unix password sync problems!
I have been trying for hours to get the unix password sync going properly with Samba 1.9.18p4 running on FreeBSD 2.2.5 I have compiled Samba with the ALLOW_CHANGE_PASSWORD option enabled. I created the smbpasswd file as ENCRYPTION.txt states, and can set passwords as root. However, when a user tries changing their password, it doesn't work. The error reported is:

Max files/buffer overflow
Hello All, I am having an interesting issue where using the command ?rsync ?avP ?e ssh? seems to want to bail out on filesystems that have more than about 1.2 million files. Using that same command on smaller filesystems works like a charm! The server is rsync 2.6.8 protocol 29 and the destination is rsync 2.6.3 protocol 28. The server is Fedora Core 4 and the client is Mac OS 10.5.2. What am

Inconsistent Authentication Results on Different Servers
We have several RedHat Enterprise Linux version 4 servers (running the distributed Samba). Windbind/nsswitch is set up to point to W2K server running in Mixed Mode. (smb.conf from the one *working* server follows, below). wbinfo/getent get proper results when run from the Linux command line (i.e., listing everyone in both local Linux /etc/passwd and everyone in the Domain, but we are having

Samba 3 with Unix passwd authentication?
We are a primarily Linux company with a NIS backend, but we keep a couple "bridge boxes" for Windows users (on a Windows PDC) to connect to their unix accounts and access data. Under Samba 2.2, this was fairly easy with "encrypt passwords = no" turned on. But I can't figure out how to make it work with Samba 3. Does Samba 3 not support a unix passwd backend, or am I

authentication problems after upgrade to samba 3.0.7-2.FC1
good evening all, i upgraded my last samba 2.2.7a (dog2) this afternoon and have run into problems. first, the setup: windows 2000 clients three sites on three seperate subnets connected by t1 through routers. each site has a samba server that authenticates the users on its subnet. the workgroup name for each server is dognet. /etc/passwd, /etc/group, and smbpasswd are synced up manually.

Proxying Authentication on both sides
I've recently set up a director proxy environment on my test servers, with the intention of deploying on our cluster soon. One thing I found confusing in the proxying documentation [1] was the first bit about their being two ways to do the authentication...either you have the proxy forward the auth to the real server for authentication, or you have the proxy authenticate it and then login

Samba authentication problem
Hi, I have asked around in other forums but no one seems to know why this doesn't work. I have a backup server with samba on it and am trying to set it up to only allow write access when a user authenticates but to allow reading from anyone (guest). At this time I have guest disabled and a minimal config set up as shown below to try to narrow down the problem. I have added the user

How to set UNIX password from PC?
System: Samba: 2.0.4b on Solaris 2.x, NIS password PCs: Windows NT Service Pack 3, with plain-text passwords. Background: There is the usual [homes] share on the UNIX samba server: users provide a UNIX (samba) identifier and password (plain), which authenticates against the NIS service on that same UNIX samba server. (So there is none of this complicated "smbpasswd" file

NIS Authentication Help!
Hello, I have a question that I was wondering if someone could help me with. I am an admin at RIT and we have a large network base of Sun machines. We do authentication via NIS over NFS. We are about to receive a full lab of Windows boxes and need to set up a samba server to serve users' home directories to the Windows boxes. This initial configuration is relatively easy, but we want

Dual Authentication methods?
Hi all, I have an interesting situation where I have 2 groups of users, a Unix group, and a Windows group. I want to be able to allow them all access to the same resources, but not comlicate my life too much more than it already is :) Here's the situation. I have a Samba server currently running in order to allow the Unix folks access to their home directories from their PCs. This group

Samba with NIS Authentication
I have a huge UNIX network. I want to deploy a Samba server using NIS Authentication mechanism for the growing number of windows machines. What are the pros and cons of using NIS authentication with Samba? Also any pointer/docs in setting up Samba with NIS Authentication. I am pretty much familiar in setting up Samba using the default smbpasswd authentication. Thanks in advance

Password sync problem from unix to windows
I have searched the list and have been unable to find a definitive answer to this problem. I am using Samba 3.0.2xx as a PDC. The server that runs this also happens to be a NIS master (not sure if this complicates matters or not). When a user's password is changed within a windows client that is part of this domain (i.e. using ctrl-alt-del), the password change correctly propagates to the

WORKGROUP authentication with netapp and multiple sambas (NIS?)
Hello samba folks, I am thinking about how to upgrade my current file servers. I have a Network Appliance NAT (CIFS and NFS) that did not recognize the 2.X samba PDC (due to 2.x only partially supporting unicode). Unwilling to put in a native windows PDC, I threw in the towel, and deployed Windows native networking (WORKGROUP). (2 logins required, but simple). This small company of 15 uses

problems with changing Unix UID's and Samba acting as a PDC
I am using samba 2.2.1a in the following environment: Solaris 8+RedHat 8+win2k/XP clients files are on a Network Appliance fileserver The samba server is used as a PDC for authentication with the NIS server. We don not have a windows server. Recently I was asked to change the Unix UID's of our employees. On the Unix side you modify NIS and run the chown command on all the users files. I than

NT/ADS and UNIX user convergence using Samba
Hi- I'm deploying a fileserver running Samba 3.0.2a in an environment that contains NT and UNIX users. I'd like to have my fileserver set up as follows: - Users connecting to the fileserver from NT boxes are authenticated against the Win2K ADS Domain Controller. - Users connecting to the fileserver from other UNIX boxes are authenticated locally using NIS and access the shared volume

NT user name resolution to UNIX user name doesn't work the same
My departmental file server is on RHL6.2(i386) (Samba 2.0.6) and participates in the company's NT domain. If an NT user wants to see shares on this UNIX(Linux) box I have only to create a UNIX account for them where the UNIX username matches the NT username. I have a Solaris 8 box (Samba 2.2.2), I cannot figure out how to make it act the same way. I have looked at winbindd but that does noot

what would it take ... ("Unix cmd line on NT")
Hello, I have here a Linux box with RedHat 5.1. I have complete control over it. I.e. I can do whatever I want to it in order to make it do what I need it to do. I was wondering what would it take to be able to do the following : The Linux box will become part of the NT domain NTdom1. It's is just a machine on the network, not a PDC or BDC. I would like to give all user accounts in
