Migration to TNG
Hi list,
as a result of horrible error logs and no sleep I would be able to throw my
smb2.2.4 out of the window and take a phone call to dell for a nt box ...
but I'll try once again.
I know, this is the wrong list, but maybe here I get more Developers. My
simple question is: If my PDC (WinS -> named, system is SuSE 7.3 but newest
versions of all relevant software) won't run as smooth

Samba 3 startup
Hello,
I'd like to see if I can get some clarification on what is the preferred
method of starting the Samba daemons (note that we are using Solaris, not
Linux). This is something that I'm not able to find any explanation of in
any of the Samba 3 documentation that I've looked at so far. In Samba 2 I
would have the Samba daemons started up by the following in my /etc/inetd.conf:

Samba stuck!
Hi I wonder if you can help me.
I'm currently studying Networking as a college course and one of the challenges we have been set is to research, then put into practice the mapping of a linux server onto a Windows NT server.
I'll be honest with you, I'm very new to all this so I hope I explain this correctly.
I have successfully created my own smb.conf file, usernames, areas and a

Samba - LDAP - Kerberos
Hello. I'm trying to implement a single-sign-on system with MIT-Kerberos and OpenLDAP. These two are currently working pretty well, but now I'm trying to add samba to this system. I've found a lot of tutorials about samba PDC with LDAP backend, but this is of course not quite what I want. My passwords are stored in the kerberos database and userdata is stored in LDAP.
Is there a way to

Kerberos authentication for non-windows KDCs
I was told recently that Kerberos authentication won't work against a
non-windows KDC. Is that accurate? So for instance, it is not possible
for Samba running on say RHEL, to authenticate against a Linux server
running MIT Kerberos?
Additionally, many people said that setting this up was
well-documented. Any suggestions of particularly good docs / how-to's?'

Concerns about Samba4
Hi everybody.
I attended the Samba conference at the FOSDEM yesterday. Jeremy Allison was
great, and explained very clearly the problems faced by implementing an
Active Directory controller.
The CIFS protocol is required in heterogenous environments. Jeremy made it
pretty clear that even in pure Unix environments, CIFS is quite superior to
NFSv4. Samba is thus a required component of pretty

OK, one more time on the PDC thing
My apologies, I'm terribly sorry to belabor these PDC issues to the point
where everyone is undoubtedly tired of hearing about them, but I have
become absolutely obsessed with trying to solve this PDC problem. Here is
what is happening now. I'm trying to connect to the Samba server which is
set up as the PDC (domain PLAB) from windows client "venus". Windows

Samba perms vs. fs perms
The subject's a little misleading really, but I was looking for some
clarification of my thoughts...
In Windows, one can use both share permissions and NTFS permissions to
control access to files. I would normally use share permissions to control a
connection (allow/deny), and use NTFS to control access. I would never use
share permissions to control access whilst NTFS was capable of

Using NAS as PDC Shares?
Dear List,
We have just bought:
* Dual AMD CPU, 8TB NAS, 4GB RAM (DNUK.COM) - SUSE 9.3
* Two Dell 2850, 3GB RAM, Dual Xeon 3.2GHz, 300GB Raid 5 - Fedora Core 4
Now obviously we want to use the Storage ;-)
How would you guys recommend we proceed?
Samba PDC on one 2850, LDAP Directory on second, and somehow mount the
storage for the shares?
Or run the PDC on the NAS, and keep the LDAP

clarification needed: $ in machine name?
Hello,
Sorry to be a pest, but I need to try to get some clarification of how the
machine name works when setting up a machine account on the Samba
server. The Samba How-To page
http://us3.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/samba-pdc.html#id2536400
talks about the "common error" of including the $ in the machine name on
the server machine. However, all of the

[Fwd: Re: direct descent into home directory]
Hi:
The home directory isn't being maped to a letter (as in netuse h: /home).
After the user chooses the machine the user must login, he then sees in
the window a folder with the same name as his userid. The user must then
choose this folder to enter his home directory.
I want him to go directly into the folder without having to choose it.

Samba faster than Windows 2000 on identical hardware.
This page (of a much longer story) might be interesting :
http://www.pcmag.com/article/0,2997,s%253D1474%2526a%253D16554,00.asp
Netbench results show Samba 2.2 faster than Windows 2000 in
all cases on the same hardware (up to 1GHz processor with 512Mb ram).

Jeremy Allison,
Samba Team.

Call Parking Realtime
Does anyone have any examples of using realtime database driven call
parking lots. I am on version 1.8.x
My goal is to be able to do database driven multi-tenant parking lots with
out adding sperate entries into Features.conf for each lot. I also need to
be able to use the same parking extension pool for each tenant but sand box
them into sperate lots. We have been able to do this for every

Alternative Auth Methods.
hi,
Are there any alternative authentication methods for Samba? Other
thank the smbpasswd file? I'd like to do PostgreSQL or mySQL. Why?
Because I can do Exim/IMAP/POP3 Apache/Zope with SQL, if I could do
Samba it would wrap it up into one nice DB for authentication.
It does not have to be much, just the ability to get the data from
a SQL query rather than a flat file query.

Kerberos Password Changes
Hi all,
I apologize if I am getting into a subject that has been hashed and rehashed
endlessly on this list, but I am just not finding exactly what I am looking
for in terms of a response.
At the moment, I have Linux and Solaris servers happily authenticating to my
MIT Kerberos KDC, and fetching user information via an OpenLDAP server with
a StartTLS connection (and authenticating to the LDAP
