Disappearing Shares?
I am new to Linux and running SuSE V8.0 with KDE desktop and
Samba 2.2.7 on a small bnetwor5k which also has a Windows NT
PC and a notebook.
On the Linux PC's I have used LinNeighborhood to mount the
various shares and can readily view files on the Linux PC's, or on
the windoze machines.
I have had a number of occasions where I have had to power down
my main Linux PC, and far more

Hardware advice please?
I am quite new to Linux and have moved (almost) from a windoze
NT4 environment.
My present configuration is running SuSE V 8.0 with KDE3.0.5
desktop on two machines, connecting with Samba to an NT4 PC,
and an occasional laptop or other PC that connects locally to the
network.
After a deal of searching, researching, and seeking advice I have
decided to use Shorewall as my firewall.

Samba domain users VS "rogue" NT servers.
Hi All,
We're having some problems using Samba and supposedly "standalone"
rogue NT servers on one of our network domains.
When an authenticated samba-served NT domain user on a client machine
tries to access a share on a non BDC/PDC NT server that it part of
the same samba domain, the standalone NT server sends it a message
saying "Your logon time at NTDOMAIN has

How to mount NT share & maintain NT share permission via SMB for LTSP user??
When a regular user (say, "jmc") logs onto my Linux (LTSP, Samba, DHCP)
server via his LTSP terminal I need an NT drive share to be mounted with
the permissions that NT intends.
Our NT file print server has a directory named "private" which contains
subdirectories for each user. Each user has NT read/write permissions to
his/her private subdir and no others. I need for each

Runaway nmbd Process - Help!
I am running SuSE V 8 with KDE 3 and had a memory problem when the
screen would lose icons, taskbars etc. I am very much a newbie and
everything was going along smoothly, even managed to get Cups up and
running and printing across the small Lan to a windows printer.
The problem is being caused by nmbd starting up in a loop causing
dozens of instances to run each with their own PID until such

password synchronization - smbpasswd for ordinary users
I have Samba 2.2.3a running on Tru64 Unix v4.0f (?)
I have Win NT4.0 (sp6a) as our local PC OS.
I have created a Samba password file for users.
I've tried several permutations, but currently I have
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
unix password sync = yes
username map = /../../../usermap.txt
I also have standard password encryption on the NT side, i.e. not plaintext.
If I sync

I tried to access windows shares by using
LinNeighborhood. I can see all host in windows
network in LinNeighborhood, but when I want to mount a
folder in a host, there came a message "Can't resolve
address". This happen for all host. I already set
the right WINS server and Primary master browser in
the preferences, use samba port 139. Why this happen?

If in [global] <guest ok = yes> why do I get an authe ntication sc reen when accessing from NT box?
To force guest access to a share, you need both
guest ok = yes
guest only = yes
Otherwise it will try and authenticate you first before
dropping you to guest. If this doesn't work, possibly
you don't have a valid guest account set. If no account
is set as the guest account (on the linux machine) it will
use the user "nobody".

Hi All,
I am unable to 'net rpc vampire' the NT4 user accounts and groups into an
ldapsam. The PDC is Windows NT4.0 sp6a and the ldapserver is SunONE DS 5.1 on
Solaris 9. I believe the sambaSamAccount schema has been imported successfully
(output below). Any help received is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Darren.

Samba 3 dms doesn't allow access through interdomain trust
Hello everyone!
I have a little problem:
HRH = trusted domain (Samba 3)
Hendricks = trusting domain (NT4 sp6a)
Trusts are setup between the NT4 and Samba3 + OpenLDAP domain and
appear to be working properly.
When logged into the HRH domain on a W2k workstation I can view, read,
and write on available
shares for HRH groups and users on our Windows file servers. Whenever

Printing problems with Samba 2.2.3a
Hi,
I've been using Samba 2.0.5 successfully for a long time and am now trying
to configure 2.2.3a under Debian GNU/Linux 3.0. I've succeeded with the
exception of one printer share. What makes this frustrating is that the
share is mostly functional, but I haven't been able to find my problem
described anywhere else.
We have two HP printers, a LaserJet 4000N and a LaserJet 5N,

Vista SP1, Server 2008 joining NT4/Samba Domain
Hello!
It seems, that Vista SP1 and Server 2008 cannot join an NT4/Samba-domain.
Vista once could join before SP1, if one did some modifications to the
system (LAN Manager authentication level, Encryption of secure channel).
But these workarounds do not seem to work with SP1 anymore.
Microsoft points out that joining NT4-domains with Vista SP1 and Server
2008 is not supported/tested

nobody is perfect!
Hi!
I have a strange problem that some, sometimes and randomly Windows
Clients connect to our Samba 2.0.7 Server (security=user; all users are
Samba and NIS users) as the guest account (user nobody).
This is not that strange, but the logfiles tell me:

Can't reach Samba shares from Win XP Pro
This seems to be common enough problem. I've used a variety of methods
(command line as well as utilities like LinNeighborhood) to mount XP
shares on my RedHat 8.0 running Samba 2.2.7. I get consistent problems
the other way around. Despite a couple of shares on my Linux partition,
I am just unable to do get to it. Network Neighborhood shows my
Linux/Samba server but no shares, nor can I
