'Not listening for calling name'
I'm having a strange problem with samba, 2.2.3a running on an out-of-the-box SuSE 8.0 system. This is the first time I've set it up (hence the dumb questions I was asking on here a day or two ago). I've now worked my way through diagnosis.txt and a couple of odd netBIOS issues with the NT4 PDC, and at last I have some shares set up that my Windows client can use quite happily.

AW: add user script going Horribly Wrong (tm)
(Oups! I forgot to send it to the list so everyone could laugh about it. Sorry Vicky for disturbing directly) Good Morning, Vicky! Seems your smb.conf is messed up a little. As I can see you're using security = domain. With this configuration the smbpasswd-file/feature isn't need at all. Authentication is done encrypted with the domain user database, not with the smbpasswd file. The

Why can't my backup user log in to the share?
I'm trying to work out why I have the following problem, and I'd really appreciate any help you guys can offer: I have a samba share mapped as drive o: to an NT4 server, which happens to be the machine that takes our backups. What I want to do is back up the data on the Samba share too. Simple enough, you'd ahve thought, and I can back up stuff from a Windows share fine. But,

add user script going Horribly Wrong (tm)
Hi, I've tried to set up automated user addition and deletion on our Samba server, but something's going wrong. Users appear in /etc/passwd, but not in smbpasswd, so people are getting login errors and so on when they try to access the share. Have I missed a bit of config that's supposed to tell samba to set up smbpasswd's too? (smb.conf included below). Thanks! Vicky Clarke

Strange apparently WinDNS-related problem
We have a Linux box running Samba in a domain with a Windows NT Server PDC. The samba shares have disappeared from users' machines this morning, and in the event viewer on the PDC (which is authenticating users) I see an event ID 5723 with message "The session setup from the computer SAMBA failed because there is no trust account in the security database for this computer. The name

Culling dead smbd's?
I seem to be having a problem whereby every time a user fails to authenticate with Samba, smbd stops responding to that particular client and has to be restarted. Apart from 'what on earth's going wrong with my authentication', there are two things I'd like to know: firstly, is it the main smbd/all smbd's which lock, and secondly, if not is there any way (on SuSE Linux) to

NT account locking out
Hi I have Win2k servers connecting to the samba server by mapping a windows user to unix user. We never had any problems with thsi connectivity but for past 2 weeks we have an erratic problem which causes the windows account to lock thus making samba unfunctional. When I get the windows account unlocked then samba starts functioning properly again. I do not have a scenario to reproduce the

NT MD4 password check failed
Hello All, Well, I've admitted defeat. I've installed Samba 2.2.3a on a Solaris 7 machine and am trying to connect to it from a Win2K SP2 PC. I am using encrypted passwords. The same user (darren) exists on the pc (called 'plm') and the samba server ('sparky2'). The password for this user is the same on the PC, and the /etc/shadow and /apps/samba/private/smbpasswd

error: prs_mem_get: reading data of size 60 would overrun buffer.
Hello everyone, we try to use a server running linux in an NT-domain and get the error message given in the subject-line. More details from the logfile and smb.conf are given below. Can anyone give us a hint what the problem is? (Of course...) The problem is very urgent for us. Thanks a lot in advance. Helmut Rickel ================= smb.conf ======================== [global]

Samba:connection only works one time
Hi all, using samba 2.2.5; security=server connecting as user1 (user logged in on PC) works (12:28:55), disconnecting and connecting as another user2 (not the user logged in on PC) works too (12:30:22), but disconnecting and connecting again as user1 (user logged in on PC) fails (12:34:29) as well as user2 (12:38:19). It seems it works only once and never again after one time logged in as user2 ?

Changing password from Windows 2K / XP client on samba server with different passwords on client and server
Hello all, I've got a problem when I try to change a password from W2K or XP on a samba 2.2.5 - server. That's the situation: The user "hugo" is logged on locally or in a domain "first" with his password "secret". The user has shares on a secound domain, the "samba" domain, too. The user can do a net use M: \\samba\share to get the share on the

Auth. from Win2k Works
We have been able to get windows workstations to validate against win2k for authentication, but in looking at local shares on the linux box (via samba), do the users need to be localized to a group in /etc/group to allow access to files on the linux system that samba is running on. Here is the smb.conf we have come up with (along with modifications): [global] workgroup = donbest

strange Samba - NT4 domain connectivity problem.
Hi all. I'm having a strange intermittent problem with Samba 2.2.8a losing connectivity with our PDC and BDC. We are currently having a problem with our PDC restarting due to a bug check about 2-3 times a month. When this happens and the PDC is restarted or anytime it is restarted, we are not able to map shares on any of our 5 servers using samba 2.2.8a - the fix is to kill smbd and nmbd

WinXP problems accessing Samba shares
I'm having problems accessing Samba shares from my XP Pro machine. Samba 2.2.7 is installed on two Redhat 8.0 machines and configured using SWAT. I have user level security and encrypted passwords setup. I have a printer shared on both servers as well as home directories and one restricted access share. My printers are setup for guest access so all machines will always be able to print.

Encarta install from Samba server barfs
Greetings: I tried to install M$ Encarta over my internal network onto my kids' Windoze 2K machine tonight; the Encarta install stuff is in a vfat partition on the Samba server. The install started, then quit about 14% of the way through - the connection to the Samba server apparently was lost - the installer began complaining about being unable to find the CD-ROM, and I was unable to browse
