Changing unix group ownership through Samba
Hi everyone,
First of all, sorry if this is something which the man pages or other
documentation answer. I could not find a simple solution.
I am running 3.0alpha22 on Linux joined to a W2k domain with a Windows
2000 Server domain controller. Authentication is done with Kerberos,
clients are 2000/XP.
I want to be able to change the unix group ownership on directories and
files from the Windows

R-beta: Latin-1 characters in R and X
Hi!
I have tried to print text with Latin-1 characters (????) from R to
postscript and X11 window but when I'm using the interactive R-shell, I
can't get them printed even from keyboard. Is there some configuration
flags to use 7-bit or 8-bit character sets?
TIA

Joining Samba 3.0 to a "pure" Active Directory
Hello.
I'd like to join a Samba 3.0 alpha 21 server running on RedHat 8.0 to an
Active Directory. This AD does NOT support Windows NT 4.0 Domains.
In a previous mail, I've been asked if I already have Kerberos setup and
tested. I don't. How do I test if Kerberos is working correctly for me?
If everything is working fine, I'd like the Samba server to join the AD

lambda, uncertainty coefficient (& Somers D)
Dear colleagues in R,
Has anybody implemented the
1) (Goodman & Kruskal) lambda
or the
2) (Thiel's) uncertainty coefficient
statistics (in the asymmetric and symmetric forms), or is anyone aware
that they might reside in some package? A search in the R archives
does indicate that they are (somehow) part of the CoCo package, but I
would rather not start learning how to transform my

IRC channel #asterisk on irc.freenode.net
Hi all!
It's great to start with "for dummies" question, but hey, we all have
been human infants also =)
Problem is, that I can not log on to this channel and I haven't found
anything helpful during the past few days either.
1. The irc.freenode.net server gives me "Couldn't look up your hostname"
and "No identd (auth) response" followed with

H0 and H1 probabilities in Cohen's Effect Size w for X2 test
Dear all,
I've been delighted to just notice that Cohen's formulas for
Effect Size 'w' and the associated power have been implemented in
the 'pwr' package (thanks to St?phane Champely and others)..
There is one aspect, though, that perplexes me. I'm doing some last
minute post hoc analyses, meaning that my sample size (N=3404) has
been long fixed, and I'm

Fwd: Bad \usage lines question
Dear colleagues,
In checking a function I am adding to an R package, I get the following

Reading in a table with ISO-latin1 encoding in MacOS-X (Intel)
Dear colleages in R,
I have earlier been working with R in Linux, where reading in a table
containing Scandinavian letters ("?", "?", and "?") in the header as
part of variable names has not caused any problem whatsoever.
However, when trying to do the same in R running on new MacOS-X (with
an Intel processor) with the same original text table does not seem to

Joining samba to AD domain with a non-admin user
I need help to resolve this issue.
I saw that Andrew put a patch by Antti to enable users without full admin
access to join samba into an AD domain. I am playing with it and always get
"Insufficient access". Using the same user, I can join a Windows box into
the domain just fine. The user is a member of "domain users", but not
"domain admins". I can use a

Limit + Conditions = Confusion
Hi,
Could you please explain the :limit to me? I thought I knew what it was
but now it seems I''ve misunderstood something.

Replacing custom kernel with another - with same identifier
Hi list,
I just finished building a custom kernel from 2.6.18-53.1.21 source rpm
- this time with ISA bus and ISAPNP support which I accidentally left
out of my previous attempt.
Unfortunately, this time I forgot to change my identifier in
kernel-2.6.spec file. Thus I now have one *installed* kernel version
*without* ISA support, and another one *with* ISA support but as rpm,
not yet installed.

[ANNOUNCE] libX11 1.7.0
Here's a summary of changes from README.md:
libX11 version 1.7.0 includes a new API, hence the change from the 1.6
series to 1.7:
* XSetIOErrorExitHandler which provides a mechanism for applications
to recover from I/O error conditions instead of being forced to
exit. Thanks to Carlos Garnacho for this.
This release includes a bunch of bug fixes, some which have been pending for over

Index update - problems
Hi,
Rails 1.2.2
Ruby 1.8.5
Ferret 0.11.4
I have pretty big forum that has 2 columns that are indexed, in addition
to this couple more tables with far less data are indexed.
It seems that first index update works. Mysqld process takes the idle
CPU time, but behaves nicely.. until at some point it takes 99% and
doesn''t let other processes use it :) I''m forced to restart mysqld.

Coefficient of determination for non-linear equations system (nlsystemfit)
Hello everyone,
I have estimated system of three linear equations with one non-linear
restrictions with nlsystemfit. I was wondering how I can calculate the
R-squared (or some alternative coefficient of determination) for the
whole system. This is automatically given by linear systemfit but not by
nlsystemfit. I can get the values for each of the equations separately,
but apparently not for

R-News 5/2, Bayesian Model Averaging, a detail
The article on BMA (Bayesian model averaging) presents most valuable tools for model selection, but I find one detail confusing in Example 1. In page 4 of RNews 5/2, second paragraph says that the probability of Time variable not being in the model is 0.445. It seems to me that the figure should be 1 - 0.445 = 0.555, because p!=0.445 is the prob. of Time variable being in the model. The plot in

I know it's not related to bandwidth/CPU/memory issues, at least not
directly. Consider the following:
I've been running tests where I've set up more than one instance of
streamTranscoder - all running on the same machine as the Icecast server
and with identical config files - to

Yeah, there's a lot of spare CPU power and memory. The icecast server
takes 0,0% CPU and each streamTranscoder instance only takes 0,0-0,3%.
This is a dedicated Icecast server with 1GHz PIII and 512 MB RAM.

[PATCH] PermitRootLogin woes
Hi all,
among other things, we provide shell access to various unix based
platforms for our students and university staff. Recently, there has been
increasing number of root login attacks on one particular Tru64 machine
running OpenSSH.
The host is configured with "PermitRootLogin no" but every once in a while
SIA auth with TCB enhanced security locks the root account.
I suppose
