reliability of dump/restore on ext3 systems?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I've been asked whether there are any outstanding issues in using dump/restore to backup ext3-based systems. The persons asking me this had mentioned previously hearing that dump may be unreliable and was asking for verifcation. Re: RArcInfo question(basic=T, newbie=T, annoying=T)
Dear Steve, I'll post your question also to the R-help mailing list since I think this can help to other RArcInfo users. As I mentioned in the last release of the package, I have a tutorial nearly finished. I hope to release it in the next days. > I have downloaded an .e00 file of 2000 Census Tracts for the southern US > State of Georgia, and I'm wondering which steps I need to go

FS corruption; HTREE-related?
Over the last two days we've been seeing a fair bit of this: ---- # ls -laR > /dev/null ... ls: ./server2/b/user/bxyz/392.: Input/output error ---- This is with the latest htree patches applied to 2.4.19, and latest e2fsprogs-test, on a dual AMD system, with 5x73GB SCSI drives on a MegaRAID controller. We're using the gcc 2.96 that comes with RH7.3. esfsck shows "Inodes that

Updated 2.4 htree patches available for 2.4.21rc5
I've backported all of the bugfixes to the 2.5 dxdir/htree patches to 2.4, and have created a new set of patches for Linux 2.4.21rc5. At this point it *looks* like we've fixed all of the htree bugs that people have reported, including the brelse bug, the memory leak bugs, and the NFS compatibility problems. I've done *very* light testing, and things seem to work, but I'm now

htree stabilitity and performance issues
Guys, I have recently applied the latest 2.4 htree patch on a heavily loaded nfs server. The nfs server serves around four very busy clients that deliver email in maildir format and pop3/imap clients. Being maildir I presumed that the htree patch would improve performance - but I was wrong. Load on the server went up by around 25-40%. After 3-4 hours of heavy use the clients load went up to

RArcInfo:Â can't read arc coverage
Dear all, > On the advice of Virgilio, I converted my Arc v.8x coverage into v.7x, but > that made no difference (ESRI documenation says they should be the same anyway). D. Morisette has also reported some 'weird' coverages, which do not follow the standards. Perhaps you have one of them. Please, take a look at http://pages.infinit.net/danmo/e00/docs/v7_bin_cover.html Anyway,

reading big arrays from C
hello. I am trying to read a big file with different sections each with a different format, actually it is a map in format *.e00 of MapView. I can read the whole file with no problems from R using scan() but it takes too long, some files are 50 meg and have to be read line by line to catch the section codes. So if I do the reading from C would it be faster? if it is, how do I manage with the

Fax from Widows
Hey Guys We've been using the respond program with SMB fax services and it's worked pretty good. But I have one need which is not addressed by this software, which I'm hoping maybe I can pay someone to hack into the windows code. I need Respond to send a cover letter prior to being sent out, independent of the program queueing the print job in windows. I was thinking I might be

Restricting to a subset of the domain controllers on a site
Had a situation where users could not map drives from Windows XP to Solaris 9 system running Samba-3.0.10 for Active Directory. This system has been running for a couple of years without problems. Now recently, the site administrators have added some new servers to the domain which may have introduced a problem. This krb5.conf file has been modified to hide the site in question. [libdefaults]

ext3 hang with smp 2.4.18, 2.4.19-pre2 systems
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I am running a dual Athelon/Tyan MP system. It is a pretty simple minded setup, 512 MB ram + a few ide disks. No raid, no scsi, no disk quotas, no nfs, no samba. Recently I have been able to hang the system (requiring hardware reset, can't ping, console frozen) at will by doing large compile jobs. This has occurred with a stock RedHat 7.3

Kernel 2.4.19 ext3 problem
My system is RH7.2 with custom 2.4.18 or 2.4.19 kernel(s), downloaded from kernel.org. My root filesystem is ext3 on ataraid. I'm using initrd. My system comes up fine with 2.4.18 kernel, but when trying to boot a new 2.4.19 kernel I get the following sequence:

ext3 + quota + 2.4.19 + load
hi, I was trying to use ext3 with quota and 2.4.18, but when the system had sustained load, eventually the system fell on deadlock. By that time, I was told to use the latest -ac patch, and maybe the problem would no longer exist. But instead I went back to ext2 and waited for 2.4.19 to come out. Now I tryed 2.4.19 with ext3 and all the same thing, but the system hanged up again. Please tell
