NT PDC to Samba PDC migratio
I thought that it was quite impossible to do that due to the Domain SID as well as the SAM list that currently Samba is unable to retrieve. (Not that it would have helped me any, since our old NT 4.0 PDC took a major Hardware failure.) How would one duplicate the SID, is that possible with 'smbpasswd -S' from the new Samba DC? Not able to login to Samba P
I believe that your issue is related to UNIX permissions. The location of your profiles directory must be set to allow all users R/W to it. Create a new group in your group file and add every user to it. Then change the ownership of the profiles directory. Also make sure that all of your users have R/W permissions on that directory. New files and directories
Hello, I have an annoying little issue. I am currently running Samba 2.2.5-10 as a Primary Domain Controller and have a number of shared drives with a variety of differing users and user rights all over the place. In my smb.conf file, I have the following share: [emergpo] path = /share/purchasing/emergpo force directory mode = 0770 create mode = 0770

Locating the MACHINE.SID fil
Additional Info... I am beginning to think that a file called 'secrets.tdb' might be what I am looking for. Inside that file is something mentioning SID. Of course, it also mentions the name of the PDC. If that is the file I am supposed to copy over. Then it is done. However, I still need a little more input for setting up a Samba BDC. With a Samba BDC, should I leave the

Performance Increase Suggestions
Hello Everyone, I have a few users that are complaining about the "slowness" of copying files to and saving files directly to the Samba server. From my own recollections, the speed is rather identical to the speed we experienced on our old Windows NT 4.0 fileserver. One thing that could be the impetus of this issue is that Samba is serving up files, for opening and copying from the

Samba as BDC in NT domain
I have this problem: there is a subnet 192.168.6.0/24 and the gateway is 192.168.6.1 which has also another nic 172.21.13.123 which belongs to subnet 172.21.13.0 where the PDC of NT-domain is. GW does NAT and it causes that computers/users in subnet 192.168.6.0 cant logon to NT-domain. Is it possible to put Samba in GW machine so that it can be a backup domain controller in NT-domain and it uses

PDF Printer issue
Hello Everyone, I have a slight issue with configuring a PDF printer on my Samba servers. I have input the following into my smb.conf file and it does create the printer as well as work to create PDF files, except that it only functions when "printing" to that printer via Excel 2002. If I attempt it with anything else, even the Windows Test print, it fails. Now, in the Windows

Ext3fs/ReiserFS Performance Enhancing
Hello All, I have been doing some research to find a method to increase the performance of writes to the hard drives in my servers. I am running Samba and all writes to the server hard drives are taking at least 3 to 10 times (It varies) the amount of time it took to write such files on our older Windows NT 4.0 File Server. The following information is provided to keep this issue on track...

IMAP Limitations with Outlook 2013?
Good Day! I have a fairly new user on my network that has, over about 10 months, created in root inbox and nested sub-folders totaling over 900 individual folders. In the past few weeks, newly created folders will be visible in Outlook 2013, but when an email is moved into that folder, it is no longer visible. I can ssh into the server, drill down to that

Samba as PDC for WinXP, Win9
Simon, What version of Windows XP are you using? If your client has purchased computers from Best Buy or a similar electronics "mega-store" they likely received WinXP Home Edition. (Which is what it sounds like based upon the use of Win9x machines you mentioned.) If that is the case, then you will be unable to get the WinXP machines to see the Samba Server (or a Windows

Does 3MB/sec seem as fast as
John, I haven't done any direct performance testing, although I am planning on figuring that out now. (BTW, how is performance testing ran?) However, I can say that since converting over to the Samba PDC/File Server that the file transfer performance just feels much faster. Regards, Robert Adkins II IT Manager/Buyer Impel Industries, Inc. W2k clients wont' join samba
Ralf, I am using Samba 2.2.5-10 and haven't had any issues with getting Win2K clients to connect to the domain after getting Samba properly configured as a PDC. It could be a minor configuration issue. Although, in my reading I could only get confirmation that Samba 2.2.5-x would work with Windows 2000 Clients regardless of the Service Pack level. You might need to take a

Optimizing Samba
Hello All, I have put together a Samba PDC for a mixed Bag of Windows Client workstations. We have a few Windwos 9x, some Win NT 4.0 and a handful of Windows 2000 workstations. The server is operating fine as a PDC for all workstations, all the permissions are properly set and things are running mostly smoothly. There are a few things that are somewhat slow moving on the network.

Printer not accessible! Plea
Martin, There is a great deal more that needs to be done other then the creation of a smb.conf file for setting up a PDC for any Windows workstations. Unfortunately, I only have experience with setting up a PDC for a mixed bag of Windows 9x, Windows NT 4.0 and Win2K systems. The only WinXP machine we utilize is one laptop, which is rarely ever attached to the corporate network. So,

Locating the MACHINE.SID file...
Hello, I am setting up our backup Linux server to act a BDC to our Linux PDC. In the directions that are available within the Swat Online Help... There is a section that states that the private/MACHINE.SID file must be copied over exactly as is to the Samba BDC in order for that machine to act as a Samba BDC to a Samba PDC. For the life of me, I have been unable to locate that

Recovering lost data from a journal
Hello All, I was curious to know if there is any method for recovering data that has been deleted by a user on accident, this occurred prior to the running of the official back-up. Anyway, a user ended up losing a few hours of work, so I need to attempt to recover what I can, if at all possible. Any suggestions? Phantom Domain Master Browser
There's a phantom domain master browser showing up in my Samba nmbd.log file. I keep thinking that maybe it is left over in one of the files that I transferred over from the old server to the new server and it isn't clearing itself out. Is there a way to clear that and is it possible to have a phantom browser fighting over the Domain from a copied over file? I transferred all of the

To all who helped with Ext3fs/ReiserFS Performance Enhancing
First off, thanks! :) It appears that the issue could be a bad switch. At this time, I have turned down the server's NIC to run at 10baseT-FD and the performance has seriously increased. It now takes roughly 25 to 35 seconds to copy and 8mb file to the server, but it now takes a little longer to copy a file from the server. So, we are now in the market for some far superior network
