samba pdc/roving profiles/encrypted passwords
It is my understanding that roving profiles cannot be implemented without using encrypted passwords. It is also my understanding that encrypted passwords cannot be implemented without pointing smb.conf to a windows password server.
I'm trying to set up a samba server on a Linux (RedHat 7.3) to act as a PDC and a provider for roving profiles - when I do things with cleartext (encryption

I have win2k pro SP2 client trying to save/retrieve roaming profile from

for some other solutions on the newsgroup, no luck so far.
Here is the scnario:

Controlling use of roaming profiles
We are using a system running Red Hat Linux 7.0 with Samba 2.2.7a as
our PDC.
For the most part, we want to use roaming profiles, so that users'
settings are backed up via the PDC, and are available if they need to
change or reinstall their Windows desktop machine. However, there are
a few Windows systems (running NT 4.0 or Windows 2000) for which
we would like to be able to disable roaming

samba3 win2k roaming profiles.
I'm running Windows 2000 Professional and Samba 3.0.1 and I can't seem
to get roaming profiles to work right. When there are no profiles
stored locally on the win2k machine, and a user logs in for the first
time, it successfully reads the profile from the server in the
\\netlogon\Default User share. Next, if you manually copy the profile
to server and login to the workstation, it

No Roaming profiles local only
On a windows server there is a local profile by default unless you tell it
to have a roaming profile. I want to have the same thing happen. All the
machines say that they used the local copy then a couple seconds later
it says it could not copy to the server and any changes will not be saved.
I know that I could let it be a roaming and switch it to a local later

Symlinks and roaming profiles
Hi all,
Has anyone else had trouble (or not) with symlinks created in root
preexec scripts and roaming profile directories? I'm trying to add a
"shared links" director (symlink) to everyone's favorites, and I get
error loading profiles where a symlink loop is forming (ends up with

migrating local user profiles to roaming domain profiles
I have a network of 2K and XP clients that I am migrating to a domain using Samba 3 as a
PDC. I have the domain working quite well after quite a bit of tweaking. My problem is
that I want people to logon to the domain, but I also want them to keep their profiles
from their local users. How can I go about this?

Roaming profiles with Samba3
Good morning everyone.
I wanted to ask the people on this list who are currently using roaming
profiles with samba 3 how it is working? I worked a little with roaming
profiles with 2.2.8a, but it was not working as well as I wanted it to and
im hoping that samba 3 roaming profiles are working pretty well.
Our network here is really calling for roaming profiles to be a major
option here. Our

Hi,
Below is a snippet of my .conf file that worked in 2.2.7a;

read only = no

guest ok = yes
[profile]

Rowland, thanks for your prompt reply as usual!
Yeah sure, have pasted it below.? Just an update - I've double checked

gets written to the server and no error message. So in fact, it's just

Roaming Profiles: Advantages and disadvantages?
Hello everyone. I wanted to get some feedback and opinions from people
regarding the use of Roaming profiles.
originally, I was planning on using roaming profiles. However, I am
starting to wonder if this is such a good idea. The reason is that, if I
implement roaming profiles, there is a good chance that there will be
network congestion as well as a lot of stress on the server. (50 users so

My Documents folder and roaming profiles.
Hi All,
I don't know whether here is the right place to ask as this question is
probably more Windows related than Samba related but I thought someone here
might have some ideas.
I've got a Samba 2.2.5 PDC (running on FreeBSD but that doesn't really
matter) serving Windows XP machines.
The roaming profiles are set to be stored in a different share to the users
home directory so

Turning Off Roaming Profiles? (resend)
Sigh, here is me, trying to make a decent first impression of myself by
providing as much information as I could, and then Outlook Expresses 'Send
message later' option does something I didn't expect it to. So, here is the
full message.
Basically, as the subject says, I've found heaps of information on turning
them on, but I don't particularly want them as my profile is quite

Deleting Roaming Profiles
Hello,
If you don?t want (Who wants ?) to save roaming profiles under
Winnt\Profiles, than you have to change, or create (if not exist) a
registry string:
Run regedt32.exe and locate the key entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Add (or change) the following string:
DeleteRoamingCache
Standard value is 0, it has to be 1
All the Best.
