Bizarre problem - happens only under XP and not 2000
I have a very strange problem, which no one has been able to fathom to
this point so I'm hoping that someone here may have encountered
something similar. I'd better note down some background details first.
Relevant machines involved:
Win2K Adv. Server SP3 (acting as Active Directory primary)
Win2K Pro SP3 (authenticates against Win2K server above)
WinXP Pro SP1 (authenticates against

where are all the Redhat 8 -devel packages?
I'm probably missing something really simple.
I've installed an RH8 IAM in AWS and I'm trying to build packages on it.
I've noticed there are many *-devel packages that I cannot install:

[ec2-user at site1-vpn ~]$ sudo yum install trousers-devel

Thanks Samba Community!!!
You folks are the greatest.
Rolled out my first Samba "member server" today.
Read the stuff from SWAT, and it worked the first time on RH7.3, after it
failed on RH8
You folks are the best, we're struggling to stay afloat and M$ squeezes us
for more.
(RH is pushing me to Debian by the day!!!)
There will be a lot more Samba in the farm soon.
My deepest grattitude.

Samba RPMs for RedHat/FC and idmap_rid
As discussed previously on this list, Samba RPMs for
Fedora Core do not include idmap_rid support. This is
also true for older RedHat distributions. SuSE on the
other hand, seems to have been patching in idmap_rid
support since 3.0.5 or so; and with trusted domain
support, to boot. Harrumph.
I've been able to rebuild samba srpms on FC2 and
RedHat 8 by patching the samba distributed rpms,

building initrd.img with updated drivers
Can someone point me to instructions on how to build a
pxeboot/initrd.img with updated drivers. I would like to pxe boot and
install rh8 on a newer machine, and the pxeboot files that come with rh8
(2.4.20-8) don't support my e1000 NIC. I believe that the newer
2.4.20-28.8 drivers will, but I'm having trouble finding instructions in

Printing with CUPS & Samba...
I am trying to print from both a Win98 PC via Samba and a Red Hat 8.0
workstation to an HP 4 Plus printer that is connected to a Red Hat 8.0
server. I have managed to get the Win98 PC working OK, but am having
difficulty with the RH8 workstation.
I set the printer up using a browser with <Server>:631, calling it HP4Plus,
and I can send a test print from the browser on the RH8 box via

RH8 guest: bad fs?
I recently reinstalled RH8 as a VMware guest on a WinXP box.
I used a previously proven script at level 3, containing, in
one line with no inappropriate spaces:
mount -t smbfs -o user,noauto,dmask=777,fmask=777,username=xx,
password=yy //DELLBOX/linuxShare /mnt/linuxShare
I get a failure that reports numerous possibilities including
bad fs, and other other things. I suspect I omitted a

nmbd in redhat 8.0
If I enable wins support = yes & I start smbd it starts smb & nmb. When I
restart the service it says that there is no nmb service at 10045 running.
When I do a ps -aux, you can still see the service running. They will
keep building up until I manually delete them. Does anyone know how to
fix this?

moving from RH8 to CentOS5.1
Hi all,
Is there a way to 'automatically' recreate users/permissions when moving
from RH8 (yes, I know...way old) to CentOS5.1 or is it just simpler to
recreate the users manually?
Total users on this system is < 20.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all,
Hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction and/or
help me solve my problem.
We have a number of Linux servers (RH6.2 -> RH8) which connect to the
same share on a Win2000 Server. We've been working kinda hard to get
everything upgraded to either RH7.3 or RH8.0 since we rarely get the
opportunity. 2 similar servers (one dev, one prod) access this same

Quota question
I am having problems with quotas on a RH8 server. I have compiled samba
with the --with-quotas and --with-sys-quotas. If I leave the default kernel
on rh8, which is 2.4.18-4, and set the user's quota, eg 10MB, the capacity
is shown as 10MB. I compiled the newest kernel with the quota options:
CONFIG_QUOTA=y
CONFIG_QFMT_V2=y
The quotas still work, however the disk size reported as the

CentOS, PHP & OwnCloud/Nextcloud: the version dilemma
Hi,
I'm currently experimenting with OwnCloud and Nextcloud on a sandbox
CentOS 7 server. I've been using OwnCloud for the last two years for my
own purposes on a Slackware server, and I'm quite happy with it.
In my humble opinion, every admin who wants to host OwnCloud or
Nextcloud on a RHEL/CentOS server is confronted with a version dilemma.
1. CentOS 7 sports PHP 5.4, which has

2GB limit in Samba?
Hi.
Is there such a limit to 2GB in samba 2.2.8a-1? I get a "File imit exceeded"
when I try to tar or cp smth to a smbmount. On both machines I can
successfully do dd if=/dev/zero and create a file of 3GB, I can also tar
-cvf it but no cp to smb. RH8 if it matters...
