NT4 Machine Accounts/passwords expiring
Hi List, During a recent power outage my domain controller froze at the bios screen. So for all intents and purposes there was no PDC (nor BDC) for the domain. When I arrived on scene I restored order and rebooted the PDC,most machines were not affected, however several NT4 systems as well as my Samba Domain member servers (using domain security) all needed to be rejoined to the

Migrating from NT4 causes profiles not to load
I'm migrating from an NT4 Domain Controller to Samba 3.0.5 And it's mostly working. Users can log on but their desktop profiles don't load. On the NT Server there profile location was just left blank and people had their profiles locally saved. With the new samba server I want to leave it the same for now. The howto says >>A question often asked is: "How may I enforce

Strange Profiles Problem
This is a problem I've been experiencing lately after an upgrade from Samba 2.2.8 to Samba 3.0.23d. The problem seems to have to do with either the user's profile or the ntuser files in the profile. Normally what happens when a user logs in is that either the desktop.ini file's contents are displayed, or the user's program menu appears just like you had hit the Start button.

Successful migration NT4->SAMBA3 domain, anyone?
Hello, I have simple question. Has anyone succeeded to migrate NT4 domain with windows XP accounts to SAMBA3+LDAP domain? Our organization is very interested in doing this. We performed a test migration, users' accounts migrated without problems, but windows xp workstations can't login. I tried to find more information on this topic. What I found made me to think that such clean

xp profiles and samba 3.0
How can an xp machine on a samba domain rejoin the domain without having remote profile problems? When I do a windows logon to the domain after the pc has rejoined, my old profile is moved to profile.domain, and a new profile is then copied from the samba domain controller. Why? After that, some xp things don't pick up with the new profile.

More browsers!
I'm running CentOS 6 on one machine, plus my wife's. She's OK with it, but every time I use it, I miss the glorious plethora of browsers that Fedora has gotten me used to. I have epel and rpmfusion (both free and unfree) enabled; is there some other repo I can safely add? -- Beartooth Implacable, Curmudgeonly Codger Learning Linux On the Internet, you can never tell who

Moving from Fedora -- Advice??
I'm running Fedora14 on all machines, including my wife's -- and I'm the nearest (distant) thing there is to tech support. She's far more likely to outlive me than I her; so I want to install something requiring a lot less maintenance on her machine, so that she'll have it and be used to it, years ahead of need. I'm thinking CentOS 6, whenever it's ready, is

Samba slow on MacOSX Yosemite
Samba is very slow through Finder on our Gigabit network (she's using a USB3 adaptor), especially when it comes to listings and such on my wife's computer. This is my samba configuration on Archlinux: http://s.natalian.org/2016-05-14/smb.conf (I'm always running the latest https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/samba/) And this what the mount looks like on the MBP: //rufie

User permissions of profile/home directory lost
Hi All, I run a small domain for my home that consists just of two user accounts... one for my wife and one for me. I just have a single DC and the home and profile shares are located on the DC. For years this setup has served just fine giving me access to both linux and windows with a unified authentication and file server base. However, on Monday around 12 noon MST my wife lost permissions

Caution: "admin users" and roaming profiles
This is information that might be useful to others, as it drove me nuts until I could figure it out what I did incorrectly. I recently installed the 3.0beta and moved everything from 2.2.8a. I'm still in testing mode, so I rejoined the domain the the few test machines, and have been deleting and rebuilding test user profiles as I check things out. The problem I had occurred with the

usermod under CentOS
My wife's PC, running CentOS 6, suddenly quit connecting to the Net. Autodidact that I am, I fumbled with all the hard- and software I could find or dared try, but did no good. So we lugged it down to our favorite shop. While there, she bought a laptop, and asked them to install CentOS and copy all her files from the PC (including two books she's written and is trying to market).

NT4 roaming profiles not being saved completely
Hi :) I'm working with Samba 2.2.5 (Debian unstable) and have been trying to get roaming profiles working correctly. My test client is NT4 (SP5) which is able to log onto the domain correctly, however even if I do things like change the background colour, change registry entries, put stuff on the desktop, when I log off the account, only some of the profile is uploaded. I say 'some'

Issues with SAMBA 3.0.0/NT4/Roaming Profiles
Hi. When I turn on a NT4 box and log on a SAMBA 3.0.0 server, the roaming profile is correctly loaded. When I logout, the profile is also correctly saved back on the server. The problem begins when the next user (another user) logs in. Don't know who, but SAMBA or NT4 will load the last logged user profile. I.E.: i turn on a NT4 box, log in as 'daniel', log out, log in as
