Automating migration of files from windows to samba
Has anyone figured out a good automated way to migrate files from Windows Server to Samba Server without compromising file ownership and permissions? We could just log on as each user and then drag and drop using windows explorer to preserve the permissions and ownership rights but that is not a very efficient method. We are using Samba with winbindd against a windows 2000 Domain

permissions not transferred using robocopy, xxcopy, net share migrate shares
Hello: I've been working for a few days on getting a FreeBSD 5.3 server up and running as a samba data backup server. My goal is to schedule periodic backups of our file server. After reading recommendations (e.g. by Mr. Terpstra) I've focused my attempts aroung robocopy, xxcopy, net rpc share migrate shares. However, I'm running into stumbling blocks that seem to involve a problem

Rsync from windows to unix
Hi, I'm trying to use rsync from Windows to Unix. I've followed the directions on : http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html I can see ssh running on the windows machine, because I tested it using telnet localhost 22 and I can see the result "SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.4p1". But when I try "$ rsync -avz -e ssh user@windowsserver::/rsync/* ." from the Linux

Q: rsync, Windows, --backup-dir, parameters
Hi, I've seen a page on the internet : http://optics.ph.unimelb.edu.au/help/rsync/rsync_pc1.html Seems to me that I have some problems running the rsync binary with "--backup-dir=PATH" options. The command below runs just fine except for the option above. C:\rsync>rsync --delete -b --backup --backup-dir=/cygdrive/c/Doc/backup/Fri -ave ssh /cygd rive/c/Doc/backup/desktop/

rsync
Hola! I am now downloading r-devel to compile it on windows XP. The CRAN source code page says "you will prefere to use rsync". I am googling around, and cannot find anything about rsync on windows. Anybody has any experience with rsync on windows? Kjetil

[rsync-announce] Graphical rsync!
David Starks-Browning [starksb@ebi.ac.uk] writes: > Are you also distributing the source to cygwin1.dll? It is illegal > not to. Well, if it's an unmodified version, I expect a simple pointer to the Cygwin site and/or CVS tree would be sufficient. Physical distribution is not necessarily the only way to satisfy the GPL, and if the included cygwin1.dll is simply a binary downloaded

rsync bug recreating header.info
If this is not the correct place to post this I apologize. I am having a problem with rsync not setting the correct permissions on the rsync'd files. I have rsync 2.6.3 running on a Windows 2003 server using cygwin. I rsync the fedora core 2 updates to my server for internal use. The problem is after the rsync, the header.info file is no longer accessible to anyone and the other rsync'd

Can the rsync password be automated?
Is there a way to automate the rsync password or maybe disable? I am currently running rsync from a Windows command prompt and would like to run it from a .bat file. I have read through the config man pages but not sure if my ssh_config file is even being used. I tried passwordauthentication = no but it still asked for password. I have seen a option for --password-file= but I believe this does not

file corruption
Hi, I am backing up about 500G of data from a linux-based NAS to a USB hard drive attached to a router (rt-n16 with tomatousb firmware). Both NAS and the router have rsync-3.0.9. The router is running rsync in the daemon mode. To test the set up, I rsync'd the files to the empty USB hard drive, then back to the NAS in a new temp dir. Afterwards, I did a local "diff -r" on the NAS.

Preserve ACLs Changing Group. File Cannot Be Opened on Destination
When using the following to keep duplicate files on multiple computers, I find some files have their ACLs changed and cannot then be opened. I am using the following command. My goal is to be able to read/write/edit any local or remote file from any machine. Until recently this worked just fine, but now some files cannot be opened once rsync'd. rsync -avzh --progress --delete --super -A

Feature req: multiple source trees
Hi everybody, I want to share a feature request I wrote here some time ago. I'd like to give rsync more than 1 source-tree, where the "sum" (as described below) is rsync'd to the destination. suppose I have some machines, which have almost the same configuration, different only in small details. Then I want to rsync all machines from a master, with the details as specific to

rsync'd destination much larger than source
Hello. Recently, I started using rsync to backup files in my root partition on an Ensim box over to a remote machine. The remote machine 'pulls' from the Ensim box using the following: rsync -arvzx --exclude=/proc --exclude=/tmp --exclude=/mnt --delete --delete-excluded -e ssh 192.168.0.1:/ /bkup/rootpart/ The problem is, if I 'df' the Ensim box, it reports that the entire

I've settled on using "rsync -avHAX ..." and that seems to keep everything preserved. P.

is it a bug or a feature? re:time zone differences, laptops, and suggestion for a new option
It's much easier than that. The linux box keeps time in GMT, and displays it in the configured time zone. Try this, on the linux box: "touch testfile ls -l testfile TZ=EST5 export TZ ls -l testfile" You will see the displayed time change, because it's being translated from epoch time (that's what I call it, anyway) - seconds since midnight, January 1, 1970. ov_time_seek to 0s fails... AGAIN
Hello everybody, I sent something about this before, but this bug is still there, so... If you call ov_time_seek(vf, 0); it will fail, returning OV_EFAULT (from ov_pcm_seek_page). I think this must be a bug, because seeking to 0 seconds *should* be OK. Another thing, when ov_time_seek fails with OV_EFAULT, you cannot continue playing (because of the goto seek_error). This is not clear from

iPDF cluttering up file system
I have a customer using OS/X that creates thousands of PDFs per month using a tool called iPDF ART5. The server is Centos 5.x with samba-3.0.33-3.29.el5_5. Every PDF he creates also creates a hidden file with similar name. These files get rsync'd onto my server and my tape robot attempts to save them to tape but generates file not found errors. ._Skin Care : Cannot stat: No such file or
