secrets.tdb and IDS
Hi All, I'm fine tuning my home grown IDS system that checks md5 sums of important config files, and was going to put the secrets.tdb file in the mix, but can't find when and where changes are made to this file. We had a change this morning but nobody was logged in to either Unix or Samba, that I can tell. Of course I'm not able to read it either. This is a stand alone samba

Difference Between Domain and ADS security In Reference to Realms
Hi, I've been researching which type of security to use with Samba 3.0.1 and I still don't understand what the difference is between "security=DOMAIN" versus "security=ADS." I complied Samba to include ADS support, and I initially chose "security=DOMAIN." When I use the "net" command I can add it to my domain. However, if I set

using winbind in pam.d/system-auth, double prompts for password
I am using samba-2.2.3a and samb-2.2.4 in my windows-2000 environment and have the my linux systems configured to use winbind in addition to standard unix for authentication. The problem I am seeing is that linux services and programs that prompt for a password will prompt first for unix authentication and then a second time for winbind authentication. Is there anyway to using winbind and unix

Does 2.2.4 need hex user and group rid?
Hi. I'm still having problems to login with Windows 2000 SP2 into my Samba PDC. The idealx howto says: "user and group rids must be given in hexadecimal in LDAP", however it also says: "However, the rids were written in decimal in LDAP. So at least 2.2.3-pre, Samba do not read them as hexadecimal anymore.". What's the case for 2.2.4? hex or dec? Alexander Skwar --

Fix for smbpasswd Samba 2.2.4 on Solaris only taking 8 character passwords
Under Samba 2.2.4 (and possibly earlier), smbpasswd (when run locally) only really reads the first 8 characters, as opposed to the full password. Obviously, this can cause mass confusion. :) The fix is pretty simple (I would offer a diff, but this is the kind of thing the configure script should check for...) - under Solaris getpass() will only return 8 characters - you must use getpassphrase()

Problem with samba and screen saver
I am running: Samba 2.2.4 client On my workstation Red Hat version 7.2 KDE desktop Connecting to our Microsoft network. This works fine. However when I turn on the screen saver with password and the screen locks I cannot get back in (none of my passwords work, including the root password and I must use the power switch to restart the workstation). Pause in access of realtime file transfers when printing
Hello, I'm running Slack 8.1 and Samba 2.2.4. The mp3 I'm playing off of the server, or anything else realtime for that matter, pauses when a print job is sent to the box. I'm printing to a small cheap print server that does lpr. The pause seems to occur when my linux box sends the job to the actual print server (by the looks of my switch activity) hanging off of my printer, so the

Samba 2.2.5 and openldap 2.1.2
Hi, I'm having problems with the current samba releases (2.2.4 + 2.2.5) and the current openldap (openldap-2.1.2-1) redhat rawhide RPMS. I suppose samba is having problems with LDAP v3, because when I try for example: [root@fatboy /tmp]# /usr/local/samba/bin/pdbedit -l Bind failed: Protocol error in syslog appears: Jun 24 00:52:55 fatboy slapd[14370]: connection_get(16) Jun 24 00:52:55

CIFS Session transfer
Hi All, I would like to know if this is possible and if possible what is the complexity. Consider a CIFS client, SAMBA Server1 and Samba Server2. Say a session is established between a CIFS client and SAMBA server1. Is it possible for the SAMBA server1 to transfer/redirect/reestablish the connection to SAMBA server2 without the CIFS client knowing about this? The session between the CIFS

Precedence of usernames w/Winbind
I might be missing obvious here, but here goes: Samba 2.2.4. Using "winbind use default domain = <DOMAIN>" option usernames map correctly, however, when logging on from an W2K machine I still get the autogenerated UID instead of my NIS (Or /etc/passwd) UID. Both nis and files precede winbind in /etc/nsswitch.conf Commenting out winbind from /etc/nsswitch.conf works, which

'multi-layered' authentication
I need to allow [read] access to a Samba server using both IP filtering & UserIDs . For a given list of IP subnets, any user should have access. Outside these 'trusted' subnets, I need to do User authentication. I can handle the User authentication OK in several ways. However, I don't see any way to do the 'short circuit' allow for some IPs, then use User authentication

XP logon to Samba in a AD Domain environment
I have been trying to get an XP machine to logon to a samba (2.2.4-3) installation for the past week. I am using local logons for the samba server and having it prompt me for a username and password (silly I know) when I access the samba box. I just kept getting a logon dialog box back with the "domain\username and the password" back. I searched for a solution and found the registry
