rsync anti-FUD
I'm working on a commercial project that would benefit immensely from
the use of rsync. However, I cannot convince management that rsync is a
worthy tool due to the rote "it's shareware, it's not supported" FUD.
Are there any documented, corportate users of rsync? Testimonials? In
short, how do I drag this risk-averse group out of the FTP age into the
rsync present?

Locking foolishness
I'm working on getting Dovecot set up on my school's mailserver, as an IMAP
and POP server. Everything is going well, move over to maildir went well,
and all that...
The catch:
When I coverted from mbox to maildir (as part of this whole process), I put
the Maildir folders under user home dirs -- and the home dirs are mounted
via NFS from a server. This is for reasons of space as well as

Locking foolishness - Better info
I realized that my last message about locking gave bad information -- or
rather, very little information.
Here's my setup:
- Home directories and user login information are located on an Xserve
running Mac OS X 10.2.6. Home directories are split between 2 different
directories -- /Users and /Students. Home dirs are exported via NFS to the
mail server. User login info is shared via LDAP

msdfs problems
I have setup samba with msdfs, and configured it. The problem is that it
works with some windows 2000 workstations, but not with others, even if
they are at the same service pak levels.
I.e, I have workstation a and workstation b, both running 2000. On
workstation a, I can map the dfs share to a drive, and be able to access
everything in that share (which is different shares on different

CentOS Wiki - Fight FUD?
In the up and coming wiki, don't forget to have an
FAQ/Fight against FUD section. Looking at the web in
January an upstream vendor employee said some things
in his wiki. In Feb/March CentOS was discussed on the
Fedora-list/Slashdot.
- Common myths about the legality/ethicality of CentOS
- CentOS providing value to Open Source as a whole
- Projects emanating from CentOS like SMEServer

R unable to access internet to install packages
Hi,
I am having some trouble trying to install a number of packages in R on my work computer. An example of the code I am using is as follows:
install.packages("ggplot2",dependencies=TRUE)
An example of the error messages I am getting is:
Warning: unable to access index for repository http://cran.stat.auckland.ac.nz/bin/windows/contrib/2.9

Personally I figure Smart Co's are going to say bite me and move to Linux.
Using http://www.ximian.org software my users can do whatever their WinDoze
counterparts can with Word Excel printing and it just keeps getting simpler
to install and use Linux for the end

Samba Feature Usage: Does anybody use these options? Can we kill them?
As part of the effort towards Samba 3.0, a number of features have
disappeared. This message is intended to gauge the reaction that would
occur if Samba 3.0 was released with these features still absent.
Users who need these features should indicate exactly how vital they
feel they are, and (if possible) the effort they would be able to put
into reimplementing/supporting/testing it if it was

Problmes joining Samba server to Active Directory
Hi.
I've now been told the name of our Kerberos server for the Active
Directory that I'm trying to join my Samba 3.0 alpha 21 to.
As described on
http://techupdate.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t481-s2122363-p2,00.html, I
configured /etc/krb5.conf like this:
[root@ugkbase samba]# cat /etc/krb5.conf
[logging]
default = FILE:/var/log/krb5libs.log
kdc = FILE:/var/log/krb5kdc.log

R not responding (must force quit) when saving graphic to PDF (bug?)
Dear colleagues,
I wish to report a problem I encounter when trying to save a graphic to
file. When I produce a graphic and try to save it R becomes unresponsive
and I must force quit, and then restart R. The problem occurs when I try to
overwrite an existing graphic: for example when I made changes to the
graphic and want to save the graphic using the original file name. It only
happens when I

Is this just anti-Ogg FUD?
I was recently talking to a friend of mine who produces what's widely
referred to as "techno", music that's heavy on electronically generated
loops and effects, samples, and has plenty of bass.
He doesn't like ogg for a few reasons - he sent me a rather long email, and
I've stripped out the nonsense from it (he has some technically irrelevant
reasons for not liking

What happened to --desktop geom?
Hey,
I'd like to apologize in advance if this is an old issue that everyone
already dealt with in some new mechanism...
But I compiled today's CVS for the first time in a few months, and when i
tried to fire up programs/games with --desktop geom 640x480 (or any other
dimensions) I get an "unknown option --desktop" error and the "usage" list
pops up. I read the man

R not responding (must force quit) when saving graphic to PDF (bug?)
Dear Wolfgang,
Thanks for your response.
No, I haven't tried doing the complete reinstallation as you suggest. If I
recall correctly, this has happened on previous occasions but like I said
in my email it's not all that disruptive to my workflow. It's more like a
'first world problem'.
I was encouraged to submit the query because I had correspondence with

Win2k Domain logons
Hi everyone. I just got a copy of Win2k in and have been messing with it.
Have a question, and have searched the archives for the answer, but didn't
find it. Can Win2k domain logon to a pre-3.0.0 samba server? Or di I
need to get TNG running? I can get NT4.0 boxes to authenticate and login
fine (Samba pre-3.0.0), but Win2k keeps complaining:
