NT domains -vs- simple workgroups????
Hi, I've been following some of the posts (never
received a reply to mine but found one similiar). I
have a question that I hope you can clarify.
Original question: I can see the server from my
Windows XP machine using network neighbors, but when I
double click on it I get: Path not found
One reply: If you're using NT domains (not simple
"workgroups")...

new to samba, please advise...
Hello all. I'm hoping to get some advise for my
issue. I need to allow other users access to my files
to make changes. They do not have physical access to
the Linux samba server. I want this password
protected so that only those who know the password can
do this. Thanks in advance.

Windows NT Network Client problem
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but since I only have
Samba servers on my network I'll toss it out and see if anyone knows
anything about it.
I was originally testing a network configuration that was going to contain
an NT PDC, but have since decided to go with a Samba server using workgroups
for the time being. Samba is up and running and the Windows 95 and 98

Different workgroups/networks...
Hi
I'll first describe our setup:
We have two different networks, one for teachers, and one for students. They
are divided from each other, except for ip traffic, and it should stay that
way, because students are not allowed to reach the teacher's server...
(So when using samba more, I'll have to setup a better firewall I think,
and/or samba rules from which IP shares may be

Performance Samba 2.0.6 / FreeBSD 3.4 vs NT and NetWare
I'm getting samba setup, and it seems to be working. I have PDC/BackupPDC
issues to resolve, and want to change things so the NT PDC authenticates
users instead of setting them up using smbpasswd. Right now, I can access
the samba box from Win98 and WinNT workstation with "manually setup"
smbpasswd's.
I have been testing performance and am a little disappointed, I hoped samba

Tracking WINS Problems
I'm having some problems with (I think) WINS here and am hoping for some
pointers to tools that will help me track down what's going on.
Really, I'd like to be able to get a big dump of all of the names
registered on a WINS server. (The WINS server in question is a NT box to
which I don't have direct access. Ideally, I'd like to be able to see a
nmblookup-style dump showing

Errors related to Samba in httpd log!
Hello list
First and foremost to any developers listening - thank you for Samba - it
is just brilliant.
Apologies - this is a long post...
I am not getting complaints about logon problems from users but I have
noticed in /var/log/httpd/error_log, entries like the following for a few
users when their logon scripts map drives to shares. Looking back I can
see that it has been

How to hook WIN-NT client and WIN-95 client to Samba on Solaris2.5.1 ?
Hello
Sorry for the newbie question..
I am new to Windows environment. I have setup a Samba -Version
1.9.18p10 on a Solaris 2.5.1 m/c.
I want to hook WIN _NT and 95 /98 clients to it.
The Win clients are on the same network and are also hooked to other
Netware servers. I am not sure how this is
done. I have set up entries for the Samba server in the 'lmhosts'
file.

NT Domains and Workgroups
Is this situation a gotcha? Or it may be that I'm looking at the
problem wrongly . .
We have NT servers as PDCs in many regional centres and our head office.
Each local area is a domain. Each local area is also a workgroup, of
the same name.
Now we have been having problems when someone goes from a regional
office with their portable and plugs into head office. Suddenly the

SGI irix and samba
Hi to all,
I'm currently experimenting with implementing a samba server on an SGI
o2 running irix 6.5.3.
The reason for this is that i am trying to shed some load off a netware
server currently serving files to 2 workgroups containing 40 people.
One group is a Survey section that has 1.5 gig of Civil engineering and
Autocad data - this data tends to be of a dynamic nature. I would like

Windows client still tries to connect to old AD after replacement
Thanks Rowland,
OK, sorry about this...
Note that the "Old AD" has some errors in their config files, but
everything sort of work so I'm not going to fix those errors - my
concern is obviously just the "New AD". I've not set up printing in the
new AD yet as it doesn't work in the old one anyway, and that's a
discussion in a future thread. Note

Comparisons between samba / NT / Netware
Hi all,
I'm looking for some articles that compare file and print serving on Samba, WinNT and/or Novell Netware, preferably recent versions. My boss is pushing for a reduction of the number of network operating systems that we run.
I hope you can point me towards some "unbiased" articles, etc.
Thank you

what to do ??
Howdy All,
I am the adminstrator in a school which has netware 4.11 ( five servers in
the nds tree )as its main student platform. This has been working very
well over the past 6 years or so.
The school has the ability to obtain a microsoft solution at no cost (
except for the new hardware required, which is the reason for this email
in the first place ).
Advice and opinions are sought on the

Well, the host where you ran that command thinks that "nt4member" is the
DC.? Do you see anything in your configuration file that might indicate
why?? You haven't given us enough information
