Migrating from TNG to 2.2
Hi,
is there a HOWTO about migrating from Samba TNG to Samba 2.2?
I have problems with the user profiles on the Windows client machines,
they are recreated on login on the new Samba (2.2.5) machine. I copied
the SID (with smbpasswd), /etc/passwd and smbpasswd to the new machine,
and everything works fine, except for the user profiles.
Currently we are not using server-saved profile, but we will

PDC migration from samba-tng to samba 3
Hello,
I have inherited a samba-tng PDC (without ldap) that I am to upgrade to
samba 3. My first attempt failed miserably. I copied over the smbpasswd
and the domain SID, users were able to log in, but most were not able to
load their profiles.
I think I have to copy over machine IDs, but I'm not sure how to
proceed. The migration section of the the howto doesn't seem to apply to

Extracting the trust account password (for use with Win2k's ktpass)?
Hello, all:
My Samba server is a member of a Windows 2000 AD domain.
Authentication to the Samba server is, of course, by encrypted NTLM
hashes. Authentication to the host itself, which runs Red Hat Linux
7.1, is by NIS (the AD domain controller is running Server for NIS).
I want to remove NIS (or at least the passwords from NIS). To
accomplish this, I wish to use pam_krb5 to authenticate users

Migrating from TNG 2.6alpha
Would like to know if it is possible to switch to the
latest production release of samba (2.2.3a) from
samba-tng 2.6alpha and maintain the same
configuration, password, mapping files, security
identifiers, etc as tng. If not how would I convert
my setup from tng to main with minimal effort?
thank you

The simple answer is yes. Samba's pdb_ldap code supports binding to a replica LDAP server, and will also follow

Samba 3.0 won't join Samba-TNG domain
Hi,
I posted this problem before in more detail
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=samba&m=104756899022766&w=2) but received
no response.
At the current state of Smaba 3.0 and Samba-TNG these two seem to be
incomaptible. Samba 3.0 can't join a TNG controlled domain.
I think this should affect a lot of installations as TNG as a controller and
"stable" as file/printserver seem

Win2K Profiles and a Samba PDC.
We're a Solaris/Linux shop, trying to migrate the last vestiges of our
NT domain over to Samba. We've got a few users using Windows 20000
workstations, and for some odd reason can't get them to join the domain
with local profiles. The Winboxen always try to create roaming profiles
on the PDC (which we don't want), and there's no way to force a local
profile, other than

SMB: : ver 2.2x vs 3.0 vs tng (diff's)?
OK: First, please respond to me directly, as I'm not on the
TNG
list.
Here's the situation:
I will be setting up a "computer lab" for 30-40 PC's with
various users (students).
Here are my needs:
1) One Touch (point) User administration
(the simpler the better)
2) Simplest set of LINUX SW possible
3) NO NT PDC
4) All clients are W2K.
5) Want

Re: Samba PDC and Kerberos(MIT or SEAM in Uinx, without microsoft ADS)
Hi, Andrew,
Thank you very much for your answer.
Now our case is as below:
1, our client machine is the windows 2000
2, We want our Kerberos run in the Unix box.
3, We also want the samba as PDC for all windows user and machine.
4, We want integrate the Kerberos Authentication with samba authentication.
So in this situation, can we get the kerberos login from the windows

Format of LSA Secret for Interdomain Trust Password
Hello, all!
Let's say, hypothetically, that one was trying to migrate a NT4 domain to
Samba without the knowledge of the NT admin of a domain you trusted. :)
Basically, what I need is the password for my trust account, but it's in
some obfuscated hash under the G$$xxxxx secret. Does anybody know how this
is stored, or am I down to sniffing network traffic?
Thanks,

NFS and Samba
This is a question before i go into production with my setup. Thanks
everyone for the assistance i received while setting up Samba. I am going
to have an AS/400 mount an NFS directory on my linux server and it is going
to be constantly writing to this share. Also about 400 users are going to
be connected to this same share through samba, accessing via windows NT.
Has anyone heard of any issues

Hi, Andrew,
Thank you very much. I have read some information about the samba PDC kerberos
authentication as below.

Failed to modify password entry for user paulien$

Samba-LDAP:Ldap call each time you open a text file?
Hello,
When I open a text file on a Samba fileserver using LDAP for
authentication, Samba always makes these LDAP calls (see below). The user
has been authenticated so why does Samba still makes these LDAP connections?
Any ideas?
/var/log/ldap.log when opening a text file.

remote windows management
I keep hoping for better wasy to remotely manage windows machines
through samba.
In the very old samba-tng there was an rpcclient that could connect to
a remote machine and do various things like read/write the registry,
grab event logs, etc. I could never get it to work very well and
waited for a better one.
The trouble is the rpcclient program in samba-current doesn't have
these features.

PDC Machine Trust Accounts
I read in the Samba HOWTO Collection that every machine in the domain
needs to have a corresponding UNIX account. Does this mean whenever I
add a machine to the network, I must create a UNIX account for each
one?? Am I supposed to create Unix accounts for my users as well?
Doesn't this defeat the purpose of using a centralized authentication
backend such as LDAP or MySQL?

samba-3.0rc1 Can access PDC but not others
Hello,
I am trying to migrate an NT domain from an NT PDC to a samba3.0 PDC
without disrupting users or requiring them to change passwords, etc. The
complication is that there are NT fileservers in the domain already, so
it's important that the users be transferred to the samba machine with
SID's and RID's intact (so they can access these shares with the same
permissions).
