logon from WIN ME
After reading docs several times I still can't get Windows ME machines to map to my Red Hat 9 Linux machine. I can connect from the Linux machine but not to it. I'm connected through an SMC firewall/router and have tried with the firewall shut down. I can ping the Linux machine from Windows but NBTSTAT -A does not recognize the Linux box. My smb.conf file is: [global] workgroup =

Samba Start
How are you verifying? Have you tried using top and looking for smbd and nmbd? Swat may be giving you erroneous info if that is what you are using to verify. Using ACLs
I am trying to change some ACLs on some files and directories. I have samba binaries with acl support compiled in. I am using an XFS filesystem. The Mandrake kernel supports acls by default. When I right click on the file in Windows explorer and change the permissions, I get an access denied error. If I use smbcacls, I get the following: [root@luna tmp]# smbcacls //luna/tmp test.txt -U jim -A

Samba Printing
Good Afternoon, We recently added encrypted smb passwords to our site. I just tried to add a printer to samba and it will not work. I tried to connect to \\sambahost\printer and it will not connect. All the older printers still work. I just wonder if there is an extra step I need to perform now when I add printers? Thanks for your time, Bill -- William M. Fennell Network Administrator

Editing the registry on NT clients
Hi all, I seem to remember that some time ago (after some nasty VBScript virus or other) that there were postings to the list about how a registry change could be rolled out to all the client workstations with Samba. Of course, now I'd like to try it, I can't find the details any more. Can anyone tell me how its done? I thought there was functionality in rpcclient, but can't find

Recommended passdb backend
We're in the midst of setting up a Samba 3 system as our PDC. I come from a Samba 2 world, where the passdb backend was smbpasswd. What's the ... er, 'best' passdb backend at this point? To qualify best, there's no limitations on the type of storage used (LDAP, MySQL, XML, etc). I'm just looking for something that's going to make integration with a 2000/XP domain

Samba Domain Login
Okay, I'm really starting to run out of ideas here. Any help would really be handy. I'm looking after a small network, clients are running win2000 SP3 and a Linux Server running samba, doing domain logins. Everything is working fine apart from two machines (from ten). Probably once a week one of them will fail to login in after a reboot or log off. If any user tries to login into the

dfs replication
Hi, I am considering using the dfs options in samba. The question I have is about file replication. I want to set up dfs between two servers (one dfs share points to two real shares). In particular, I want have a share on one and a replica on the other as a fallback in the even of the first failing. I have done it on windows 2K server before. I am considering using rsync to replicate the files

The following error occured attempting to join the domain: The account used is a computer account. Use your global user account or local user account to access this server. I am using openldap if that makes any difference. Jim

smb client file list
Hello, Am new to this list so pardon if this question has been asked before. I am trying to find a way to access MS "net shares" and be able to execute "net use" without installing MS. I am looking at a floppy-based linux+samba solution. Most of the floppy linux contain apps I don't need or are centered more towards a router. So I now plan to create my own bootable

Roaming Profiles: Advantages and disadvantages?
Hello everyone. I wanted to get some feedback and opinions from people regarding the use of Roaming profiles. originally, I was planning on using roaming profiles. However, I am starting to wonder if this is such a good idea. The reason is that, if I implement roaming profiles, there is a good chance that there will be network congestion as well as a lot of stress on the server. (50 users so

DOS Properties Not Networkable?
If I right-click on an executable program (like a DOS batch file) that resides on a samba share and set properties like "full screen", that property is remembered on the machine with which I made the change. However, if I go to another machine and run that file, it uses the default properties. Doing a right-click from the other machine and viewing the properties also shows all the

problem logging on to samba domain (pdc) from a win x pworkstation
If I'm not mistaken, the sign or seal hack from samba2.2.3 is broken. Use the newer hack or manually modify your registry. Small/Medium Samba Install
I am currently researching the possibility of slowly moving an existing Novell network [with all Windows clients except mine :)] to something Linux based. I have about 900 clients that would be slowly migrated if this whole thing is feasible. The version of NetWare we are using now is no longer "officially supported" from Novell, so it is becoming more and more difficult to successfully

WAS: XP home -> Samba NOW: Must be other networking issues...
Thank you to all who helped me with this problem. I am now convinced the problem is not just something wrong in the smb.conf file, but must be more of a port deny issue or something. Couple of questions: Do all XP computers (including XP home?) need the 'plain-password-hack' to talk to a Samba server? Remember XP Home is different than XP Pro, XP Home can not join a domain, more like
