Tyan K8SRE troubles with CentOS 4.4 i386
We have been seeing failures with CentOS 4.4 i386 (not x86_64) running
compute-intensive programs on Tyan K8SRE (S2891) Tymotherboards, running
Opteron 265's. This motherboard is used in the Tyan barebones box GT24
(B2881). We have these boards populated with 8GB of RAM, consisting of
mixed 2GB and 1GB sticks.
The symptom is that CPU-bound programs (may or may not be related to

boot slow at "Applying ip6tables firewall rules"
I have a fairly vanilla install of Centos5 on a desktop box (with a
Broadcom NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit NIC). When booting, the boot process
hangs at "Applying ip6tables firewall rules" for 30-60 seconds before
proceeding, which is annoying. I have not tried to turn off ipv6
networking. I guess I could, but is this slowness to be expected? Is it
waiting for some ipv6 response?

Strange behavior from grep
Hi,
It's been a long time since I've been noticing a strange behaviour
from CentOS grep command.
But today, I really need it.
I have a file that has the word gamito inside of it.
If I run
$ grep 'gamito' file
it returns nothing. Yet, if I run
$ grep -c 'gamito' file
It returns 1 which is right.
The mind boggles.
Does anyone ever had this problem or am I missing

cupsd takes 100% of cpu
I have never been able to get cups to work properly since CentOS 4.x
(and am now on 5.2).
When I try to "service start cups", cupsd immediately starts taking 100%
of the cpu. Attaching strace to it shows no system calls happening. I
have tried uninstalling and reinstalling cups to get fresh config files.
My printers.conf is empty.
This is on a completely updated x86_64 CentOS 5.2

pagecache corruption on Tyan S3870
A couple of months ago I reported some problems with a batch of Tyan
K8SSA (S3870) based machines. We are continuing to have an odd problem
with these boxes, and if anyone has seen something similar elsewhere,
I'd appreciate hearing about it.
These boxes are running Centos 4.4 x86_64 with kernel
2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp. They are dual Opteron 265's (dual core) with 4x2GB
DIMM's. The

information matrix test in r/s
Greetings, Fellow R-ians:
I'm working with a few different quasi-likelihood formulations for some data
I'm analyzing. I'd like to implement the Information Matrix Test (see,
e.g., White, 1982, or Lancaster, 1984) for each of them to determine which
of the models is more likely. Since the null distribution of the test
statistic is chi-squared, I envision calculating the ordinate of

cpuspeed causing hangs on warm boots
We are using CentOS-4.3 (x86_64) with Opteron servers, and noticed a
problem with cpuspeed:
If we reboot by doing "# reboot" or similar from a shell, the boot will
hang not long after cpuspeed starts. The machine freezes: ctrl-alt-del
doesn't work, and only pressing the reset button or a power cycle will
restart the machine.
If we reboot from power-up or by pressing the reset

How NOT to have a disk recognized by grub?
Greetings:
I'm upgrading a fileserver running 3.4 (upgrade to a larger disk). I
backed up the data from the "old" disk and slapped in a newer, larger
disk and installed Centos-3.4. No problems.
Now, there are some files on the "old" disk that I forgot to move to the
back-up disk, so I'd like to mount the "old" disk as /dev/hdd and reboot
the system and

Getting confirmation for power button
Using CentOS 5.8:
Currently on my workstations, when I press the power button the computer
immediately does a 'shutdown -h now' (per /etc/acpid/events/power.conf).
Is there a way to change it so that a confirmation dialog comes up, rather
than an immediate shutdown?
I assume that I am going to need to change that power.conf file to tell
some program that the power button's been

Power Fail Protection Update
Many thanks to those that responded to my original posting with
information about Network UPS Tools and commercial UPS products.
In our planning a path forward to implement UPS-based power fail
protection, we have come across what appears to be an issue with
the state of the CentOS 6 machines being UPS protected.? Most of
these machines are desktop/deskside machines that are likely to
be idle

elpa-ess fails to initialize after update to 18.10 on ubuntu bionic
The latest ess and elpa-ess 18.10-1bionic0 packages for ubuntu leave
ess unable to find initialization files when it is invoked from R via
M-x R. I've found a workaround by creating a soft link:
cd /usr/share
sudo ln -s /usr/share/emacs/site-lisp/elpa-src/ess-18.10 ess
but this may be a widespread problem. It appeared on each of the three
computers on which I updated the packages, and

Hinting
Of the people in here that have hinting working with the polycom 601's (or
any phone for that matter)... do you have it working so that the shared
line appearance shows that there's someone on the phone? If so, any hints
on how to do it?

ext3/2.2.19 vs. ext3/2.4.14
Hi,
I am starting to do some benchmarks using mongo (www.namesys.com), and I
am surprised by the big difference between ext3/2.2.19 and ext3/2.4.14.
Sometimes the latter performs 3 or 4 times faster. Someone has similar
results or is there something wrong in my test ? Attached is the
benchmark.
By the way, during the test, I got the message

ext3 on 2.4.10-ac11 w/ext3-2.4-0.9.12-2410ac11
I am trying to compile 2.4.10-ac11 w/ the ext3-2.4-0.9.12-2410ac11
patch. I'm getting unresolved symbols w/ ext3 module:
cd /lib/modules/2.4.10-ac11; \

2.2.19+ext3 or 2.4.1x+ext3 ?
I've not been happy with the stories about the "stable" 2.4.x kernels.
Everywhere I read people saying "not for production use".
Would you recommend adding ext3 to 2.2.19 (ext3-0.0.7a) or moving to
2.4.1x and using ext3 there (ext3-0.9.12)?

ext3 0.9.6 vs ext3 0.9.9
Hello,
I have done extensive testing between 2.4.9 and 2.4.9-ac12 with ext3
0.9.6 and 0.9.9. I also tried using both kgcc and gcc-2.96.
I have a problem with logging into xdm or starting the gnome-session
totally locking up the machine while using ext3 0.9.9.
It seems to go away using ext3-0.9.6. During xdm/gnome-session the hard
disk is under heavy activity. I have attached my
kernel config.
