Windows LocalSystem Account -> Linux Samba Server - What's the userID?
I have a Linux Samba server I access from a Win2K system. I want to allow a process started from a Windows "service" to access a share on the Samba server. The Windows service is set to run as "LocalSystem" instead of a specific userID. What userID do I need to define on the Samba server to allow "LocalSystem" to access files on a Samba share? -- Jim Garrison

restrict anonymous used wbinfo -A what next?
I am trying to get samba to work with winbind and still have the DC (w2k) use restrict anonymous. If I run wbinfo -A it will allow me to enumerate all the user accounts and groups but I still get prompted for a password when I try to access samba shares. I can turn off restrict anonymous and I can access the samba box all day with no problem but as soon as I turn on restrict anonymous it breaks.

Users unable to change their passwords using 200/XP change password dialouge.
I've just found out today that my system won't let users (2000 and XP clients) change their passwords. >From their consoles they get permission denied messages. Looking at the logs its clearly a Samba/PAM interaction issue but all looks OK in the pam.d directory. I've spent a few hours searching online but can't find anything that match's this scenario. Security warning with XP clients and 3.0.2a PDC
Hi all, I hope I don't make a prat of myself with my first posting... I've got a 'niggle' with Windows XP Pro (SP1a) clients and 3.0.2a PDC (Slackware 9.1, 2.4.22). Joing a domain, logging on etc is working perfectly but I'm getting a 'File Download' security warning when I try and open an executable that's stored on the server. If I agree to open the file it

XP logon to Samba in a AD Domain environment
I have been trying to get an XP machine to logon to a samba (2.2.4-3) installation for the past week. I am using local logons for the samba server and having it prompt me for a username and password (silly I know) when I access the samba box. I just kept getting a logon dialog box back with the "domain\username and the password" back. I searched for a solution and found the registry

XP logins
Hi all, today happened very strange thing to me. I'm running Samba 3.0.1 on Debian. Today users called me that machines with XP has problems to work on the network. I haven't changed configuration for 1 month... Users on XPs can logon into domain, but when they try, after logon, to open ANY share on Samba server, it locks up (explorer has no response] for about 5 minutes and after that

CIFS Session transfer
Hi All, I would like to know if this is possible and if possible what is the complexity. Consider a CIFS client, SAMBA Server1 and Samba Server2. Say a session is established between a CIFS client and SAMBA server1. Is it possible for the SAMBA server1 to transfer/redirect/reestablish the connection to SAMBA server2 without the CIFS client knowing about this? The session between the CIFS

Solution to XP/2000 joining Samba 2.2.x Domain Problem!
I finally found the solution that many people faced about joining a samba 2.2.x domain with XP or 2000 I've recently upgraded a Win98SE to WinXP, and attempt to join this to the Samba Domain (of ver 2.2.2), which already have 2 Win2000 as member. However, although the XP accept the Domain Joining, it denied me to log into the domain after a reboot, so I tried to view the System Event in the

'multi-layered' authentication
I need to allow [read] access to a Samba server using both IP filtering & UserIDs . For a given list of IP subnets, any user should have access. Outside these 'trusted' subnets, I need to do User authentication. I can handle the User authentication OK in several ways. However, I don't see any way to do the 'short circuit' allow for some IPs, then use User authentication

2.2.5, xp and incorrect logon drive as root
Hi @all, I set up 2.2.5 as PDC. With an XP-Client and log on as an simular user as root (I'm mapping "Administrator" to root in /etc/user.map) the logon home directory is the share "root". What is the reason for that? Is "root" a not usable name for a share? configure-options: ./configure \ --host=i486-pc-linux-gnu \ --target=i486-pc-linux-gnu \ --prefix=/usr \

Access to shares for authenticated domain users only
I am running several samba servers (2.2.3a and 2.2.7) in various places as pdcs. Everything seems to be running smoothly, but I can't find any way of restricting access to only those uses who have logged on to the domain. Is this possible? ie at the moment, any user can map a drive to \\server\share, put in a valid user/password pair and have access to that share without going through any

My PDC Conversion Project
I have 3.0.2a (with about 75 machines/users) installed as a PDC for my Win2k users and found an oddity. (waiting for a bin version of 3.0.3 for RH8.0) All was fine before I left 2.2.8.... But now when users hit <CTL>-<ALT>-<DEL> and change the password, they get "domain not available". When they log in, they get the logon scripts to execute, and anything else I do to
