2GB of Waste? How can it be?
Dr. Tweedie, et al.: I recently formatted a partition using EXT3, and after a "df -h" I get 14GB of space. When I reformatted the partition with ReiserFS, and did a "df -h" I got 16GB of space! Now the partition was setup to be 16GB via fdisk, so 16GB is correct. However, why does EXT3 loose 2GB of space? The journals cannot be that big!?! Very Respectfully, Stuart

kernel panic with ext3 and cbq
Hello, I'm usign Kernel 2.2.19 with ext3 0.0.7b patches. I'm also using cbq to control bandwidth. The cbq is correctly creating the classes and queueing disciplines but, whenever I call cbq stop I get a kernel panic: > Aiee, killing interrupt handler > Kernel panic: Attempted to kill idle task! > In interrupt handler - not syncing The exact line in cbq script that is

Smp kernel on up machine???
Can anyone tell me if there has been testing of using an SMP kernel on a UP machine and if that is bad? I have an ext3 filesystem that keeps getting corrupt. Certain directories only get I/O errors, trying to access beyond the end of the device. Thanks, Gabe

ext3fs for 2.4.5
Hi, I have ext3 installed against the 2.2.19 kernel. I am able to make the ext3 file system and mount it. I am not able to install the ext3fs for kernel-2.4.5 . I am unable to add the ext3 patch to the kernel. In the directory ~andrewm/linux/ext3/, which is the patch for 2.4.5 kernel. ( I can only see the patches for 2.4.6 and 2.4.7 ). Also, is there any prescribed pattern for

inode limit ?
Hello, I'm using a defualt everything install of 7.2 (kernel 2.4.7-10 #1) with a 27 gig ext3 / partition. The problem that I am experiencing is this: If I create more than (about) 3.5 million distinct files on the partition, touch, mkdir, cp and all other file creation methods complain that there is no available space on the disk. A df shows me that the partition is only 65% full.

box standard kernel 2.2.x failes to mount cleanly unmounted ext3 partition
Hi Everyone! Just to let you know, I am very happy ext3 made it thorugh to linux kernel 2.4.15 We have installed ext3 on several machines here at jtrix.org (including two laptops) and everything seems to be working fine. Our only concern is for our two public servers. They run linux 2.2.19 for stability reasons. On one of the laptops (dual booting 2.2.19 and 2.4.14) kernel 2.2.19 failed to

ext3-0.0.6b available
Hi all, ext3-0.0.6b is now available at the usual places: ftp.*.kernel.org:/pub/linux/kernel/people/sct/ext3/ and ftp.uk.linux.org:/pub/linux/sct/fs/jfs/ The only significant change in this release is the fix to the orphan list recovery, and that fix also affects e2fsprogs, so please pick up the new e2fsprogs from the same directory when you grab the ext3 release. I've put tarballs,

2.4.13 kernel on Redhat 7.2
I have tried everything to compile a new kernel on my 7.2 base system. I have used 2.4.13-ac6 and 2.4.13 w/ ext3 patch. I have compiled with ext3 built-in and with ext3 as module (with the initrd). I have a SCSI system so I have done the previous variations with both SCSI support built-in and modular (with the initrd). The error I get is: Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode: mount: no

kernel panic on ext3
Hello, Sir. My name is Hiroyuki Kudo. I have a problem using ext3 in my system DELL PowerEdge 1550. I recently installed RedHat 7.2 (kernel-2.4.7-2) and found that it used ext3. Later, since I needed to use nfsv4, I got kernel-2.4.4-nfsv4. But it didn't start up and saying `kernel panic` What is wrong with it? If the problem can be cleared with ext3-patch, how can I do it?

A question about compiling the kernel with ext3 support
Hi, I am trying to compile the kernel with ext3 support and i downloaded the 2.4.13 kernel and patched it for RH 7.2 to update from the 2.4.7 precompiled ext3fs kernel. Then i selected ext3 support and and the JBD debugging support under 'make xconfig.' Then i ran the following commands make clean make dep make bzImage make modules make modules_install cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage

Kernel Ooops probably in conjunction with lvm
Hello, I've got a rather strange setup over here with about 6 ext3 partitions, one 50gig lvm partition and one 2 gig software-raid1 partition running under a heavily patched 2.4.10 kernel (various netfilter patches, freeswan, current lvm patch (1.0.1-rc4 and current ext3 patch). Furthermore I have all of those neccessary filesystem tools, so don't tell me to upgrade :-) The machine was

can redhat kernel source be patched?
I desperately need the ability to quickly recover from a power loss so I am finally going to break down and spend some time with ext3. I dl'ed the ext3-0.0.6b.tar.gz and unzipped it in /usr/src. Then I installed kernel-source-2.2.19-6.2.1.i386.rpm from redhat I then treid to apply the patches: cat ../ext3-0.0.6b/linux-2.2.19pre14.kdb.diff | patch -sp1 cat

Is ext3 kernel nfsd friendly?
This is prompted by two issues: Neil Brown on the NFS list asking for file systems that users want to export via NFS and the problems that the other journaling filesystem reiserfs has with knfsd. As far as I understand reiserfs does not work with knfsd so a patch is needed for the fs driver to provide a callback to knfsd to allow the fs driver to do some clever tricks with inodes. Neil's
