Broadcom wireless card: installation script for Linux-STA driver
Hi, I just installed CentOS 6.6 on my HP Pavilion DM1 laptop. The wireless card is only poorly supported in the default setup, so I decided to write an installation script for the Linux-STA driver, which works perfectly. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos/blob/master/6.x/broadcom-sta/broadcom-sta.sh Grab the files: # git clone https://github.com/kikinovak/centos Run the script: # cd

Configuring an Intel 3945 wireless card: partial success
Hi, My wife has a new ASUS laptop with an Intel 3945 wireless card. I'm running CentOS 5 on all our desktops here (at work and at home), and I'm quite happy with it. I had a partial success in configuring the wireless card. Basically I'm using [base], [updates], [extra] and [rpmforge] repos, configured with the yum-priorities plugin. Priority 10 for RPMForge, 1 for the others.

Desktop freeze... now what?
Hi, I installed CentOS 5 on a client's machine yesterday afternoon. He phoned me in the evening to tell me that his desktop "froze several times upon him", and he had to hard-reboot it. The last time this happened to me was with some exotic wireless card whose driver had problems with SMP. But here, I have no wireless card. So the only suspect is the NVidia Geforce 4000 card.

Broadcom wireless card: installation script for Linux-STA driver
Did you try the drivers provided by elrepo? http://elrepo.org/tiki/wl-kmod On December 14, 2014 5:32:34 AM EST, Niki Kovacs <info at microlinux.fr> wrote: >Hi, > >I just installed CentOS 6.6 on my HP Pavilion DM1 laptop. Run a more recent kernel than 2.6.18 on CentOS?
Hi, Usually I'm not one to complain about "old" version of the CentOS kernel and/or software, since I appreciate CentOS' stability. So this might be the exception that confirms the rule. I've been jumping through several burning loops these past days to configure my little MSI Wind netbook, and I'm currently considering going for a more recent kernel. There's no

Problems setting up legacy NVidia card
Hi, Here's my video card: $ lspci | grep -i vga 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV15 [GeForce2 GTS/Pro] (rev a3) Until now, I've used it on Slackware (10.0, 10.2, 11.0) and Debian (Sarge, Etch), and I've always managed to set it up fine. First, I checked if there were any precompiled nvidia drivers in the various repos (rpmforge, ...), but there seemed to

CentOS 7 on Dell Inspiron with ATI Radeon HD 6320 video card
Hi, I'm currently installing CentOS 7 on a client's Dell Inspiron laptop. Here's the video card: # lspci | grep -i vga 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Wrestler [Radeon HD 6320] Most of the time, I either have to deal with Intel or NVidia graphic chipsets. As far as I understand, I can choose either the free 'radeon' driver or the

Network configuration question
Hi, My wife and I live in a two-storey flat, and we have a small home LAN (100% CentOS 5) with a "classical" configuration: On the ground floor, there is the telephone jack with the DSL modem router (192.168.1.254). This modem has a mini-switch with two Ethernet jacks to it, and the two are used by: - the server (192.168.1.1), a "black box" running in a cupboard 24/7 -

Changing hostname?
Hi, I recently made a CentOS install on a machine with an unsupported network card. I had to add the driver for it later, once I finished the install. For now I have this: [kikinovak at localhost ~]$ hostname --fqdn localhost.localdomain Q: how would I change this to something like calimero.local? Here's what I *would* do, but I prefer to ask before. 1) edit /etc/sysconfig/network and

Strange message at boot time
Hi, I'm usually booting all machines here with 'vga=788 quiet' options in menu.lst, so I see what services start, but it's not too verbose at the same time. One message that puzzles me is the very first one after GRUB starts init: "Memory for crash kernel (0x0 to 0x0) notwithin permissible range." Anyone knows what that means? Niki

Samba shares not appearing
Hi, I'm currently fiddling with Samba, trying to make it work on CentOS 7. Before that, I ran Samba successfully in a mixed environment with Slackware64 14.1 on the server and Slackware/Windows Seven on the client side. I have three sandbox machines running CentOS 7. One has a minimal install with only the samba and samba-client packages. Just to be on the safe side for fiddling,

Problem with Yum on CentOS 5.4
Hi, I recently downloaded and burned the 5.4 DVD ISO. All my machines are now running 5.4, but these are installs I performed with 5.0, 5.1, 5.2 etc. and then progressively upgraded. Now I had to use 5.4 because a friend's laptop, a brandnew Fujitsu Esprimo Mobile, refuses to boot anything under 5.4. After a fresh install of the base system, first thing I do is 'yum update' with

Flash plugin not working
Hi, I have a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, with a minimal GNOME desktop. I configured RPMForge as third party repo. I updated everything first, then installed flash-plugin. (And yes, I restarted Firefox... :oD). All I see when I try to see some things Flash on the Internet, like Youtube or the likes, I get... nothing. The space remains white. Sometimes a black square will appear, sometimes it

Problems with UserDir directive on CentOS 5
Hi, I'm currently setting up a local LAMP server to test various apps. Starting from the out-of-the-box configuration of Apache, I test it, and it's OK: http://localhost shows Apache's default page OK in Firefox. Now I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and replace 'UserDir disabled' by 'UserDir public_html'. I restart Apache. Then, as a normal user (kikinovak): $

Data corruption on external hard disk
Hi, I'm using CentOS 5 on all my computers here (work + home) and I'm very satisfied with it. Some time ago I purchased a 300 GB external hard drive to store films, music, pictures and documents. Since there's no Windows machine around here (small South French village, town hall and public library use Linux :o)), I replaced the FAT filesystem on the disk by an ext2 filesystem.

Hi again & problem with minimal CentOS and Github
Hi everybody, I'm back to CentOS after a long period during which I've been using mainly Slackware. I still use Slackware for teaching and for my local clients (on servers and desktops), but right now, I'm planning to update my own documentation about CentOS, which is still based on version 5.x. First things first. For the moment I have a sandbox server in my office with a

Roundcube does not show emails
Hi, I installed Roundcube 1.4.1 on a sandbox server running CentOS 7, Postfix and Dovecot, with half a dozen test email accounts. Mail is setup correctly under the hood, e. g. I can access any account via Thunderbird for sending and receiving mail. And SELinux is set to permissive until everything works correctly. I took some notes (in french) on the installation procedure under CentOS : *

SSH without password on CentOS 5 ?
Hi, I'd like to use SSH without password so I can use it in scripts (for example in combination with rsync to do backups). I have Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook" and I'm trying out the various receipts, but the one for SSH without a password doesn't work. The book is slightly dated, and I wonder if SSH included in CentOS works differently. Any suggestions? Niki
