If Trying to Recover a Damaged Partition: kbs-CentOS-Extras Has a Tool
Recently (and for ages, I'm sure) folks have suffered partition
destruction and had to try and recover. In the recent thread, the victim
eventually had to resort to Google and fond some package that I can not
remember now.
Well, I was perusing my YumInfo.lst.05, for general info, and I
discovered this (potential) little gem. Thought I would pass it on and
make it "more googleable"

root-partition
Hi all,
I've been working with the ext3-fs for several months (since 0.0.2c),
and it works pretty fine for me, but I haven't found out, how I works to
migrate my root-partition from ext2 to ext3.
I tried it with the commands at the lilo-prompt, but it didn't work.
I only received a kernel panic.
Any ideas, how I can migrate to ext3 on my root-partition?
tnx,
Joachim

ext3 problem on recover...
I have rebuilt my kernel 2.4.10 for ext3, converted all my
partitions and hard coded them in my fstab to ext3.
when I type "df -t ext2", none of my partitions show up.
when I type "df -t ext3", all my partitions show up.
Everything seems to work fine.
except upon a recovery...my system runs fsck and seems to do a
ext2 recovery, which takes some 15-20 minutes.
any ideas?

mounting gfs partition hangs
Hi,
I have configured two machines for testing gfs filesystems. They are
attached to a iscsi device and centos versions are:
CentOS release 5.4 (Final)
Linux node1.fib.upc.es 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Thu Sep 3 03:33:56 EDT 2009
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
The problem is if I try to mount a gfs partition it hangs.

Recover /usr/lib/libc.a
Hello,
I'm using Centos:
/proc/version = Linux version 2.6.18-128.el5

I did a mistake and erased libc.a from /usr/lib
How can I recover it without reinstalling Centos ?
Thanks.

Trying to recover erased logs
Hi,
I''ve had several people ask me about a comment I made in a previous post;
<quote>
Dan, firstly, if you haven''t touched the compromised system much, do a
"dd" across the raw disk and grep it for log fragments. I have seen vital
erased logs recovered this way before!

I shall try and explain a bit more!

Hi everyone,
I have got a hard disk which was damaged by a fall and would like to
recover a few files from that. (There is a backup for most of the
data, but a handful of recent files are missing. These are important
enough to spend some time on them, but not for paying a professional

SSD Optimizations
I''m looking to try BTRFS on a SSD, and I would like to know what SSD
optimizations it applies. Is there a comprehensive list of what ssd
mount option does? How are the blocks and metadata arranged? Are there
options available comparable to ext2/ext3 to help reduce wear and
improve performance?
Specifically, on ext2 (journal means more writes, so I don''t use ext3 on

ext3 partition still gets mounted as ext2
I'm using the ext3-patched version of Linux 2.4.13 (the patch from Andrew
Morton's UOW site). I compiled both ext3 and ext2 into the kernel. I've also
done "tune2fs -j /dev/hda3" and changed /etc/fstab to ext3. However, when I
boot up, the filesystem still gets mounted as ext2. I've been trying to
figure out why for many days now.. any ideas?
Here's my setup:

recover data on usb drive
Hi gang
I just did a really stupid thing...
I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive,
thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh.
then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh.
Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all
suggest for trying to get my data back?
Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it

Overwriting ext2 Partition with ext3
Hi,
Suppose you have an ext2 Partition at 14GB which is 80-90% full.
Most files are smaller than 1 MB (there are just 20 or so which are
over 100MB where 800MB is the biggest one).
Block size etc - everything is default.
Now you do this:
mke2fs -j /device
Important is the "-j" switch.
What happens without the "-j" switch? All superblocks and inodes
are overwritten. Is this

EXTLINUX
I am trying to boot a ramdisk on a usb stick in read-only mode using
extlinux. When the system boots all I am getting is a blinking cursor.
The stick booted with lilo, but I had some issues with lilo so I am
trying extlinux.
1) I partitioned the stick as a linux partition, formated it ext2, and
mounted /dev/sda1 on /mnt/flash.
2) I am running extlinux 3.86.

Unofficial Samba+ACL howto
Hi all,
As promised, I have started a howto document on setting up Samba with NT ACL
support, based on experiences in my workplace, as documentation for this
seems to be on the short side at the moment.
It is available at the following address:
http://www.bluelightning.org/linux/samba_acl_howto
I have yet to convert it to proper DocBook format, and it needs more material

ext3 partition still gets mounted as ext2 for me too!
Hi,
I am a new ext3 user and I am having problems similar to what many
people are facing on this list.
I have done everything as the emails suggest. I am using SuSE 7.3 with
the the 2.4.10 kernel and ext3 compiled as a module. Because it is
2.4.10 kernel, I created all my journals from a rescue disk and
everything seems to be working right for the non-root filesystems. My
fstab has all my

box standard kernel 2.2.x failes to mount cleanly unmounted ext3 partition
Hi Everyone!
Just to let you know,
I am very happy ext3 made it thorugh to linux kernel 2.4.15
We have installed ext3 on several machines here at jtrix.org (including two
laptops) and everything seems to be working fine.
Our only concern is for our two public servers. They run linux 2.2.19 for
stability reasons. On one of the laptops (dual booting 2.2.19 and 2.4.14)
kernel 2.2.19 failed to

recover data from linear raid
Hello,
I had a scientific linux 3.0.4 system (rhel compatible), with 3

This system was obsoleted so i move the raid disks to a new
scientific linux 3.0.7 installation. However, the raid array was not
detected ( I put the disks on the same channels and same master/lsave
setup as in the previous setup). In fact

What is really puzzling me is that the ataraid device (/dev/ataraid/d0p1 mounted as /bigdisk)
2x 123GB IBM Deskstar's is formated as ext2...top and ps etc... show a fight between kjournald and kupdated
and all searches for kjournald or kupdated fights suggest ext3 issues... :-)
