The problem was that the users with wich I tried to connect to the printer where defined as admin users, and I declared root as an invalid user in the samba configuration, so it always give me an access denied because it tried to connect as root. I've discovered a couple of things while troubleshooting my printer setup problems. 1. print$ must be 0744. I ran a level-3 debug, and was seeing "chmod failed" errors. Upping it to level-10, I saw something that pointed to unix rights of 0744; my dir's were set to 0755 or 0777...neither worked. When I set print$ and it's subdir's to 0744, the chmod errors went away.

OK, it's working now. I waited until the production lines were undergoing a shift change and brought down all of Samba, then restarted it. Printing now works just fine. I still don't know what caused the problem, I never saw any error messages in the [sn]mbd or client logs, even with the log level turned turned up to 2.
