CentOS 6.4 installation fails with message "No usable disks have been found"
Hi folks,
I inherited a very old computer (I guess about 8 years old) which I'd
like to use for some training on CentOS. I downloaded images for CentOS
6.4 i386 (DVD 1 and 2) and burned them onto discs. After inserting DVD 1
into drive and booting, on the "Welcome to CentOS 6.4!" screen I select
"Install or upgrade an existing system". I then skip the media test and

CentOS 5 + Nforce 4 SLI Intel SATA problems
I've been having an extremely hard time using the on board SATA
controller on my nvidia based board. I have two 160gig Maxtor SATA
drives attached to the on board controller, setup as software raid0. The
problem is the array is extremely unreliable, where I'm getting constant
I/O errors like:
sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x00040000
end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector

How Many Calls On This Config
We have a test server that runs a single PIII 500MHz(256MB RAM) under
Slackware, and we can get 12 SIP -> Zap calls running on it just fine. Over
that and we have seen intermittant errors like call quality and very high
load spikes. You should be able to get at least 24 SIP -> Zap on that setup.
Post on the list when you do max it out. It's always good to see capacity
specs.

OT: SMART warning on hard drive, same warning for 2 1 /2 years
My wife's box has a very intermittent problem, when booting from the
Maxtor IDE hard drive. This has been going on for about 2 1/2
years.... The box is a Compaq EVO D300v for the Enterprise. When it
boots, there is a SMART advisory from the BIOS that says failure is
immenient. Occasionally, it will not boot, because the BIOS does not
see the hard drive. I replaced the EIDE cable, but the

SATA controller compatibility
Greetings - I'm looking to put some cheap storage into my server, which
is running centos 3. I'm looking at the Maxtor SATA/150 PCI Card and a
big maxtor sata drive. I would like to make sure that CentOS has
driver for this controller. I looked in Red Hat's hardware database
and did some google'ing but I couldn't find any info to confirm that
this card is compatible.

SMBMOUNT Performance between RedHat and SuSE
Hi All,
I've got a machine that is acting as my backup server which I call
"Valykyrie". Up until this weekend, this machine was running RedHat 7.3 and
Samba 2.2.5. Because of some "political issues", I was forced to rebuild
the machine with SuSE 8.1 Professional and Samba 2.2.5.
Since the time of the machine coming online with SuSE on Sunday afternoon,
my backup process

Hard Drive Errors
Heya,
First post to this list. have to say from what I have read in the passed
couple months. damn you people are knowledgeable in this stuff!
Anyways, I just setup a centos box for my personal little server at home.
Basically just a small personal, non-corporate server that runs a webserver,
DNS server, MySQL, and recently I installed webmin.
The other night I took a peak through webmin

Raid with one disk?
Is it possible to set up a single disk raid (kind of redundant to call a
single disk an array) but I've got a single SATA drive in the machine
not doing anything. It's a 10k maxtor 74G drive, and what I really want
is just to backup two home partitions. I can always reinstall the OS,
but the data can't be recovered that easily. The mobo supports raid-0,1
and jbod. Suggestions?

DMA related disc issues
Howdy. I apologize for vagueness of this report but I am not immediately sure
how to proceed with this or what details will be relevant.
I look after a community server which has been running just fine for the last
6 months or so with no disk issues at all. The box has an all in one Shuttle
motherboard which uses the VIA 8233 ATA133 disk controller according to what
I see from dmesg. The

Slightly OT: Anyone got a PXE bootable HDD low level format tool?
Slightly off topic, but does anyone have a utility for low level
formating Maxtor ATA hard disks that can be booted from PXELinux (either
as some kind of binary or as a floppy image)?
I just went to get the official tools, but they only have a floppy
creator (which won't help me in Linux, or without a floppy drive) and a
CD ISO. And it seems 99% of 3rd party software is unhelpfully the

slow usb hard disk performance.
Dear All,
I tried a USB2 Maxtor One touch II external hard disk on a couple of my
Centos 4.2 boxes and found it initiallised the SCSI subsystem ok and
added device "sda". But the performance is miserable, yet the same
hardware running XP the performance is satisfactory.
HDPARM gives results varying from 120k/sec to , at its peak 4.75M/s on a
USB 2 machine, still very poor by any

CentOS 4.3 occasionally locking up accessing IDE drive
For those who haven't seen my several previous postings about problems
with this (now not quite so) new PC, I have an ASUS P5N32-SLI Deluxe
motherboard. The boot drive and primary filesystems are on an SATA
disk and I'm having no problem with that. However, I recently plugged
in a couple of IDE drives salvaged from my old PCs and I'm running
into trouble with one of those.

Maxtor NAS share problem
I have a network accessible (192.168.2.97) Maxtor Shared Storage drive
that I want to use to backup the Linux (Slackware) systems on my private
LAN. I can "smbmount" the drive okay on my Linux systems, but when I try
and use rsync to do a backup rsync fails with a message about failing to
change owner.
Digging a little deeper into the problem I find that the
