RE Linux and SMB using single passwd
Thanks for the reply.
This will not quite do what I want as I dont want local unix users, only smb
users.
Reason: if a smb user is added and only an smb user and the Linux system uses
pam _smb, I can deliver pop mail to the user without them having a local unix
user. I have this working very well with LDAP and NIS where I only add a NIS
or LDAP user but no unix users and I can still deleiver

Multiple-level user shares
Can anyone tell me how I can do a multiple level user share? What I'm
having trouble configuring is a share that allows all users to use the first
directory of the share, and then in subdirectories of the first directory
only allow specified users access. I can't find anything similar in any
docs on the internet nor in the O'Reilly Using Samba book.
Thanks.

Large Roaming profiles
Hi,
I have large size Roaming profiles in Win2k and Samba.
Samba 2.2.2 is acting as a PDC.
Does Win2k load all the files from scratch from the samba server
everytime a user log in?
Or does Win2k or Samba provides some sort of diff mecanism, so
that only modified files are loaded from the Samba server(to speed think
up)?
Thanks

smbpasswd file NFS sharable?
If I want to make two servers use the same encrypted passwords can I
share the smbpasswd file via NFS? Will updates/locking work correctly?
Is there an alternative? Can LDAP/PAM use encrypted passwords?

Unix Group Question with repect to Samba
I have a question with regards to using Unix groups with samba. This might
be easier to explain with an example.
Lets say I have two users
UserID: GID
UserA:Group1
UserB:Group2
etc.....
I now have an entry in /etc/group that looks like
groupdev::UserA, UserB
If I have a directory with group ownership set to "groupdev" and group mode
"rws"
UserA & UserB cannot create a

Limit bandwidth per client
Hi all,
I have an installation where each user on subnet 192.168.1.0/24 is
connected via a multiplexer.
The problem is that if any client uses more than about 48Kb/s, the
multiplexer crashes.
I need to limit each client to under this rate, say 32Kb/s. I have seen
examples on creating a class per host but is there a simple way of
saying "any host from 192.168.1.0/24" so I dont have

Unix to SMB Password Sync using PAM
Hello,
I would like to configure PAM to sync Unix passwords to Samba passwords.
When I add a new Unix user or change an existing Unix user's password,
I want the same password to be stored in /etc/smbpasswd.
I'm trying to follow these instructions:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/pam.html#id2606200
It sounds like this is what I want to do:

changing smb passwords from non smb machines
In the interest of not having password divergence between NT and unix
I've got everything authenticating against and ldap database.
samba password updates are not a problem - i just
use the unix password syncing features.
however the other direction is proving to be a problem.
I can rig pam to update both passwords with pam_ldap and pam_smbpass
on machines that run samba. On some machines I

auth via PAM or /etc/passwd
Hello,
A friend wants to set up Samba (3.0.9-2.6-SUSE) so that users would log on
using the same credentials as on the local Linux system, without a separate
password database. He would like Samba to use PAM or /etc/passwd.
Is it possible, and if so, how?

RedHat 7.2 install SMB authentication option
I am installing RH 7.2 on a machine to act as a Samba File and print
server. During the install, there was an option for an SMB
authentication server. I entered in the information for my Win2k ADC
(running in mixed mode), but do not know what else is needed to finish
this authentication process. RH support is less than helpful in this
aspect. Thanks in advance for your helpful suggestions, and

My goal is to configure a Linux desktop into a windows domain environment.
So far I have managed to configure pam_smb to authenticate users to the PDC.
So thats good.
Now the problem is when user tries to browse a share.
At the moment the users has to retype in their domain/userid password

pam module for ldap/ADS for Solaris 2.8 to communicate with Windows 2000 ADS
Hello,
In the third party software that we bought, which runs on Solaris 2.8 Server,
we use the pam_smb version 1.9.8 to authenticate our users against the NT
Domain. Now, our company is migrating from NT Domain to Windows 2000 ADS
Domain in native mode. I saw the documention on SAMBA 3.0 (alpha 1-15), and
it states that SAMBA 3.0 is compatible with ldap/ADS of Windows 2000. Have

the cheapest option? Should I get some kind of large scale FXS box or
