
Sep 22 09:35:47 www kernel: lease broken - owner pid = 6024
Sep 22 09:36:32 www kernel: lease broken - owner pid = 25134
I've been told that if I place "kernel oplocks = false" in my
smb.conf file, I won't see this message any more.
However, if I do this, does

oplocks
Hello
I've just installed a samba server on a OS X server.
I enable oplocks and it's good for rtf, odt or doc.
But with iWork files it's very strange, iWork saves files in folder
and oplocks didn't work.
If someone has already do it or has an idea :)

smbd dies intermittantly & oplocks
G'day,
Brief LAN Layout:
We have 2 vlans, 1 has WinNT 4 sp6a running as the PDC, there are 2
Slackware 7.1, 2.2.19 kernel, boxes, running samba 2.2.0, which both are
on the 2 vlans. One linux box is the PDC for it's vlan.
Both linux boxes run 2 copies of samba together, though the problem
of smbd dieing was there when only 1 samba copy was running on each box.
Cients are Win9x, with a

Samba session timeout and oplocks
Hello
I have a problem that I don't know where it originates.
The following situation :
A samba server on a colocation with a public and a private
ip-address. The smb service is accessible on the private ip-address.
Clients connect to the samba server through a windows vpn
(pptp) and get an address in the same private range as the
samba server has.
They know start an application that uses a

Oplocks - when do they help
Hi,
I googled around and the general wisdom seems to be that oplocks provide a performance gain if files are accessed by a single client at a time (that is, if the oplock does not break).
What I can't figure out is what test can show this performance gain. I mean, theoretically, document-editing applications (Word, excel) save and load whole files and hence do not benefit from oplocks.

How to Turn of oplocks in version 2?
Greetings All,
I am trying to turn off oplocks and can not seem to figure
out which parameters to use. I have tried setting
oplocks = False in both the global section and in my
share section. I have also tried setting veto oplock files = /*.txt/
in my share section. Each time I try this and restart the
smbd program I get the same behaviour on the PC side. The file is
cached on the PC side (I
