fixing a corrupt /dev/hdar .. debugfs assistance...
I used ddrescue to copy /dev/md1 to a disk of sufficient size, and
re-ran e2fsck, and still get the error message that there's no root
file system (I've tried most every superblock):
# fsck -y -b 7962624 /dev/sdf
fsck 1.36 (05-Feb-2005)
e2fsck 1.36 (05-Feb-2005)
Superblock has a bad ext3 journal (inode 8).
Clear? yes
*** ext3 journal has been deleted - filesystem is now ext2 only ***

help with rebuilding md0 (Raid5)
Sorry, this is going to be a rather long post...Here's the situation; I
have 4 IDE disks from an old snap server which fails to mount the raid
array. We believe there is a controller error on the SNAP so we've put
them in another box running CentOS 5 and can see the disks OK.
hda thru hdd looks like this
Disk /dev/hdd: 185.2 GB, 185283624960 bytes

Shares not accessible when using FQDN
Hi Rowland,
Thank you for your answer.
I think I have found a solution which could solve the issue until the next migration step. It tested it on another server which is not critital :
* Joining the server as a member and setup the shares as you suggest
* Use nss_ldap instead of nss_winbind (idmap) which will pick my unix ids
In this setup it seems I can access to the shares

Shares not accessible when using FQDN
Rowland,
Yes, I mean uidNumber and gidNumber.
I'm aware I need to work with AD but at this time I need my unix IDs (on NSS) to keep services working. Not only for files ownership, but also for some other services. Yeah, that's complex...
If I undestand well, the best way to do is to join the server using "net ads join" and use nss_winbind. This what I do but I only use the

The owner of my company just asked me for an Asterisk brochure. Has
anyone seen such a creature? I know of some really informative

My fault (not ext3's!) and kernel panic on 2.4.7 .
Hello all.
I was playing with tune2fs to see how large the .journal file should
be on a 17G partition with 512M ram (it's 32M, by the way).
I am using plain 2.4.7 with ext3-2.4-0.9.4-247,
compiled with gcc-2.96-85 on a RH7.1 distribution with the relevant
changes, i.e. e2fsprogs-1.22-1, mount-2.11g-4 and
util-linux-2.11f-3 taken from rawhide.
I don't have any ext3 statement in /etc/fstab,

WinXP don't boot
Hi all,
I've installed CentOS 4.4 in a box which previously had dual boot (XP
SP2 and Ubuntu)
I can run CentOS without problem but I can't boot XP SP2. When I try it
the system simply hangs...

core dumped messages from tune2fs
I decided to start using ext3. My kernel 2.4.15p9.
I downloaded and build util-linux-2.11m
and e2fsprogs 1.25.
I compiled ext3 in the kernel.
I started converting my filesystems and thing went ok for the first few.
I then started getting the following on each additional filesystem.
[root@joker /root]# tune2fs -j /dev/hdc4
tune2fs 1.25 (20-Sep-2001)

SSH not responding.
SSH doesn't seem to be responding to me.
The machine I am connecting to is running Linux,
and I could connect to it fine from windows
running the SSH client. But now I can no longer
connect. From Linux, this is the output:
pc078:~$ ssh -v 208.240.199.51
SSH Version OpenSSH_2.2.0p1, protocol versions 1.5/2.0.

uniqueness validation perplexity
I want to write a validate routine to check to enforce that a position
must be unique in a category. (In another category, it doesn''t have
to and shouldn''t need to be unique.) I write this code which works
happily for new items:
def position_in_category_not_unique
@items = Item.find( :all, :conditions => [ "category_id = ? AND
position = ?", category_id,

CentOS 5 Beta Dual Boot Problem
To test CentOS 5, I loaded from DVD adding it to
a system at home running Fedora Core 7 T2.
Partition Layout is:
/dev/hda1 - / for the RH7T2 system
/dev/hda2 - /home
/dev/hda3 - swap
/dev/hda4 - extended
/dev/hda5 - / for CentOS 5
The system loaded cleanly and gave me the
opportunity to tell grub about the other system.
CentOS boots fine. Grub Stage 2 will show me
both systems.

rsync remote raw block device with --inplace
It would be very nice to be able to rsync the raw data content of, e.g., a
non-mounted disk partition, particularly in combination with --inplace.
Our reality: several dual-boot machines running Windows during the day and
Linux at night, during backups. Windows is very tedious and iffy to
re-reinstall without a raw disk image to start from. Disks fail, and the
ensuing downtime must be

ext2fs_read_bb_inode: Invalid argument && Can't read an block bitmap
Hello,
sorry if the question was asked a couple of times before but I couldn't
find any useful hinds to this problem using google and the listman
search-engine of the archive of this list.
Somehow the ext3 filesystem on one of my machines died an after a reboot
grub wouldn't come up again.
What I did so far:
fsck -y /dev/hda4
fsck 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)
