Cloning very slow?
Yesterday I cloned one of my VMs and, somewhat implausibly, it took
virt-clone something like 8-9 hours to clone the 8Gb disk image...
Copying it from the command line took a mere 6.5 minutes.
I assume this is a bug, and it's not expected to take this long ;-)
This was using virt-clone from python-virtinst-0.500.2-1.fc12.noarch in
the virt-preview repository.

Rd problems when converting DVI version
Hi
Running R v2.0 on SuSe linux 8.2.
I'm trying to build a package (which built perfectly on Windows...) on
Linux, and I ran:
R CMD check mypackage
I got:
* checking mypackage-maual.tex ... ERROR
LaTeX errors when creating DVI version
This typically indicates Rd problems
OK, there are no problems with my Rd - I got 3 warnings but they were
all expected, and the whole package builds find

Simple plot() question
Hi
First a simple question to do with plot(). How do I change the x-axis
labels on a plot?
For example, I am plotting each row of a matrix, and I want each row to
be a line on my graph. Simple really. Eg:
plot(sg[1,], type="l")
When I do this, the x-axis is labelled 1:38, as I have 38 columns in my
matrix. When I do:
plot(sg[1,order(sg[1,])], type="l")
Ideally I would

Replacing all NA values in a matrix
OK, dumb question, and it is probably in the docs somewhere, but after
12 months working with R and quite a while looking at the docs, I still
don't know (or have forgotten) how to replace all NA values in a matrix
at once with some other value. I can do it column by column using
is.na(), but I can't figure out how to do it for the whole matrix. My
apologies, I am ashamed ;-)

Xvfb and R
Hi
I have recently installed and implemented Xvfb (X virtual frame buffer) so that I can create jpegs using R over CGI (SUSE Linux 8.1 and Apache 1.3).
I have noticed that in order to do this, a file (Rplots.ps) is created in my cgi-bin directory everytime a cgi script is run. This could cause problems though as I have a multi-user system where it is possible that two different users will run

Solaris 7 w/ current CVS.
Not sure about any other version, but I know sol7 lacks SIZE_T_MAX which
we are now using in -current.
OpenBSD defines it as ULONG_MAX. Pawing through the Solaris /usr/include
it stated it could be 'u_int' or 'u_long'. Depends on if your are
compiling legacy stuff.
I'm sure other OSes may encounter this issue (not tried Linux, but Redhat
7.x does not define it), but what

cbind() and factors.
Hi
I'm seeing some "odd" behaviour with cbind(). My code is:

quote=NULL, colClasses="character")
> colnames(cat)

> is.factor(cat$Code)

Samba 3.0 stable: make --with-afs fails on SuSE 8.2
Hi All-
I have SuSE 8.2 installed on two different Intel machines, with (as far as
I can determine) all required packages for doing what I'm trying to do
here. Both machines suffer the same problems.
I didn't find any SuSE 8.2 rpms, so I'm trying to build Samba 3.0 (stable)
(24th Sep, 2003) on either of these machines but am having problems with
it.
As root, I did a

Samba(4) + AFS
This maybe more appropriate on the developers list but I'll ask here
first.
Anybody know if any improved support for AFS is being added to either
samba 3 or 4? We currently share all user home directories, shared
files, web sites, etc. etc. from AFS using Samba. This setup is
working great, thank you to everyone involved!! I'm just concerned
that AFS support might not make it

Calculation of group summaries
I know R has a steep learning curve, but from where I stand the slope
looks like a sheer cliff. I'm pawing through the available docs and
have come across examples which come close to what I want but are
proving difficult for me to modify for my use.
Calculating simple group means is fairly straight forward:
data(PlantGrowth)
attach(PlantGrowth)
stack(mean(unstack(PlantGrowth)))

Using jpeg() function over cgi
Hi
I have seen a few posts to this list regarding problems accessing the x11() device over cgi - namely, when trying to create a graphic using the jpeg() function, everything is fine from the command line but it won't work over cgi, producing the error:
"Unable to open connection to X11 display"
Has anyone actually solved this particular problem satisfactorily?
Please reply

Greek characters in plots
Hi
I am running an R script that creates 100s of graphs, and I need to use
the greek CAPITAL letter delta in the mtext() function.
I got as far as expression(delta) but this gives me the lowercase
version.
Can anyone help? I'm using R 2.7 on Windows XP

Mtext doesn't display characters in italic when I use a greek symbol
Following on from my previous mail!
plot(1:10,1:10)
mtext("title", side=3, adj=0, font=3, cex=1.5)
This works as expected and puts the font in italics.
tag <- "A)"
suffix <- "genea::"
plot(1:10,1:10)
mtext(bquote(.(tag) ~ Delta * .(suffix)), side=3, adj=0, font=3,
cex=1.5)
Here, the font isn't in italics, it's normal.
I presume this is some

Kerberos-authentication to a Samba server without a Windows KDC ?
Hello,
i'm currently trying to find a way to integrate a openafs cell and samba
(without plaintext passwords).
this should all be possible with a windows kdc, giving out afs tickets
and forward these tickets to the samba server.
unfortuntely this is not an option here.
is there a way to connect samba 3.x to a mit krb5 server ?

Help with hclust() and plot()
Hi
When I use plot(hclust(dist..)...)...) etc to create a dendrogram of a
hierarchial cluster analysis, I end up with a vertical tree. What do I
need to do to get a horizontal tree?
Also, my users are used to seeing trees who's leaves all "end" at the
same place (eg. Like in minitab). Is this possible in R?
Thanks

Fix AFS and Kerberos interaction
Hello,
I going to use ssh with Kerberos V5 support along with support for AFS. I
don't want to use Kerberos V4 or AFS token passing. The only thing I need
from AFS is creating an AFS token (using appropriate function from krb5 API)
after user's authentication. It seems to me that such scenario is not much
supported by the current code. Rather it is assumed only Kerberos 4 will be
used
