Speed issue
Hi all, I am trying to migrate a NetWare file server to samba (on Red Hat 9). My problem is that unfortunatelly samba is somehow painfully slow, when we run DOS programs from it on the client machines. The NetWare server is an ancient machine. P1, probably. The Samba server is P4 3G, 1G RAM, RAID mirroring, etc. We are running and old DOS program on the client machines, and when it's

NT domains -vs- simple workgroups????
Hi, I've been following some of the posts (never received a reply to mine but found one similiar). I have a question that I hope you can clarify. Original question: I can see the server from my Windows XP machine using network neighbors, but when I double click on it I get: Path not found One reply: If you're using NT domains (not simple "workgroups")... What is the

SAMBA slower than MARSNWE...
I actually find Samba a very kewl server app so the subject isn't coming from someone that has a preference for Netware over samba. My issue is actually two-fold, one being the record locking problems in Samba and the other being the slowness of dos apps in samba. I'm not going to post any log messages here as I don't feel that for this post they're really very relevant.

How important are oplocks?
Hello, I'm wondering just how critical it really is to turn off oplocks. It appears that not only Windows 2k server, but also Netware 5 and above defaults to having these enabled. I just spoke with two software companies running databases off of file servers (no database server, just MDAC stuff), and they had never heard of it, much less require it to be disabled. Everything I've

High CPU on multiple syncs on Win2K
Hi all, Allow me to quickly sketch our backup situation: we have about 40 sites. On each site there's a Rsync client on an NT machine (Cygwin). In the main site we have a huge Win2K fileserver which acts as a Rsync server. I'm doing tests now with syncing the volumes of several Netware servers on the sites (to which the Rsync NT clients have a mapping) to the Win2K server. Initially we

Newbie (groan... !) Client Problem
I've studied the books, searched the list archives, etc. I suspect there is someone who can just tell me one thing to tweek, so I humbly beg your advice. Situation: I am playing with/learning Linux, intending to replace our two company Netware servers sometime in the next 6 months. At home, I have an NT4.0/SPC PDC, an NT4.0/SP6 docked laptop, and an HP server with RH7.1 or 7.2 (2.4.??

Samba Question w/ RH 7.3 and Windows
Hello, A question I'm sure has been answered before, but I'm still relatively new to Samba, and having just moved, have not been able to locate any of my Samba reference materials. Anyways, I'm running a small Samba server at work using RedHat Linux 7.3. I did not set up Samba during the RedHat installation, but rather downloaded it and installed it afterwards. Anyways, the network

Novell support
Howdy everyone, I'm new to this list and new to Samba (although others at my company have experience with it). Anyway, I'm sure this has come up many times in the past but I have several Netware servers that people at remote sites need access to. The clients are Windows 95/98/NT, they all connect to their own NT domain (one domain per site), and they do NOT want to install the Novell

Samba server authenticating to NetWare server?
Hello, I've been Googling and O'Reillying around this problem for the last week without success, so I'm either stupid or it's not possible. My money's still on stupid. Can someone confirm that I can't do what I want to do: - Have a SuSE 9.1 Linux box running Samba 3.0 exporting shares by SMB. - Have users log into Windows boxes running a NetWare client,

Performance Samba 2.0.6 / FreeBSD 3.4 vs NT and NetWare
I'm getting samba setup, and it seems to be working. I have PDC/BackupPDC issues to resolve, and want to change things so the NT PDC authenticates users instead of setting them up using smbpasswd. Right now, I can access the samba box from Win98 and WinNT workstation with "manually setup" smbpasswd's. I have been testing performance and am a little disappointed, I hoped samba

How to hook WIN-NT client and WIN-95 client to Samba on Solaris2.5.1 ?
Hello Sorry for the newbie question.. I am new to Windows environment. I have setup a Samba -Version 1.9.18p10 on a Solaris 2.5.1 m/c. I want to hook WIN _NT and 95 /98 clients to it. The Win clients are on the same network and are also hooked to other Netware servers. I am not sure how this is done. I have set up entries for the Samba server in the 'lmhosts' file. The

Looking for Large Scale SAMBA Install Success / Failure Stories
Samba Users, I am looking for a Large Scale SAMBA success or failure story. I have been using Samba for a long time without any issues, however replacing many Netware servers with Linux/Solaris running Samba is a different story. Here is what is running through my mind 1. Novell 4.x causes a never ending stream of problems, including attacking and flooding the network with NDS tree fragments.

Samba limitations
My company is seriously considering moving our existing NetWare 4.11 file servers to Samba Linux servers (Red Hat 8). Our current servers hold (on average) 400GB of data each (some much more) on various volumes (our largest volume at this time is 400GB). Most of this space is used by multimedia files which are >1GB up to 4GB (yes, for a single file). We have about 200 users who have access to

password stuff
Greetings All: I hope everyone had a fun Halloween weekend (I carved 4 big pumpkins and gave out a bucket full of rubber eyeballs and stuff). I'm hoping somebody can explain the password behavior I've been seeing (and a couple of other things). Here's my setup: An isolated LAN (most clients have modems for dialling out) with one linux/samba machine (RedHat 4.2, kernel 2.0.30,

Win98 problem, but not 2000/XP
I'm using an old version of Samba 1.9.18p8 (it's the only one that'll compile on the system I'm using it on) and am having trouble with Win98 clients, 2000/XP clients work OK. Windows 98 can see the server and see the shares but can only open files as read only and cannot browse and sub folders within the share. If anyone can shed any light on this I'd be grateful. Cheers

Rsync & the changing File 'Date Modified'
I am using Rsync to backup 4 Linux/Samba servers to a Netware 6.5 server over a VPN. Also using cyRsync to backup XP computers to the same Netware 6.5 server ovre a LAN. Rsync is run from a cron job on the Linux servers and the actual process works fine. However, I have found that when I rsync to the Netware Server from either Linux/Samba or Xp, the file Date Modified is changed to something like

Virtualisation of Netware?
Hi, I am hoping someone can kick me up the learning curve (!) on Virtualization: We have an old piece of data logging software that was written in Turbo Pascal 6 using a file I/O module tuned to Netware and so it expects its data files to be on a Netware server and will not access them locally or via an MS/Samba share - essentially, it uses direct NCP calls for parts of its data access. Help to a wet-behind-the-ears Linux newbie
Hi :-) I am struggling through a RH 8.0 install on a machine we are looking to replace our Netware server. I got tapped to do this as I support the Graphics Deparment Mac OS ASIP server (running over 2 years now without a crash and no outage except for general maintenance). I am attempting to set up SAMBA to provide file sharing for our Windows clients (something not for the faint of heart,

rsync 2.5.5 port to Novell NetWare
Hullo, all. I diligently consulted the suggested reading on the way in: > Welcome to the rsync@lists.samba.org mailing list! PLEASE READ THIS > IMPORTANT ETIQUETTE MESSAGE BEFORE POSTING: > http://www.tuxedo.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html 'Twas a quick read, given that I'm the co-author. ;-> I recently received an odd inquiry from someone I didn't know at all,
