Specifying Browser Computers When you start a computer running Windows 2000, the browser service looks in the registry for the entry MaintainServerList to determine whether a computer will become a browser. MaintainServerList is found in the following registry subkey: \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters Table I.1 shows the values to which MaintainServerList

subnet browsing
we have samba [mostly] working in a VPN application connecting two Mandrake subnets using SSH. if all machines define the same workgroup name, and we define a single domain master browser, (with the other subnet defined as a preferred, local, master browser,) and a single WINS server, after a little while, all shares are visible to all WIN9x machines. this samba stuff is fantastic! 2 questions:

Samba WINS Server losing all elections against
Hello everybody. I've been trying for weeks to find a solution for my problem, but since I couldn't find anything, here I am. I manage a network of about 200 PCs, 90% windows XP and Vista, 10% linux. A samba server is located on the main server, acting as a WINS server, to manage the list of connected computers. However, when a resident computer is badly configured (ie no wins server

local master browser
Hi list, I have a network with a Linux server, running samba 2.2.x, and 10 Workstation. 3 of the workstation are Win2000 and the rest is Win98 and WinME. In the logfiles I see that every 10 Minutes the Win2000 Workstations are forcing a election to become the local master browser for the network. The server wins the election each time but there is still a small amount of time (maybe 4 minutes)

When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when: * There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down. * A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election. Any other times when an election is held? What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two

Understanding the role of DMB/LMB on a net that has a WINS server
If I have a client that wants to enumerate and access shares on a subnet, and that client knows the IP of the WINS server, is there any need for the client to use the "browsing" services of a DMB or LMB? What is the order of operations of the client? Here is what I imagine to be the case: 1. client asks LMB for a list of all available shares 2. LMB sends client the list of all known

I've read too many articles and posts on "domain master browser", "computer master browser", "NT domain browser", "PDC and BDCs", etc. etc. and I've managed to confuse my shrinking brain over this. I apologize in advance if I'm posting a redundant question (I've looked thru archivers best I could) or posting to the wrong place.

/var/spool/asterisk/outgoing/ prematurely hanging up
I have a PSTN termination provider "foo" which will accept standard U.S. calls in the form 1<10 digit ph#>. I have an outbound route named "foo", with dial pattern "5|.", with the only entry in trunk sequence being "IAX2/foo". I have an X-lite local extension, on which I can dial 51<10 digit ph#>, and asterisk will call out over foo and the

Netbios over more then one protocol
Hi, i'm reading: samba-3.0.20a/docs/htmldocs/Samba3-HOWTO/NetworkBrowsing.html#id2564441 ... The election process is /fought out, so to speak/ over every NetBIOS network interface. In the case of a Windows 9x/Me machine that has both TCP/IP and IPX installed and has NetBIOS enabled over both protocols, the election will be decided over both protocols. As often happens, if the Windows 9x/Me

Master Browser
I am using samba-1.9.18p10 in a Redhat 5.1 Linux box. I have a short question, i.e. Is it true that once the nmbd is running and becoming the Master Browser, others win95 clients will not act as Master Browser anymore ? Windows LMB and Samba DMB problems.
Note: LMB = Local Master Browser DMB = Domain Master Browser Have Samba 2.2.7A running embedded in a variant of ucLinux. My interest was only to use Samba as a WINS server. I've set up the SMB.CONF with this config. for one test: wins support = yes local master = no domain master = yes preferred master = no os level = 0 I've set up the SMB.CONF with this config. for the other

LMB and browse.dat Updates
I realize this is most likely the most killed topic anyone on the net. Most of the information i've found don't directly answer this question. I have a Samba server set up as the DMB and LMB via smb.conf. I have set up nmbd to do WINS. I setup all my XP box clients to use my Samba server. I ran Ethereal on the server and can see the Samba server wins election for DMA and LMB. I can

Shouldn’t I see a _MSBROWSE_ entry for each LMB on each subnet ?
I see from the log that my system install won the browser election and I see it show up in the WINS monitor as <1B>, but I can't see other subnets in "Net'Neighborhood" and I didn't see this system having an entry '_MSBROWSE_' like my '03 Server on the other subnet did. Shouldn?t I see a _MSBROWSE_ entry for each LMB on each subnet ? CONFIDENTIALITY

how to stop WfWG local browse master announcements?
this isn't strictly a samba question, but it is related in that i'm trying to a samba server as my domain master browser and multiple samba servers as local master browsers for a workgroup across multiple subnets. everything seems to be working wonderfully except for one WfWG host which does not show up in the browse list as expected. i notice that this host is announcing itself as a

LMB question
Can somebody explain to me how the whole Local Master Browser thing works? I'm running samba across 3 subnets, and all the docs tell you to set up a Local Master Browser on each subnet. I couldn't find any documentation on how to actually do that so I used the remote announce option in smb.conf, and it's working great, but now there are two machines (one for each subnet outside of the
