Printers Always Paused - A Solution
I had a problem with Samba 2.2.5 with the printers being permanantly paused to Windows machines. They could print OK - it was only the status that was wrong. The reason for this was because I had used the word office in the printer name / comment. This was causing the parser which recognises the printer status to find 'off' pausing the printer. A quick fix for this is to replace the

Custom smbprint script for testing
Hello there, I've produced a modified version of the smbprint script that comes with the samba source. The script is aimed to retry sending the print job if the windows machine is switched off at the time of printing (samba seems to just drop the print job after a period of time if the machine is off). This script will mail you to tell you the machine isn't turned on yet and if you

Oplocks, Oplock_break and request Oplock_break
Hello there. I'm having a few problems using samba 2.2.3a and sharing a paradox database. On the whole everything works fine but (there's always a but), every now and again. a machine's shares will close causing the database to crash (sometimes only that machine) - the other networked machine recover after a few error messages. I guess the easy answer would be to disable oplocks

XP clients & inexplicable pauses
Hi folks, I recently upgraded two client/server pairs to WinXP and Samba 2.2.6 (on Linux). Browsing mounted shares causes hangs when right-clicking or double-clicking/ launching files -- about 15 seconds. During this, precious little network activity is occuring. Something is hanging, locking, sleeping. Appreciate any advice. Hope it's a simple fix. If not, I'd appreciate advice on

APW: Print Driver not Storing for some printer types
Hi there. I'm using samba 3.0.2 as a printserver. It's been working for ages and I upgraded it the other day to see if it fixed this problem I've been having trying to get printer drivers stored onto the server. The mechanism for uploading drivers seems to be working fine but I've recently got two new printers: an HP laserjet4200tn & and OKI c5100. No matter what I seem to

splitting strings effriciently
Folks, I have a data frame with 4861469 rows that contains an ip address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx as one of the columns. I want to assign a site to each row based on IP ranges. To do this I have a function to split the ip address as character into class A,B,C and D components. It works but is horribly inefficient in terms of speed. I can't quite see how one of the l/s/m/t/apply functions could be

survival analysis
Has anybody written an actuarial (life) survival procedure, this does not appear to be an option in the survival package? This approach is common in orthopaedic surgery to demonstrate the survival of prostheses. I need to apply the "modified" lower conf.int because of the censoring over time. I want a life table which I can then easily plot. Many thanks

Plotting 3d surfaces
Dear Subscribers, I am using R for quite a while nowadays on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I a using R for doing my statistics. Furthermore I am using it as a tool to generate the graphics for my publications. I am currently working on a project which involves nls-fits of three dimensional surfaces such as ellipsoids or even more complex. I have been searching R help and the manuals for a possibility to

How to move/reorganise existing e-mails to yearly subfolders
What is the problem with having huge online mailboxes? Just choose a good european provider that has encryption all the way through to their storage platform. I had exactly the same idea about migrating. You have to think twice about moving emails around of users. They do not like it ;) I have created an 'archive' environment on a distributed filesystem, and it takes me quite a lot

How to move/reorganise existing e-mails to yearly subfolders
Hi all: I am new to e-mail servers and I am evaluating Dovecot. Not really the best combination. 8-) I am trying to find a balance between legal data retention requirements and online mailbox size. I do not want huge online mailboxes, as doing offline, rotating data backups could then take forever (among other reasons). I would rather avoid online (cloud) backups (data protection etc.). If I

DHCP failover ... Some questions.
Hi, I plan to reorganise our IP management and I'd like to implement a slave DHCP server. Right now we assign IP addresses based on the ethernetadress of a client 1:1. The tutorial here [1] is simple and looks like the thing I need. I do have a lot of subnetworks and my cisco router has an DHCP helper address set. I know I'll have to add the second dhcp-server address. My questions now

Renamed files and directories
What is the current status of both rename-patches ? Are there alternative measures ? Frequently users reorganise directories and files. Recently a directory of 40GB was renamed... It took 3 weeks to re-copy all over an ADSL-link. I have followed the last couple of years the postings, and realise it is not as easy as it seems. But the users do not understand this at all 8-( Thanks, Nico
