change_trust_account_password failing
samba 2.2.4 on RedHat 7.1 everything is working. wbinfo -t reports a good secret. users can access shares. the samba server shows up in the browser & server manager. However, this server is not able to change the password on it's machine account. I log the following errors once a day: May 29 08:16:33 rhtemp1 smbd[5056]: domain_client_validate: unable to fetch domain sid. May 29

Is 2.2.3/4 as reliable as 2.0.10?
I've been using 2.0.x on my servers for a couple of years & am a very, very happy customer (thanks Samba team). There are only 2, albiet small, annoyances. 1) Any account administration results in changes having to be made on both the NT domain & linux server. 2) I can't do permissions for a "group of groups" on the linux server. It seems that winbind might be able to

Help 2.2.5 causing me to run out of filedescriptors
I've been running Samba & Squid on a RH linux server for years. I'm currently running: kernel - 2.4.9-31 squid - 2.4STABLE-6 /home - 100 GB Reiserfs partition I just upgraded samba from 2.0.10 to 2.2.5 this morning. Now, the server is running out of filedescriptors. I have never had this problem before. What is 2.2.5 doing differently? How can I resolve this problem? Please help,

Has anyone seen this before?
I'm using samba and cups to allow NT/2k machines to print to an HP LaserJet 4000N printer. The printer works fine except for one in house program. In this one program, all the horizontal lines that should be printed are missing. Originally I thought this was a driver problem, but today, for no apparent reason, it started printing the horizontal lines... but only for the first page of each

winbind: problems with group names
Hi, I am running a 3.6.0 server as a member of a Samba4 domain controller and am noticing some behaviour that I do not understand (the domain is FB5, the domain member servers's name is tango) It took me some time to get winbind showing domain users and groups but finally with backend idmap_rid it is _nearly_ working. `getent passwd' and `gentent group' list domain users and groups:

cycling through a long list of files and names
R2.13.2, W7x64 Dear list, Excuse my ignorance, but I have gone through the R help (?parse, ?eval, etc.) and still really don't know how to do the following. I have the general following structure that I would like to automate [edited to make it shorter]: >>> city1997 <- dataCleaning(read.csv2("C:\\city\\year1997.txt")) city1997 <- wasteCalculations(city1997, year

what are *.tdb files?
In /varcache/samba/ I have several .tdb files. Like brlock.tdb, locking.tdb, ntdrivers.tdb, etc. Excusing my ignorance, what are these files, and what do they do? And why must they be copied when migrating from one samba server to a new one?

Samba - getting long share names from Netapp
We defined a share, sales_cifs_test, on our NetApp server. Note that the length of the name is longer than 13 characters. We can see the share with Microsoft Explorer. We can mount the share from Linux using smbmount. What we want to do is to get a list of shares from NetApp. The tools that can do this are the samba programs smbclient and net. Smbclient will not show names longer than 13

facter fails to detect network interfaces with long names
I have Gentoo host where `ifconfig -a` prints long interface names truncated to 9 chars (there is closed bug report [1]). Unfortunately, `facter` uses `ifconfig -a` output to get list of interface names and because of truncation it generates `interfaces` fact with incorrect interface names. Also it fails to retrieve individual interface information with following message for each interface with

long file names and their 8-chars versions
Hello, we have a ubuntu-server edgy file server (file system of the shared files: ext3) and a win xp client with an old program that shows up the 8-char version of long file names. While in windows the association is as follows: longfilename -> LONGFI~1 longfilename2 -> LONGFI~2 ...in ext3 the association is not so 'straight-on' and this forces my colleague to guess the names...

long path names (more than 260 chars) not working under Windows OS, longPathAware missing in exe manifests?
Can you help please? All file und dir funktions and also basename() do not work in R under Windows OS if the path is longer than?260?characters. The problem seems to be, that the manifest for all R executables do not have the longPathAware switch in the manifest. (The registry and or the group policy for the long path name support are enabled) This is the correct extension for the manifest of

rights to change ACL's
Hi all, Installation: RH7.2, 2.4.18 kernel, XFS patch, samba-2.2.4 in windows 2000 domain environment. Authentification is done through winbind daemon. I want only particular users (say, group "Domain Admins") have the ability to change permissions (ACL's), not the owners of file/directory. Is it possible to implement this? Samba 2.2.4 frequent mangled names clashes
Hi all, while working with Netbench I've discovered that mangled directory names clash rather frequently with Samba 2.2.4: If I take an NT box, open the cmd prompt and make the following directories on a Samba share, client100 and client121, both mangle to CLIEN~GH. If I create directories client100 through client130 I see 11 clashes altogether: CLIEN~GH: client100 client121 CLIEN~MF:

After reIP, Samba hosts not browsable.
Hey folks, We recently reIP'ed our main office LAN. Ever since this was done, none of our Samba hosts are browsable via Network Neighborhood. While they are still availible via Start -> Run -> \\servername, it's an annoying inconvenience. Stats: * PDC and BDC are NT domain controllers * Samba hosts are running several versions of Samba, from the later 2.0.* releases,
