matchname messages filling logs - howto stop?
Listmates,
I have had a few boxes where the 'matchname' message is filling my syslog with
one new message ever ~40 seconds or so. No performance problems, just the log
annoyance. An example of the messages are:

Timeserver sending wrong time to Windows Clients
Help Andrew! and whoever else..
I have a Linux Mandrake 7.2 box with Samba 2.07 acting as a timeserver
for our local lan. We are in the CST timezone. All windows boxes sync
thier time from the Linux box via: net time \\Nemesis /set /yes. I would
like to have xntp keep the clock on the server updated.
Problem:
ntpdate and xntp work great at setting the Linux box hardware clock to
GMT.

VPN server and logon to Samba PDC
My goal is to make VPN access to our Samba PDC (FreeBSD 7.0) so that users
can access there home shares from Windows clients.
I have read the instructions at
http://samba.org/ftp/unpacked/lorikeet/pppd/final-report.pdf, but I can't
make it work. Don't know if is due to my lack of skills or has something to
do with the Popop functionality in FreeBSD.
Following the instructions, i made a

How to connect across the Internet
Hello All,
Well my Samba server is up and running good, but I am now needing to
be able to let some of my users connect to our server who is not
located on our local network.
Actually they are located some distance away and I would like to be
able to allow then to connect.
Has anyone had any success with this and how it might be done?
Best Regards,
Lonnie

can't open files off of samba shared drive on w2k/xp workstations
Hi,
I have somewhat successfully got Samba working where as users can map
the drives to their win2k/xp workstations and wrote to the folders
they are given permissions to. They can write to the folder, delete
folders, write files, delete files, view the file listing, however,
they can't open files. For instance, if there is a word document,
they can't just double click on the share and

Compile from source FAILED - Mandrake 7.2
Mates,
The saga continues, but THANK GOD 'make revert' WORKS. Here is my
problem. I am trying to compile 3.0.7 from source and install it on my
Mandrake 7.2 box. The gcc compiler is 2.95.3. Here is what I have done:
[stop samba]
# ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-smbmount
# make
# make install
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start
Here is what I get:

kernel & automount errors in messages log
Hello all,
I have a few strange errors in my messages log I can't fix. My system
works great, it just bugs me that I have error (or apparent errors) that
I don't know about. I get automount errors regurlarly (daily) that are
reflected in the last four lines of the log file excerpt below. My misc
and net directories are there, but I can't write to them either. The
properties say that

SuSE 9.3 samba binaries FUBAR??
Mates,
I dunno if nobody else is using the samba binaries to put 3.0.20-1 on
SuSE 9.3 -- or -- if I'm just doing something stupid, but there seem to be
library problems. Specifically, we are getting library errors for the *.so.2
libraries, regardless of whether we try via YAST or RPM.

RE: [SLE] SuSE 9.3 and Latest Binaries - Library Conflict
Cross-posting scares me, but...
Have you looked at the latest RPMs for SuSE, from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/samba/ ?
They've worked like a charm for me, thus far (revision after revision, a simple rpm -U * seems to work...)

APC Backups-Pro 650 - Any way to use apcsmart?
Listmates,
After wrangling with the voltage value on the CyberPower 1000AVRLCD and now
having 2 of them working, I though it would be a simple matter to move my APC
BP650 from apcupsd to nut so that all 3 servers would be monitored on the same
web interface. The APC is attached to an older box running openSuSE 11.0 with
nut-2.2.2-66.1. (nut-classic).
The APC BP650 uses a serial connection

Mates,
Still can't get the latest samba binaries to inatall on SuSE 9.3. I've
downloaded them from the samba site and from
ftp://ftp.primastasys.com/pub/Samba-Packages/ still no joy. The problem is
library related:

3.0.7 - NT Create AndX Response, Error:, QUERY_PATH_INFO, Error:
<earlier, David Rankin wrote to no avail:>
Mates,
I have been watching a developing problem over the past few weeks. Most
likely a M$ patch to XP that has caused problems. What happens is that XP
clients try to open the standard "File" -> "Open" dialog (like in word, or
whatever) and the file open dialog hangs and stops responding for 15 seconds
or so. I have

Testing to see if drive mounted with smbmount
Mates,
I have set up a backup scheme that uses rsync to backup shares from my
mdk 7.2 box to an old ibm box that is running win95. Basically I use
"smbmount //backup/d /mnt/backup -o password=" to mount the ibm's d:/ as
/mnt/backup. How can I test to see if the drive is still mounted without
using another smbmount call prior to starting the rsync backup. smbmount
works for this,
