ps -ef | grep mbd reports only mbd
Again, Following Carter's book, and after starting smbd and nmbd with " smbd -D ; nmbd -D" I do a "ps -ef | grep mbd". Only nmbd is report with it's PID. smbd never is reported. Jerry's book [2nd ed.] states that both should show up with their respective PIDs. I have searched through over one hundred pages of documentation and cannot find the answer as to

Sync'ing user and group ID's
Heya, I'm new to this particular area of linux admin, and I noticed the behaviour of the new samba CIFS's linux driver. The only problem was that the user and group ID's of the files in the mounted directories were rather strange, as these ID's were not in sync between the server and the client. My question is how do I keep them in sync, how I would deal with, say, a laptop

Supermicro MBD-C2SBC-Q-O (C2SBC-Q) & Xen & VT-d
Hi All, I checked the on-line manual for the Supermicro C2SBC-Q (Intel Q35 chipset) and it has VT-d support. Wanted to see if anyone has worked with this particular board with Xen and VT-d before I "pull the trigger" on purchasing it for a lab. Thanks! -- Daniel Kao Übermind, Inc. "Doh!", or: The Sync'ing Feeling I Get With Recursion
This message describes (imho) a behaviour bug in rsync. I'm going to submit a patch, but before I dive into the code I want to know what the actual desired behaviour should be. In other words, please comment. I have some directories I want to keep synchronised between two machines (call them "master" and "backup"). Every now and then someone deletes a file on

many smbd processes when sync'ing sysvol
Hi there, I have three S4 servers running as AD DCs. In order to keep the sysvol share in sync I'm using crontab to run the following command: /usr/bin/rsync -PavAX --delete root@<masterPDC>:/var/lib/samba/sysvol/ /var/lib/samba/sysvol/ However everytime this command is run a couple of extra smbd processes are started on the <masterPDC> (between 2 and 5 processes) which never

How to prevent /var/log/samba/log.[sn]mbd creation?
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=311300 I agree with comment #48, with "syslog only = Yes" early log messages should go to stderr. As the current behavior is by design, I ask if there is some way to prevent these files of being created. "log file = /dev/null" did not work (Fedora 18, Samba 4.0.0rc5). Regards, Marcos

Sync'ing Samba LDAP with MySQL?
Hey all. I started asking about this about a week ago, then got so sick I could hardly get out of bed. Now that I' m basically recovered(and no, it wasn't Covid, thank goodness), I want to pick up where left off. I'm about to provision the samba domain for my test setup. As long as that works, the next step is to ensure that information in Samba's LDAP database is properly

VT-d with Supermicro MBD-X10SAE-O
Hi all, I''m having difficulty getting VT-d to work correctly with a new Supermicro MBD-X10SAE-O in QubesOS <http://qubes-os.org/trac>, and I''m hoping someone here might be able to help me (or at least shed some light on my situation). A Qubes developer suggested I contact this list. Here''s my HCL post from the qubes-users group

Illegal instruction: 4 (core dumped) when running testparm & [sn]mbd with default config
I'm running FreeBSD 8 on a Sheevaplug (ARM5 processor) I compiled and installed Samba 3.3.9 from ports using defaults and defaults for dependencies. I left the smb.conf file untouched, ran testparm and immediately received the coredump. The same happens running smbd and nmbd. Can anyone help me resolve? http://old.nabble.com/file/p26879957/testparm.core.gz testparm.core.gz -- View this

pauses sync'ing between tmpfs and disk on Linux 2.4.x
I've set up a 1GB tmpfs filesystem on a system with a single IDE disk and 2GB's of memory. I'm storing a large amount of RRD files (~300MB) on the tmpfs filesystem to make their generation a bit speedier... this part works great. However, I want to rsync these files over from time to time to a directory on the local filesystem (same physical server). I'm using rsync 2.6.4pre3

hdparm strange behaviour on centos 5.0 using the latest kernel
After booting into Linux 2.6.18-8.1.3.el5xen #> hdparm -tT /dev/sda /dev/sda: Timing cached reads: 10512 MB in 1.98 seconds = 5306.82 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 210 MB in 3.02 seconds = 69.58 MB/sec Then I start a domu with the command: #>xm create <domainname> This domain uses file based Virtual block devices. hdparm strangeness
I've got a brand new .5U P4 system running several (I think) Seagate 80gig SATA drives. I tried to copy data from the first drive (sda) to the second drive (sdc) and was only getting about 1.7megs/sec. So I figured DMA was off. And this is what happened when I typed "hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc": /dev/hdc: setting using_dma to 1 (on) HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted

hdparm equivalent for SATA
Hi, I was wanting to run the equivalent of "hdparm -Tt /dev/hda" except on a SATA hard disk. What is the equivalent command for an SATA drive? I was wanting to see what kind of speed I am getting on the SATA drive. thanks, Jerry

Standard location for hotplug-time hdparm invocation
I need to disable the spin-down on an external USB drive because it spins down spontaneously while in use. The drive forgets the spindown-disable state across power outage so I need to reissue the hdparm command with each boot or hotplug. Where should I put the hdparm command to do this?

Advice on virtio, or any virtualization solution for hdparm
At the present moment, my guest is running inside qemu and host is kvm intel, running Ubuntu 14.04, kernel is 4.3.0 stable. From within the guest, when I run "hdparm -i /dev/sdb" on the guest, I get: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Invalid argument as the error, but on the host, I will get the full harddisk/SSD info. Can I know how to resolve this so that the output is the same for both

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having, of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long. My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours, while the same regular one rand nearly six. I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran
