wrong MD4/LM pass for user nobody ? (nobody in smbpasswd)
still trying to solve my domain-problems (from time to time I get
'domain controller cant be found' on a special sambaserver 2.2.3a)
Why does samba complain about wrong password for user nobody ? I
actually found "nobody" in smbpasswd, but I'm not sure if I put it in
there and dont understand why nobody needs to be samba-user.
imho nobody is the unix-account under which

Smbpasswd + password sync on OS X
Samba 2.2.3a on OS-X 10.2.6
Trying to get a standalone server up and running with user level
security. All the users have valid accounts and passwords, but we've
enabled password sync and password chat and chat debug for the accounts
as we don't do authentication against the active directory.
unix password sync = yes
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u

CIFS Session transfer
Hi All,
I would like to know if this is possible and if possible what is the
complexity.
Consider a CIFS client, SAMBA Server1 and Samba Server2.
Say a session is established between a CIFS client and SAMBA server1. Is it
possible for the SAMBA server1 to transfer/redirect/reestablish the
connection to SAMBA server2 without the CIFS client knowing about this? The
session between the CIFS

Should smbpasswd change unix password too?
Hello.
My unix password sync is working ok, thus when an user changes his
password with "Ctrl+Alt+Del|Change Password" in Windows.
However, if I run "smbpasswd" manually, I get two messages saying
"password changed", but the unix password is not changed.
:(
Is this behaviour the right one?
Thanks.

Insecure smbpasswd with ldap ??
hi there i have recently moved all users to LDAP and incorporated the
Samba schema i have allocated servers read only access to the data
except for what is required ie lmpass ... ntpass .. what disturbs me is
that smbpasswd demands write access to
uid, rid, primarygroup,cn,displayname i would rather it did not do this i
fully understand why samba requires write access to other attr's in fact

what is the default amount of time that smbpasswd increments the sambaPwdMustChange value
So I get a phone call about my companie's controler not being able to
log into samba. About two weeks ago we migrated from Win2k Server to
Samba running on LDAP. What would be the default value that
sambaPwdMustChange would be incremented? This is NT Time Right (1 unit
for every 100 ms from 1600 right?)
I just had to bump everybody what I'm guessing is three weeks, but I

DUX UX in smbpasswd??
hallo list,
samba 2.x + SuSE 7.3 working as PDC in NT/W2K-Network:
in the smbpasswd the account flags are set to U, DU, W. But a few
accounts have an added X like UX or DUX. The man page describes only
flags D, U, W and N. what does the X mean or can it be deleted. Anybody
else with this appearance,

Is smbpasswd against windows 2003 server working?
Hi guys,
me again. Please, I would like to know if this is a bug/
incompatibility with windows 2003 server.
I would like that someone that has accounts stored on windows
2003 server make a test and try to change a password of one of
those users from a linux box using smbpasswd -r <w2k3_host> -U username.
For me it always complains about invalid username or password.

'multi-layered' authentication
I need to allow [read] access to a Samba server using both IP filtering &
UserIDs .
For a given list of IP subnets, any user should have access.
Outside these 'trusted' subnets, I need to do User authentication.
I can handle the User authentication OK in several ways.
However, I don't see any way to do the 'short circuit' allow for some IPs,
then use User authentication

[permissions] smbpasswd vs passwd
Hello Family,
I had encounted that as "user" I couldn't change my own passwd with

Fix for smbpasswd Samba 2.2.4 on Solaris only taking 8 character passwords
Under Samba 2.2.4 (and possibly earlier), smbpasswd (when run locally) only
really reads the first 8 characters, as opposed to the full password.
Obviously, this can cause mass confusion. :)
The fix is pretty simple (I would offer a diff, but this is the kind of
thing the configure script should check for...) - under Solaris getpass()
will only return 8 characters - you must use getpassphrase()

moving a samba pdc
hello list,
I had to move a samba pdc server to a new hardware plattform.
So I copied the whole files of the samba shares.
And additionally the following config files:
/etc/passwd
/etc/group
/etc/smb.conf
/etc/smbpasswd
/etc/secrets.tdb
The new server has the same name and ip address like the old one.
But now, the w2k users can no more download their profiles. (w2k says
something like access

template homedir confusion
Hi,
I have set up Samba 3.0.0 with ADS integration. It works fine, with a
workaround for a small oddity.
I use template homedirs like this:
template homedir = /home/%D/%U
On a soon-to-be-retired server running 3.0a19, I have a directory LOCAL
(as in LOCAL.DOMAIN.NAME) containing the homedirs - this works as
expected from the output of "getent passwd", which shows the homedirs of

Samba/smbpasswd/LDAP question
I have my smb.conf configured - I believe - properly to talk to my LDAP
server:
ldap admin dn = "cn=admin,dc=MYDOMAIN,dc=com"
ldap server = ldap.MYDOMAIN.com
ldap port = 389
ldap ssl = off
But if I try to set a password using smbpasswd, it seems to think it
wants to connect to localhost (and fails):
# smbpasswd -D 99 -a dballing
New SMB password:

samba/ldap - smbpasswd/userdelete
Hi...
I'm running samba and ldap (openldap). Using smbpasswd -a username
adds the samba ldap info into the users ldap entry just fine.
The problem is deletion. Running smbpasswd -x username deletes the
ENTIRE user's ldap entry. This is good if I want to delete the unix and
windows account information, but not if I want to just delete the windows
info.
I assume it is because

annoying authentication failure problem: sambatest[ho stname]
Hi Toni,
This error is the result of a test that samba does in the module
"server_validate", (in password.c) to check the password server for a bug
where NT 4 (some versions) would not correctly set the guest bit.
There is currently no smb.conf parameter to allow you to control this
behavior, so to change it , you would need to actually hack the password.c
module to disable it.
