Errors in /var/log/messages and "dmesg"
A friend of mine is running Samba (samba-2.0.3-8) on a couple RedHat Linux
6.0 machines. He is sharing files bilaterally at work with a WinNT
machine and at home with a Win9x machine.
In both places, he is getting a large number of SMB error messages. I'm
not sure whether these are from the smbfs (smbmount) or from the Windoze
machines accessing the Linux drives, though I suspect the

"conversion error" and NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE
Hi list,
sorry in case I do ask a FAQ, but I did in fact find some more mentions
of a problem like this, but always without a solution.
I upgraded our Samba server today (from 2.10/SuSE to 3.0x/Debian) and
have problems with some of the clients (Windows XP). When trying to
access a share from these clients, I get a NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE, and
increasing the log level reveals several occurences

PDC LDAP- user can't log in
Hello,
I'm trying to configure a Debian woody with samba 3.0.5 and ldap from
www.backports.org. I managed to get to the point where I created a user
with
smbldap-adduser -m -a
smbldap-passwd
smbpasswd
I can log into the server with this user and smbclient
//server/user -Uuser%pass works as expected.
The WinXP is able to join the domain and the machine account gets created in ldap.
But I

name_query failed: Samba 2.0.3
I'm stumped on getting Samba to work again on our small network. I've
got one Windows 95 machine that started to refuse to talk to Samba last
week. I *was* running one of the 1.9.18 releases, but when it stopped
working, I figured I would delete the old release and do a clean
install of 2.0.3. I've done that, and used SWAT to configure the
smb.conf file (which can be seen below).

kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid
While using smbmounted shares I get the following errors in my syslog:
---<snip>--
Nov 27 18:27:45 cayman kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid
Nov 27 18:27:46 cayman kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=529, generation=2
--</snip>--
Is this something I should worry about?
I am using RH 6.2, linux 2.4.16 and samba-2.0.10-0.62 installed from RPM.

smb_request error
Hi,
I am running samba 3.0.4 on my fedora box and I have been noticing a
message like this showing up in /var/log/messages every hour, on the
hour.
May 16 10:01:00 box kernel: smb_request: result -104, setting invalid
May 16 10:01:00 box kernel: smb_retry: successful, new pid=21347,

I assume that this message is being caused somehow by a cron job
(diskcheck) that is going through

About smbfs: smb_get_length error
Hi All:
When I use samfs, sometimes I got the following messages, Mr. Google says
this is because the windows client use the share, and the connection
is "reconnected"! Does it right?
How to ward off the error? Is there any potential problem if I ignore it?
My actions are smbmount and smbumount some shares. Sometimes some shares are
smbumount before they mounted (thus cause a

Smbfs problems after upgrading from Woody to Sarge
I earlier this week upgraded from Debian woody to sarge on a machine that
does a nightly backup to another machine via a samba share. Since then I
have had some issues with accessing that share with I believe are a result
of the upgrade. I upgraded the kernel at the same time to 2.4.27-1-686 #1
via apt-get, which might be the related to the problem. Smbfs is version

Problem on mount.smbfs
Dear Samba Support,
Currently I'm using redhat 6.2 with kernel version 2.2.14-5.0
and samba server version : samba-2.0.6-9
I have configured our samba server as member of NT domain.
Everything works well, ie: I can join to PDC server and also mount our file
server into our samba server
But everyday in our samba server on file /var/log/messages, I got messages:

Interesting errors...
Greetings,
About 2 months ago, we decided to backup our Oracle test servers via
samba rather than nfs -- the backups were just taking too long using
nfs. No problem mounting the remote file share to the server and the
backup took about one-third of the time. Yep, worked good...and still
continues to out perform nfs hands down.
Problem is - I'm receiving errors on both of the test servers.

Password trouble with LDAP (eDirectory)
Hi All,
I have a strange problem with passwords, stored in LDAP.
When i try to logon as a user with the correct password, access is
denied and the log says
check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [administrator] ->
[administrator] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER
When i try to logon a user with incorrect password, access is (of
course) denied, but the log now says

Winbind problem - 3.0.20a and NT4 domain
All -
We are using 3.0.20a on SLES 9 and are trying to configure a member server
for our NT4 domain. The wbinfo commands (-u and -g) show correct
information. The getent commands (passwd and group) work fine also. If
Samba is running without winbind, I can see the shares in the config file
(net view \\xxxxxxxx) from a PC. With winbind running I get an error
message about the computer name
