OCFS2 volumes do no mount automatically on RHEL4 also
On RHEL4 also, the service o2cb starts later than _netdev device mounts.
So mount fails. Should the o2cb service start earlier to fix this?

Mapping of Unix groups to Samba user permissions
I ran into a problem today which surprised me, and after two hours of
reading and testing I am more confused than ever, so I feel the need
for a sanity check. It would be good to have a clear and authoritative
article about this somewhere; I thought it would be in either "Using
Samba" or in the HOWTO, but I don't see it there.
I am using Samba in several installations in homes and

ACL changes on Samba NT 4.0 Member Server

share from Windows XP Pro Security tab shows Everyone, and root (Unix
Group\root) without any Permissions. When trying to add permissions
from XP while logged on as CPDOM+admin the error is display "Unable to

Large backup files from ntbackup to a samba share
Hi all,
I'm experiencing a problem when NTBACKING'UP my W2000 Server files against
a Linux 2.4.9 + ReiserFS 3.6 file system + Samba share.
It works OK for the first 4 Gb's around file size. Then ntbackup stops
serving data and the file on the samba side appears to be downsized to 0 and
growing ssssslowly. Once you stop ntbackup by killing the process, the file
reappears at its real

create mask not fully working?
Hi
I have Debian/stable and samba 3.2.5.
I have set this (smb.conf):
...
create mode = 0770
directory mask = 0770
...
and the files created have those permissions:
drwxrwx--- 2 piotrlg piotrlg 22 2010-05-06 14:51 nowy3
-rwxrw---- 1 piotrlg piotrlg 10752 2010-05-06 14:51 nowy3.doc
please note the lack of x bit for group file permission (for directory
it works as expected).

strange locks
Hi,
I added these lines to smb.conf:
kernel op locks = false
op locks = false
strict locking = true
so I could see some locks from the unix level.
It worked sorta, I see the locks for big files
(but not the locks I was expecting), but for little
files it shows nothing:
# ./lock_list /opt/testsambashare/mattest.doc
# ./lock_list /opt/testsambashare/contents.doc

Cannot change File Attributes
Hi list,
i've upgraded Samba 3.0.14a to 3.0.20b (debian package) and ran into
following problem:
I cannot change the file-attribute (read-only, hidden, archive) from a
file via the windows explorer as an ordinary user. The error "access
denied" occurs.
The file has following permissions on Unix:

Testing for membership in an array of strings
As an R beginner, I feel brain dead today as I can not find the answer
to a relatively simple question.
Given a array of string values, for example lets say "mary", "bob",
"danny", "sue", and "jane".
I am trying to determine how to perform a logical test to determine if
a variable is an exact match for one of the string values in the array

shared files not locked -> samba culprit or clients?
hello,
i have a question concerning the locking feature of samba (both 2.2.8
and 3.0.0) that i haven't found answered in the documentation. at this
point i am not sure, whether it's a bug in samba, the client
applications or simply a misunderstanding of the locking feature itself
on my part - at any rate it's a pressing problem, as my clients are
losing both their data as well as

row selection based on median in data frame
Hi. I am having trouble thinking of an easy way to grab rows out of a
data frame. I want to select the rows with a median value when the
rows are similar.
A simple example is this table, which I could read into a data frame.
I would like to find a new data frame with only the rows with a median
value for the "c" column given a certain "a" value.
For example, the c values

Column renaming
Dear all,
Is there a less cumbersome way to rename a column by name (as opposed
to index) than --
names( X)[ names[ X] == "bob"]<-"sue"
?
A semi-related question: how does one get the index of a column by
name, something along the lines of col.index( X, "sue") ?
