change local & domain sids and implications
hi everybody
I'm thinking I'll grab whole lot of my ldap backend and
change SID - what will this cause to workstation/machine
members?
I'm guessing users account should be fine and people would
be able to log in but machine would probably have to rejoin
(if I can call it that, because domain name is different).
You probably already see what I'm hoping I can do - I hope I
can

Renaming a PDC hostname/domain remotely
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA512
Assuming they exist, could someone point me to any resources that could
assist me in renaming a Samba PDC's hostname and the domain it serves
remotely *without* forcing the client workstations to have to
manually-rejoin?
If such things do not exist, 1) what effects should I expect in
undertaking such an action, and 2) is there a standard

Computer name in ADUC
Hi all,
When I change the name of a Windows 10 client with System properties ->
computer name -> Modify , either by just changing the name or remove and
rejoin to the domain , in the ADUC console the name of the computer is
unchanged .
In the General tab of the computer Properties , the "Computer Name (pre

Problem with Domain SID
Hi all,
We have a small network with WinXP Prof SP2 machines and a Linux (Debian)
PDC using Samba 3.0.22.
We encountered the following situation:
One user was not able to lo into the domain any more some days ago. Using
logging on samba side, I found out that samba correctly authenticates the
machine and the workstation. Though, XP did not log in, giving a message
that the password might not

Can't Join Domain "The User name cannot be found"
I have a small Samba installation, two servers and about 10
workstations. The hard drive on one of the Windows XP workstations
failed. I cloned a drive a from an identical machine and replaced the
defective drive. When it came up it had the name of the original
machine (which was off). It worked fine.
This group is small and fairly stable so I add machines to the domain
manually. The server

Trying to add workstation to smb domain and get access denied
Rebooted my system for a windows update. When it came back up,
It said the trust between my workstation and DC was broken.
(Running Windows 7x64 SP1). Very odd, haven't seen that for a while.
I thought it would be easy: unjoin/rejoin. But upon trying to rejoin,
I get:
The join operation was not successful. This could be because an existing

no mapping between account names and security ids was done
I use a openLDAP database for authentication on my Redhat 7.2 server. The
domain is "HOME". I have had no problem adding trust accounts and
authenticating against it.
Today I had to change the name of my Win2K workstation from poseiden to
poseiden1 for compatibility with a package I am testing. Once I changed it
and put in a new trust account, I could not rejoin the domain.
I gave up and

Trust Relationship between this work station and primary domain failed
Hai,
Was this pc a member of any NT4 Domain in the past?
You can try the following.
Login as a Local Administrator on the pc. ( you may need to create one first. )
Open PowerShell as administrator ( you need powershell 3.0 for this )
Run:
Reset-ComputerMachinePassword -Server AD_DC.DOMAIN.TLD -Credential YOUR_AD_DOM\Adminstrator
Restart-Computer
No powershell V3.
netdom.exe resetpwd

changing DOMAIN name on samba PDC
For historic reasons we have a DOMAIN name of 'WORKGROUP' on our one
server only samba PDC. Now that we have upgradced to 3.0.25
We would like to change this to something more sensible, but are
concerned what the consequences will be for the Win XP Pro workstations
that are currently joined to this domain.
which of the following scenarios will we likely face after the change?

Joining domain XP
Have set up machine accounts as recommended in your docs, using root as
authority to change to domain but half of the XP clients complain
'specified user does not exist'. This problem is not consistent and has
occurred seemingly at random with a test XP pro workstation on
continually attempting to leave & then rejoin the domain - any ideas out
there?

Rejoining an XP workstation to a domain
Hello,
I have been trying to rejoin a computer to a newly remade PDC on the same domain name using Samba 2.2.7 on RedHat 9. I get this error message everytime I try:
Title: "Computer Name Changes"

Moving samba PDC to new machine (same name?)
I'm using a tdbsam database with Samba 3.0.11 on a machine that's
getting a little long in the tooth. I'd like to move the whole deal to
a new machine without any reconfiguring on the clients - I'm happy with
a little downtime - out of office hours the system is hardly used
anyway. I'd like to upgrade to 3.0.21c at the same time.
I'm thinking:

Some hint on migration from a set of NT4 domains to an AD domain...
I've lurked (and posted) on that list by some month, getting many
vaulable informations, but still i've many doubts.
Most of my doubt i think came from the fact that 'AD' (generally) a is
a very complex beast, and if samba in NT4 mode fit very well in a UNIX
environment (and mind ;), samba in AD mode forced me to think in some
''microsoft way'. And i'm not used to.

Renaming a computer on a Samba domain
We shift computers around a lot, and therefore need to rename several
whenever we get new batches of systems in.
Tried simply renaming a system while on the domain, but got an "access
denied" error. I WAS able to disjoin the domain, remove the LDAP entry
for the computer, log in as a local administrator, rename the computer,
and rejoin the domain a different computer name.
However,

PDC: Linux Client can't join the domain.
Hi there. I've a problem with using samba as Primary Domain Controller
with backend ldap. Version release (Samba 3.2.5, OpenLDAP 2.4.11) on
Debian Lenny.
When I try to join the domain with a Windows XP Pro Client, all works
fine...profiles updating, logon, ecc..but when I try to join the domain
with a Linux Client (Slackware 12.1) I get different errors:

machine group and pwdump.exe
Hi,
1. I want to migrate NT to Samba 3 domain without needing to rejoin all machine (using same domain name and SID). just curious, machine account should belong to what group sid? does it matter if belong to any value?
2. I just examine output of pwdump, some of member domain or even NT BDC is has "*****" in password field which means this account was disabled.
I've verified that

server change
Hi,
Recently we changed our samba server to a bigger and more powerful system ( centos 5.2 )
The config file and smbpasswd and other passwd and group files were copied to the new server and it then assumed the same identity as the old one in the dns and ip address.
It seems to have gone very well except we now seem to have a problem.
There are windows XP workstations that were domain joined to the
