Hi.
Stefan, thanks for your ongoing support. I believe your mothertongue
is German as well but I will go on writing in English so everybody
can participate
In meantime I found in several other newsgroups that I'm not the only
one, but I did not find a solution)

rsync + tar archive performance
Hi,
I have issue with taring speed on the directory created over rsync.
I'm putting directory on a system using rsync (rsync -rv) then tarred it
then puting the same directory on the server again using cp (cp -r) and
tarred it.
There is a result of my test http://pastebin.com/JsrVZps0 - looks like
tar working two times slower on directory copied by rsync.
- m4cp and m4sync contain same

help with Samba and WinXp Pro
Hi,
I just installed Redhat 7.2 with samba-2.2.1a on a linux machine. I
connected the linux machine to
a wireless router, which is connected to a hub. I run WinXP Pro PC which
is connected to the same
hub. There is no problem for me to connect to the samba server from
machines attached to the wireless
router, ( one Mac OS X & one Win98), but I can't connect to the samba
server from the

Help request setting w2000 to use Lexmark z25 printer on linux RH7.3 running samba.
Hi,
I am a newbie on samba. I use a vmware version which is slightly
modified but I hope this group can still help. On the Linux machine I
have set a Lexmark printer using Lexmark driver. This works fine but the
way it works is that the filter does the actual connection to the
printer (which uses USB port) whereas the lp directive is set to
lp=/dev/null. (in case this piece of information is

smbldap: odd ownership of un-tarred files
I've just been setting up a new server with RHEL 3, samba 3 with LDAP
authentication and using the smbldap-tools ver. 0.8.4. I've finally got
things working, but just noticed something odd.
I have so far only created myself as a user, with uid=1000 and gid=513.
As root, I obtained the latest gzip file for squirrelmail and untar'd
it. The odd thing is that the directory created

Create time changing by itself?
Are there some known problems related to ctime changing by itself? I
didn't find anything with google at least. tar seems to be complaining
about it all the time:
[cras@hurina] ~% tar cf test.tar /mnt/cygwin/home
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
tar: /mnt/cygwin/home/Timo Sirainen/xxx/xxxxx.xxx: file changed as we read it
This happens with my Debian/unstable (samba

export R data as web service
I'd like to access data in my R session from elsewhere via HTTP. My
particular use case would be R on Linux, accessing data from Windows,
all on the same intranet.
Naively, when I say this, I imagine something like:

> startHttpServer(port=8675)
(blocks until I C-c it)

Still trying to backup 66 GB from LINUX to W2K ***
Hi Everyone.
I'm still having that problem that my samba cannot backup more
than 2 GB onto a Windows share (on a Win2K box) (see messages
earlier in this forum - I have to backup a 66 GB file out of database).
Setting loglevel of SAMBA to "2" I received the following (for the
time running the backup up to the broken connection):

Character translation problem
Hi all,
I have a file that samba does not know how to access. The file is located on
a w2k server. The samba box is a member of the w2k domain (ADS). When I try
to access the file via nfs I get "no such file or directory". In the logs
I get the following error:

Samba 3.0.0.-2 logon script not running!
Help
..
I've struggled with this for a few weeks and can't get anywhere. I'd like for someone to point me in the right
direction, if possible.
I have laid out below my complete samba setting in the hope that
1) Someone can find a solution to my current problem
2) It might help someone else, as I overcame a few problems with these settings myself, under samba 2.2.8a.. please note

using samba and smbfs as a replacement for nfs ?
Hello,
i have searched the archives, but alas i did not find very mutch
information on this subject.
I read that smbfs always opens a file read/write. Will the Samba Server
at the other end lock the file so that no other user can access it ?
I have a few Application Servers, and i want them to store all there
information on one central data server. One way is using nfs, but as i

FINDNEXT problem, w2k and linux smbfs
I have inconsistent directory listing on share mounted on linux from windows 2k.
Some time not all files appear in the directory listing.
If reading directory listing multiple times (60-200 times) files listed originally would have one or two files missing in one of consecutive lists. The same problem appear as well if you are making backup of Windows files from multiple directories, there are

Simply Accounting on Samba 2.2.5
Hello,
I have recently migrated my Win NT4 server to Linux with Samba 2.2.5 :-)
One of the applications we need to run is Simply Accounting 9.0 / 2003 in
multi-user mode. The company that makes Simply Accounting sais the data
must be shared from Win NT,2000 or XP but sharing it through Win 95,98 or
Samba could corrupt it. I know that Simply Accounting stores the data in
.SDB database file

Configuring Samba with NIS
Hey all.
I have a bunch of linux servers, all using NIS to maintain username/password/UID/GID information. I'm trying to make the filesystems browsable from Windows XP, while maintaining correct UID/GID info. It seems this would be really simple, just let the user login to \\linuxmachine with his/her linux username & password, and everything they do happens as them. As you know - no

File size limit?
Hi all,
We have a Debian Linux 3.0, running kernel 2.4.18, and all filesystems are formatted as ext3.
My problem is: when I try to mount an w2k share in this machine using smbmount, I can't see big files correctly. I suspect that the problem happens with files bigger then 2GB. I have a file in the w2k machine that's 4GB size, and when I mount the share in the linux machine, I see that

need assistance migrating between apple servers
I am attempting to move imap folders from an Apple Snow Leopard server
to a new Apple Mavericks server. Dovecot --version is not working , but
I believe the old server is running dovecot 1.1.2 and can confirm the
new one is running 2.2.x.
I have tried taring and moving folders, but have not been able to get
the transfered messages and folders to show up in user accounts (new
