log files - slackware
Does anyone use slackware with samba? And if so, are they able to produce 'log.nmbd' files? I can't. But I can do this just fine with RH8.0. By the way - my version of Slackware is 8.1 -- T.L.Gervais Coldbrook, NS Canada.

Port Forwarding
Is ''port forwarding'' a relatively new thing with packet filtering? Or has it always been available since iptables appeared on the scene. --- Ted Gervais Coldbrook Nova Scotia Canada B4R1A7

Re: Exchange Server in DMZ (i-hacked.com)
Hiya, My two cents here .. I use a locked down Linux Sendmail relay (use sendmail null-client feature on any spare old server or PC) in my DMZ to relay Mail to the exchange server in my local zone. Its sort of the moat you have to cross over to get at the castle walls and the hot oil dumped on your head approach. Francesca C. Smith Lady Linux Internet Services 1801 Bolton Street # 1 Baltimore,

The use of Samba
Now that I have Samba all set up and working well with all the machines I have - some linux, some Win98, some WinXP , what more can I do with Samba than just allow access to each of these machines. Right now I can sit at any machine and access any others. I can move files around I can play music files from any machine and I can print on any Printer that is in the network. What more can I

autoLogin
I just installed Centos (version 4.4) and wondering how I can change things so I don't have to login. I am aware of the security implications for doing this but I would prefer this if I can do it. I believe it has something to do with autologin and if so how is this configured ?? --- Ted Gervais, Coldbrook, Nova Scotia, Canada

MASQ views
Wondering about being able to see MASQ activities with IPTABLES. With IPCHAINS I used -M -L to make this possible. Nothing like that with iptables, at least as far as I can see. Any thoughts on that fellows.. --- Ted Gervais Coldbrook Nova Scotia Canada B4R1A7

Unknown commments in shorewall status.
I wonder if someone can tell me what these ''unknown'' remarks mean in my status file. They are only in the last portion of the file and are listed below. If they mean nothing, I will rest easy. But if not it means I need to fix something. Your thoughts would be appreciated. ---------------- udp 17 92 src=24.224.173.220 dst=24.222.0.75 sport=1027 dport=53 src=24.222.0.75

samba and passwords
I got a problem. Samba is in place and working on my linux machine but when I try and use Windows to map a drive it asks for a password and doesn't know the one I enter. How can I enter a new one, or find the one I currently have in place? --- Ted Gervais 1-902-679-2253 Coldbrook, Nova Scotia Canada.

ptyxx ports
With the 2.6 kernels we have lost the ability to use ptyxx and ttyxx for the installation of various ports. I am thinking of attaching a modem etc to an axip or other similar port and for that I always used ptyxx/ttyxx to do this. How is this done with the 2.6 kernels? -- Ted Gervais 2381 Loretta Ave., Coldbrook Nova Scotia Canada b4r 1a7

'network neighbourhood'..
Hi.. I am finally making some progress with Samba. Its been a while but finally I see the light. I have a question. First of all, here is where I am at. I can use smbclient and access all the shares on my Windows machine. And I can map all the drives that are shared on my linux machine. In other words everything is working between my two machines. Now, here is the problem. In 'network

Shorewall Setup.
Hello Tom and others on the list. Tom - you might recall that the other day (night) I had problems with my axip setup (protocol 93) and we made some changes to the policy, zones and interfaces files. You added ''peers and tunl+'' Following that change nothing seemed to work. In fact you wanted to see the shorewall status file, among other things. Well - tonight, I carefully put

Can't see all of the directories in a share with 2.2.7a-1 & RH8...but older version/kernel can
Hi all, Hoping someone might be able to steer me in the right direction and/or help me solve my problem. We have a number of Linux servers (RH6.2 -> RH8) which connect to the same share on a Win2000 Server. We've been working kinda hard to get everything upgraded to either RH7.3 or RH8.0 since we rarely get the opportunity. 2 similar servers (one dev, one prod) access this same window

rsync 2.6.0 causing incredible load on Linux 2.4.x?
Hi everyone. Has anyone experienced rsync 2.6.0 causing huge amounts of system load? Especially on Linux 2.4? We recently upgraded our "push" machine to rsync 2.6.0 and the next push that went out (rsyncing about 3GB of data to 15 servers sequentially over gigabit ethernet) caused the box to hit 110.59. We only know the load because snmpd was still working, but nothing else in userspace

mapping usernames between Windows and Linux
My username is different on my Linux box than on my Windows box so I used the line username map = /etc/samba/smbusers in my smb.conf file and this file includes the line steve = steveb However when I'm logged on to my Linux box as 'steve' and use the smbclient command like this: # smbclient //<Windows computer>/Shared ... session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE it

Versions of PCRE, documenting what grep etc do.
A couple of weeks back there was some discussion about documenting the regular expressions as used in R. Several years ago the problem was that this was OS-dependent, and to plug that problem we incorporated regexp code from a version of GNU grep, later updated to grep-2.4.2 in R 1.2.0. I have been looking at documenting what grep(perl=TRUE) does, and we have a similar problem in that the
