define subgroups based on position in table
Dear list,
I have a data frame with one column (group) and want to add a second column (sub) with a serial number that says to which subgroup a cell belongs. A subgroup contains the consecutive rows of the same group. The number of a subgroup is based on its position in the table. The first subgroup of A's and B's should have nr A1 and B1, the second nr A2 and B2, etc.. I hope the

Usin ISO Linux & Memdisk to create a Viritual Floppy drive that Linux & Windows can load driver disk from.
Hi,
It is becoming a bad habit for big OEM vendors to sell computers & servers without floppy drives.
Unfortunatly both Windows and Linux (RedHat) need a floppy drive to load storage drivers etc. during installation.
This is what I was thinking:
Use ISOLINUX and MEMDISK to load a floppy image of a driver disk into memory as a viritual floppy drive "A:"/"/dev/fda" And then

GAMM : how to use a smoother for some levels of a variable, and a linear effect for other levels?
Hi,
I was reading the book on "Mixed Effects Models and Extensions in
Ecology with R" by Zuur et al.
In Section 6.2, an example is discussed where a gamm-model is fitted,
with a smoother for time, which differs for each value of ID (4
different bird species). In earlier versions of R, the following code
was used
BM2<-gamm(Birds~Rain+ID+

Struggeling with svydesign()
Dear all,
We are analysing some survey data and we are not sure if we are using
the correct syntax for our design.
The population of interest is a set of 4416 polygons with different
sizes ranging from 0.003 to 45.6 ha, 7460 ha in total. Each polygon has
a binary attribute (presence/absence) and we want to estimate the
probability of presence in the population.
We used sampling with replacement

Need :through to work as has many rather than HABTM.
I''ve a horrible feeling I''m missing something here, but I''d like to have
something like :through to model a has_many relationship rather than a
HABTM relationship (and I don''t think it does).
The is the model I have (simplified):
Users have many Models (and Models belong to Users)
Models have many Pieces (and Pieces belong to Models)

a switchtower recipe to copy rather than checkout
For those who want use switchtower to deploy to a remote server that does not have
access to the main subversion repository, here is a task I just hacked up to use
switchtower to deploy to my servers by copying a local directory to the servers, rather
than have the servers use svn checkout.
I actually create my local directory using an svn export, but you can do whatever you
like here, and just

arules: rules are built on item ordering in the dataframe, rather than
Hi,
I'm trying out the package arules and I'm having a bit of trouble
getting my data to work properly. I have a set of transactions with
the purchased products but each product could appear in a different
column in the data frame. This causes the rules to be built based on
the ordering, which is not significant.
Here is an example:
# # Code:
my.df <- data.frame(

odfWeave - How to Insert eps rather than png
If you create plots and use odfWeave to create an odf text document, the
default for figures is png bitmap graphics. The only way I've found to
insert eps graphics is to first create the eps graphic using the
postscript driver and then use odfInsertPlot. I've tried to use
getImageDefs and setImageDefs but I get an empty plot. Could someone
show an example?

Some Dovecot LDA version sends MDN rather than DSN for overquota.
It appears that there is some version of the Dovecot LDA that is
sending an RFC 3798 MDN rather than an RFC 3464 DSN to report
non-delivery to a user who is over quota.
See <https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/693134> for a discussion
of this and
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/mailman/+bug/693134/+attachment/1773018/+files/Automatically%20rejected%20mail.msg>

Load package using R code rather than GUI Package menu
Is there any way to load a package using R code rather than the Load
Package command in the Package menu? I would like to load the boot
package.

[PATCH] linux/x86: Use cpu_relax() rather than barrier() in smp_call_function()
Short of getting an explanation for the odd difference to native, make
the code match native (and also, in the case of x86-64,
__smp_call_function_single()).
As usual, written and tested against 2.6.24-rc3 and made apply against
2.6.18 without further testing.

Getting value rather than formula in RGoogleDocs
Is there an easy way to read the value of the cells rather than the formula? So
for instance in a cell whose value was created by simply using the value
from the cell immediately to the left in the Google spreadsheet I would
prefer to get the value rather than =RC[-1]
When one exports with Google Spreadsheets as a csv then that does not
happen.
I am using the following line of code in R
