NIS problems
I've got a RHEL5 server acting as a NIS/NFS server, and connected one C5 machine just fine. I'm trying to connect another, and for the life of me, cannot figure out why NIS won't bind. NFS works fine. ypbind just hangs. I disabled SELinux and the firewall. I just cannot get it to bind. Ideas? Thanks. Scott

Odd issue with C6 and NIS
I seem to have this very odd issue with CentOS 6 WRT NIS. I have taken the package selection that I used with CentOS 5 and basically plopped it into my C6 kickstart file (see below). On C5 this works just fine and I'm able to log in with NIS credentials just fine. However, it looks like on C6 if you use a package selection like this, you also need to specify the yp-tools package as part of

winbind and NIS+NFS
Does winbind play well with NIS (or vice versa)? In my initial test, it doesn't seem that a machine that is running winbind will serve the user list over NIS to NIS clients. [ w2k3/ads ] --winbind--> [ Server 1 ] --NIS--> [ Server 2 ] I'd like to be able to authenticate connections (ssh/login) to Server 2 using the same logins as on Server 1 (samba) and the

Building a C5 chroot on a C6 machine
I'm trying to do something slightly silly; rather than having a C5 machine and a C6 machine around for compiling and testing, I want to create a C5 chroot area. Something similar to "mock" but using lvm snapshots and some local config specific stuff. (Potentially even using Linux Containers to enter the chroot environment). So I thought I'd build out the chroot... % cat

/boot partition or not on C5
hello, the last 3 times I installed C5, the MBR was unchanged and nothing was written into /boot/grub except splash.xbm.gz there were no stage* files, nor a menu.lst I know how to fix that. Would I have better luck using a partition mounted as /boot? Anyone succeded with Grub that way? I prefer not having to do surgery to get C5 to boot :) -- Mark New Packages for C5 ---------

Firewall builder - which rpm?
I need a decent, easy, firewall on Centos. This is for test systems, so I do not need a lot. For 'a lot', I use and Astaro firewall. I had used Firestarter once, but found out that it cannot handle routing between a public and private network. Basically saying this is impossible. Of course, if your private network is addressed per RFC 1918 (that I co-authored), I can understand

best source for rpmdevtools RPM in C5
hello, I'm going to try this question again. The first time I botched it and the answers I got were useless. I want to use rpmdevtools to help with some packaging chores. There is no C5 version that I can find. I've located an SRC RPM in a location that is known to be C5 compatible. There are 2 versions of rpmdevtools:

Setting up a two-interface shorewalled system supporting local NIS/YP and NFS
Hello all. You might understand by now that I''m experimenting with shorewall on my FC3 (kinda) system. It''s a two interfaced system, with the internet on eth0, net, and the local network on eth1, loc. the machine fw runs shorewall 2.0.10 right now. The thing is that I want to try to use NIS/YP on the local machines and have fw run the ypserv. Furthermore, I''d like

PHP updates
For the 2 threads going on about PHP 5.2/5.3... CentOS tracks upstream whose version is... php-5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 If you want something newer, you have to go off the beaten path. try this...(as root) wget http://dev.centos.org/centos/5/CentOS-Testing.repo mv CentOS-Testing.repo /etc/yum.repos.d yum --enablerepo=c5-testing check-update and this would allow to update to version 5.2.9-2.el5.centos

NIS binding probs w/Firewall and SELinux
I have RHEL5 Server originally configured and installed by me with Firewall enabled, but passing through NFS, Samba, and SSH. I then disabled SELinux. As you all likely recall, I had configured a test environment to get samba and nfs/nis up and running. I got it going, and recently brought it to a production server. After modifying the files on the production server and rebooting, I'm

about add/remove software
In the documentation, it says that add/remove software is use only to install from CD drive[1]. However this program refuse to run when no internet connection, why not just prompt for the installation media? assuming everybody has fast internet connection was too optimistic. 1. So what is the correct way to install/remove software after the installation (using GUI)? 2. In
